by Waldon “TBD” White – Attending the Andre Ward vs. Allen Green weigh in I got a chance to spend one round with “Fast” Eddie Chambers 35-2(18KO) and find out what he’s been up to since his loss on the 20th of March to IBF, WBO, IBO World Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko 53-3(48KO). Eddie Chambers is in Oakland to support his brother Welterweight Steve Chambers in his June 19th undercard bout with Hector Alatorre. The 28 year old Philadelphia resident Heavyweight has fought likes of the aforementioned champion, Alexander Povetkin, and defeated once Heavyweight kingpin Samuel “The Nigerian Nightmare” Peter. He still has time on his side in an aging and splintered division with two dominate European siblings (Klitschko Brothers) holding shares of the title along with a new English champion (Haye) to have another shot at bringing the Heavyweight crown back to American shores. The current champions are all engaged with preparing for new defenses and most have overlooked Chambers do to his style, which is more of a traditional boxing style rather than that of a crowd pleasing knockout artist. Despite the naysayers and latest setback in the ring he has made no secret that he thinks the belts belong back on American soil and wants another shot to prove it..
TBD: “Looking Back on the fight with Wladimir Klitschko what things if any do you think you could have done to change that nights outcome?”
FEC: “Well looking back I should have continued to press him really hard and be much more aggressive.” “I would do everything differently, he is a great champ and I made a mistake by not putting an extreme amount of pressure on him.”
TBD: “It looked to me as if the size difference gave you some serious problems along with Wladimir’s jab and overall power which seemed to interrupt your natural rhythm, and it seemed as if you didn’t utilize the beginning of the fight to establish your jab or make him respect your boxing prowess or your power.”
FEC: “That definitely was a factor, when you have a fighter of Vladimir’s size and skill you have to press the action and score first every time. Pressure can enable you to get around his jab and allow more opportunities. At a certain point in the fight you know I did realize that Size Does Matter. With the current field of (Super) Heavyweight’s out there you have to really be prepared physically and mentally.”
TBD: “How do you feel about the state of the current Heavyweight division?”
FEC: “I feel that you have a division that has become somewhat stagnant and predictable. I know how it feels to have a sibling in the business and would never fight him so I can understand that the fight everyone wants to see with the Klitschko brothers will never become a reality. To me that just means that one has to go, and someone has to step up to unify the division again. Right now we are seriously lacking a big time Heavyweight champ that the people can get behind and support.”
TBD: “What have you been doing in your downtime while you wait for another opportunity to get in the ring?”
FEC: “I’ve been staying on my workout schedule and have gone back to lifting weights and improving my strength and stamina. I want to be one of the best fighters in the division and I’m working hard and striving to come back and prove myself.”
