By Ted Sares – This crossroads battle was held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles and it appeared that Sam’s hunger for a win was left at the lunch table, while “Fast Eddie” Chambers was hungrier in the ring. Chambers, 33 -1 and ranked fifth by the IBF and number ten by ESB was just busy enough to win a slow-paced ten rounder against Peter who was ranked number five by the IBF, but who showed little resemblance to the Sam Peter who fought James Toney (in their second match).
If this bout promised to be the slick boxer versus the big puncher, it did not materialize that way. The first three rounds involved an exchange of jabs and little more. Chambers was able to use decent movement and jabs from both hands to hold off the lumbering and out of shape Peter who never connected with his celebrated overhand right. It appeared to this observer that Chambers dictated the action throughout, but could have been busier.. Also, Fast Eddie had a number of opportunities to follow up his straight right with left hooks, but for some reason, held back on using the hook. As for Peter, coming in at 265 pounds proved fatal as he started to gas after the fifth round.
Chambers went on to win a majority decision by the curious scores of 99-91, 96-94 and 95-95, curious because 99-91 seemed a bit much. I had it 96-94 for Chambers. Once again, I had the mute button on throughout the bout so as not to be influenced by the announcers and commentators.
This loss likely thwarts any date with destiny Peter might have been seeking. Indeed, he may well become far less of a relevant force in the division. Conversely, Chambers should solidify his status as a relevant and leading heavyweight contender– if not a top candidate for a title shot.
