Berkshire Headlines Morgantown Fight Night

By Thomas Scherr – Saturday night at the Morgantown Event Center in the Water Hotel in Morgantown WV, Matt Berkshire (12-2-2, 5 KO’s) will fight Vance Garvin in the main event. This is a rematch of a fight that occurred on May 7th. Their first fight was a classic that saw both men knocked down twice en route to a controversial 8 round draw. Garvey, a grizzled veteran of 45 fights came out quickly and seemed to surprised the less experience Berkshire. Garvey’s work rate and constant pressure was rewarded in the second round, as he floored Berkshire.. The knock down seemed to wake up Matt, who went on to dominate rounds 3-6 while dropping Garvin twice with a combination of strong body punching and short crisp hooks upstairs. Garvin battled back in the seventh and looked to take a close, hotly contested round. In the eighth, Gavin was able to push Berkshire to the ropes and unloaded a flurry of punches that forced Matt to crouch down. The referee believed Berkshire’s glove touched the canvas, and ruled that a knockdown occurred. The knockdown gave Garvey a 10-8 final round and allowed him to earn a draw.

In the cofeature, Jason Bergman (12-9-2, 9 KO’s) will face Mike Miller for the third time. The first two fights both ended in draws, so both men look to finally gain the upper hand in their battle. Bergman enters the bout on a three fight win streak, and the former “tough man” fighter has shown serious improvement over his recent fights. He has learned to set up his concussive power with improved footwork and better combination punching. Miller enters the fight off of 6 round decision loss to former amateur standout Travis Kaufman.

Also featured is the pro debut of light heavyweight Eric Watkins. Watkins has been a featured amateur at previous cards at the Waterfront hotel. While Watkins had a limited amateur career, he possesses a solid work ethic and powerful right hook.

The fights begin at 8:00 pm this Saturday in the Morgantown Event Center at the Waterfront Hotel. Please contact 304-290-0291 for ticket information.
