WBA heavyweight “Champion in Recess” Ruslan “White Tyson” Chagaev has all of his boxing ducks, so to speak, lined up in a row but first he has to get past unbeaten No. 10 rated Carl Davis Drumond in the 12-round main event February 7, headlining “The Champion Returns” in Rostock, Germany. “The Champion Returns” card, presented by Universum Boxing-Promotion, will broadcast three 12-round bouts. Integrated Sports is distributing it in the United States for live viewing at 2 PM/ET – 11 AM/PT on cable pay-per-view via iN Demand and TVN for a suggested retail price of only $24.95..
A same day replay will be shown at 9 PM/ET – 6 PM/ET. The event will also be available in Canada on TSN. Hall of Fame announcer Col. Bob Sheridan will handle blow-by-blow duties and Benny Ricardo, former NFL placekicker, will serve as color commentator.
2000 Uzbekistan Olympian Chagaev (24-0-1, 17 KOs), The Ring’s No. 3 rated heavyweight, captured the WBA crown on April 14, 2007 by 12-round decision against Nikolai Valuev (46-0). However, an Achilles tendon injury prevented Chagaev from defending his title last year against Valuev and the WBA regulated Ruslan to its “Champion in Recess.”
WBA No. 10 rated Drumond (26-0, 20 KOs), promoted by Warriors Seminole Boxing, is a boxing mystery outside of fan in his native Costa Rica. His most notable win to date was in 2007, when he won a 10-round decision against former world champion Kelvin Davis.
“It is one year since my last fight (win by 12-round decision against 21-1 Matt Skelton), so I am very motivated for this fight,” Chagaev said from his training camp in Hamburg. “From now on I want to have fight after fight; I can’t wait for the next tasks. First, I will beat Drumond. He is a strong man and I must be careful. But he wants to knock me out? That’s a joke, isn’t it? Nobody can knock me out. Sorry, Carl. This fight will be a big surprise for you.
“Than (after defeating Drumond) I will show who the real champ is by beating Valuev for the second time. Then I want to unify all of the belts. I want to fight the Klitschkos. I respect them for what they’ve reached in the heavyweight division, but I know then very well and I can beat them. 2009 will be my year.”
WBA light welterweight champion Andreas Kotelnikin defends his title belt versus unbeaten Argentinean knockout artist Marcos Rene “El Chino” Maidana, the WBA No. 1 contender, in the 12-round co-feature. Styles make fights and Kotelnik-Maidana shapes-up as a potential classic featuring a pure boxer, Kotelnik (30-2-1, 13 KOs), against a dangerous power puncher, Maidana (25-0, 24 KOs).
Undefeated Russian heavyweight Denis Boytsov (23-0, 18 KOs), fighting out of Germany, meets Puerto Rican veteran Israel “King Kong” Garcia (19-2, 11 KOs) in a 12-round bout for the WBA Intercontinental title. The 22-year-old Boytsov, rated No. 11 by the WBA, is the latest prospect in a long line of Russian heavyweight contenders.

January 26 (Merrillville, In) – The buzz inside the Radisson Hotel @ Star Plaza in Merrillville, In. was nothing short of electric for “SLUGFEST 2009”. Octavius James’ One In A Million, Inc. stable of fighters put on a show for NW Indiana and Chicagoland fight fans leaving no one disappointed and helping the Gary P.A.L. in the process.
“This was just a sensational start to the New Year,” said C.E.O. of O.I.A.M. Octavius James. “Everyone on the card supplied our wonderful crowd with plenty of excitement and we were also able to help out coach Taylor and the Gary P.A.L. at the same time.”
Jimmy “The Fighting School Teacher” Holmes (18-1-2, 9 KOs) (pictured on the right) turned in an exceptional performance in his first fight in nearly a year against Tyrone Dowdy, despite Dowdy’s constant holding that cost him to have one point deducted in the 3rd round and another in the 4th, Holmes would win in the Main Event with a 6-round unanimous decision with all three scorecards reading 60-52.
The NABC Lightweight champion “Merciless” Mary McGee (16-0, 10 KOs) (pictured on the right) entered the ring poised and focused wearing a t-shirt dedicated to the memory of Giselle Salandy. McGee had dedicated her “Slug Fest 2009” performance to the fallen World Champion Giselle Salandy who had recently passed away in a tragic accident at only 21 years of age.
With that commitment at hand McGee put on a fight that would have made Salandy proud, as McGee pounded Jessica Mohs for two rounds in the Co-Main Event, bringing the exuberant crowd to their feet time and time again before Mohs didn’t answer the bell to start the 3rd round (0:01).
Ed “2 Fast 2 Furious” Ochoa (7-0, 7 KOs) (pictured on the right) left tire tracks all over his opponent Jess Salway, as the Hobart resident won by 2nd round TKO (1:33). After entering the ring with the chants of “Eddie, Eddie, Eddie” raining down from the crowd, Ochoa delivered some punishment in the 1st round as Salway was knocked down twice in the round and one more time in the second before finally being finished off by the unbeaten Ochoa.
Josh Crouch (3-0, 3 KOs) (pictured on the right) delivered some pain and pounced all over Jason Wilson, as the Schererville resident looked remarkable in his 1st round TKO (1:46) over Wilson.
In a card stealing type performance, “The Pitbull” Jimmy Perez Jr. (4-1, 1 KO) (pictured on the right) brawled it out with Nick Whiting, as the Hammond fighter left Whiting with a busted nose. Perez would earn a four-round decision with all the scorecards reading 39-36.
Orphius Waite (4-0, 3 KOs) (pictured on the right) made quick work of his previously unbeaten opponent Chance Western (1-1), as the Chicago product won by 1st round TKO (1:01) leaving Western in a world of hurt and wobbling in the corner before the referee called the fight.
Michigan City’s young and rising star Marcus Thompkins (3-0) (pictured on the right) stayed unbeaten as he pounded his opponent Danny Schlienz (7-15, 4 KOs) for a four-round decision as all the scorecards read 40-36 in favor of Thompkins.
Angel Hernandez (11-2, 9 KOs) (pictured on the right) after a nearly a three-year layoff, didn’t show any ring rust as he defeated Alan Moore by 1st round TKO (2:21).

GALARZA AND O’CONNOR JOIN URANGO ON CANADIAN MEGA-CARD FRIDAY NIGHT
HOLLYWOOD, FL, January 27 – When 140-pound star Juan Urango travels to Montreal, Canada’s Bell Centre to face Herman Ngoudjo for the vacant IBF world junior welterweight championship on Friday night, he won’t be alone, as two of his Seminole Warriors Boxing stablemates will be joining him in an attempt to make it a 3-0 night for the Florida-based promotional company.
In an eight round junior welterweight contest, unbeaten Puerto Rican prospect Kenny Galarza will make his Canadian debut against Leonardo Rojas, and 2008 United States Olympic team alternate Danny O’Connor will also look to keep his unblemished record intact in a four rounder against an opponent to be determined.
Both bouts support Friday’s main event, the 12 round championship battle between former champion Urango (20-1-1, 16 KOs) and rugged number one contender Ngoudjo (17-2, 9 KOs).
The pride of Ponce, Puerto Rico, Kenny Galarza (8-0, 8 KOs) is rapidly on his way to joining the likes of Miguel Cotto, Juan Manuel Lopez, and Ivan Calderon at the top of the boxing world.
