By: Danny Serratelli, ringside – DiBella Entertainment’s Broadway Boxing returned to BB Kings Blues Club & Grill and there was great action throughout the night. Lou DiBella put on a card that on paper didn’t really jump out at you, but turned out to be a great night of Wednesday night boxing in Times Square. Once again matchmaker Joe Quiambao must be commended for putting together great all action fights with rising prospects paired with game opponents who all showed up to fight and win..
Newark, New Jersey’s, Alex “The Brick City Bullet” Perez, 13-0, 7 KO’s made his presence felt on his first appearance on Broadway Boxing in an 8- round welterweight bout that was the most exciting fight of the night. His opponent Doel Carasquillo, 14-17, 12KO’s also had a lot to do with making it an interesting and tough fight. Carasquillo stalked his opponent and stood up to 8 rounds of punishment from the heavy handed Perez. As he walked out of the ring, I asked Carasquillo if he would go down if I hit him in the head with a baseball bat he simply answered, “I come to fight!”
Perez, who recently signed with DiBella Entertainment is known as a very big, strong, aggressive welterweight, but he showed that he also has all around boxing skill and speed as he used his legs and a long quick stiff jab to beat Carasquillo up in each round. Carasquillo however kept coming forward and tried to taunt Perez at times to take Perez off of his game plan, however, Perez boxed beautifully, while still going toe to toe and hurting Carasquillo on several occasions. Perez would have swept on all three judges scorecards, but a flash knockdown was ruled in round number 6 so he would lose only one 2 point round. Perez is a tough all action fighter who is sure to please more crowds and television fans in the near future.
In the 8- round co-feature, Junior Lightweight, Dominican Javier Fortuna, 13-0, 10 KO’s defeated the previously undefeated New Jersey prospect Victor Venenzuela, 8-1, 1 KO. The fight was short and the knockout was devastating. Both fighters came out brawling and the fighter who came in outweighed by5.5 pounds (128-123.5) was stopped early.
In a featured 8 round junior welterweight bout, hometown favorite, Brooklyn’s, Gabriel “Tito” Bracero, 13-0, 1 KO won a unanimous decision over a game but out matched Hector Alatore, 16-12, 5 KO’s who fought out of Tulane California. Brancaro was the sharper puncher, but seemed unable to really hurt the game Alatore.
In a 4- round junior middleweight bout Delen Parsley, 4-0, 2 KO’s had a tough match against the game Edberto “Tito” Medina, 5-5, 1 KO. This bout looked like it would be a draw with each fighter winning 2 rounds when Medina appeared to have the 4th round until late when Parsley hurt Medina and despite the fact that he wasn’t dropped, the damage seemed to be enough to steal the 4th round. All 3 judges scored the bout 39-37 for Parsley.
