News: Angulo Promises Mayorga A Dog Fight; Joey Gilbert Looks To Help Chicago Cubs

TOTOWA, NJ (November 25, 2008) – Undefeated junior middleweight sensation ALFREDO “Perro” ANGULO of Mexico, has picked up the scent of his next victim – former world champion Ricardo Mayorga. The Angulo-Mayorga junior middleweight rumble will take place on February 14, 2009 – Valentine’s Day – and will be televised live on HBO. “I’m going to leave forget-me-knots all over his nicotine-stained face,” growled Angulo, whose nickname “Perro” translates to “dog” in English. “Mayorga isn’t going to have to wait until the last second to get knocked out like he did with Shane Mosley. I’m going after him like a dog on a bone the second the first bell rings. He is so done..”

Added Gary Shaw, Angulo’s promoter, “I don’t know what possessed Mayorga to accept this fight. Maybe they should be checking the contents on of his cigarettes!”

Angulo (14-0, 11 KOs), of Mexico is riding a 10-bout victory-by-knockout streak dating back to 2006. The former Mexican Olympian is currently world-rated No. 3 by the WBC, No. 5 by the WBO and No. 8 by the IBF. Mayorga (28-7-1, 22 KOs), from Nicaragua, has a resume that boasts victories over Vernon Forrest, Fernando Vargas and Andrew Lewis and world titles in the welterweight and super welterweight divisions.

Shaw also announced that Ali Funeka (30-1-2, 25 KOs), of South Africa, the IBF’s No. 1-rated lightweight contender and mandatory challenger, would be making his U.S. debut, when he takes on world lightweight champion Nate Campbell (32-5-1, 25 KOs), from Tampa, in the co-main event.

JOEY GILBERT OFFERS TO HELP CHICAGO CUBS END CENTURY LONG DROUGHT, THANKSGIVING WEEK TRYOUT LOOKS PROMISING

CHICAGO, IL (November 25, 2008) While visiting his original hometown of Chicago yesterday in anticipation of the Thanksgiving holiday celebration with family, super middleweight contender Joey Gilbert stopped at Wrigley Field to offer his assistance with the century long World Series drought for his beloved Chicago Cubs.

“I was born in Chicago and lived here until I was twelve spending many afternoons in the bleachers. The last two years the Cubs have had trouble with West Coast teams in the playoffs, Arizona in 2007 and the Dodgers this year. Now that I’m based in Reno and Big Bear, it’s my obligation to help them out” said Gilbert, the former high school athlete at Bishop Manogue Catholic High School in Reno .

Continued Gilbert, ‘It was always my dream to play for the Cubs, but boxing really took a priority. Hopefully, the Cubs will let me throw some punches for them after the Brinkley fight. They open up camp in late February so the timing would be perfect.”

Gilbert is scheduled to face Reno cross-town rival Jesse Brinkley in early 2009, details of which will be announced shortly.

After his time in the batting cages at Wrigley, Gilbert posed for pictures with his longtime girlfriend Molly Mentaberry and Cousin Joey. “I hit the ball pretty good against the machine, let’s see how I do against Carlos Zambrano at spring training. Hey, they let me keep the jersey and bat, all I need are the pants and shoes and we’re ready to go.”

Before leaving town, Gilbert is also scheduled to address the Oak Park River Forest High School wrestling team as they prepare for their season opening meet with rival St. Patrick on Wednesday, November 26th.

Said Chet Koerner, President of TKO BOXING Promotions, “Joey can hit in the ring and looks pretty solid with the bat. The Cubs needed some offensive help against the Dodgers and he might be perfect for them.”

Formed in early 2008, the Las Vegas based TKO Boxing Promotions stable includes; super middleweight Joey Gilbert, middleweights Bastie “THE BEAST” Samir and James Countryman, junior middleweight Anthony Thompson, junior welterweight Stevie Weimer and Terrance Crawford, lightweights Rolando Reyes and Raul Tovar, the sister team of Katy and Emily Klinefelter, featherweight Carney Bowman, super bantamweight Rafael Valenzuela and junior flyweight Austreberto Juarez.
