by James Slater – It looks as though David Haye may only need one more win as a heavyweight in order for him to secure a world title fight. Speaking with The Telegraph Sport recently, Haye spoke of how his manager and trainer, Adam Booth, has been in contact with the management team of both Wladimir Klitschko, the IBF and WBO world heavyweight champion and Vitali Klitschko, the WBC ruler. With just one heavyweight win under his belt thus far – a 1st-round stoppage over Tomasz Bonin – Haye has been told that if he can beat Monte Barrett in “spectacular” style this coming November 15th he will be looked at seriously as a challenger for both Klitschko brothers.
“Adam has been in talks with both of them, and their management team, and I have been told that if I look spectacular against Monte Barrett there is a very realistic possibility that I could be meeting one of the Klitschko brothers in a ring next summer,” the former cruiserweight king said. “Just knowing that is a massive incentive for me, because I need to go in there against Barrett and really look like I’m the future of the heavyweight division.”
Haye would be happier facing Wladimir, but would just as confidently take on his older brother, Vitali. The 28-year-old gave a clue as to how he would fight “Dr Iron Fist.”
“I wouldn’t stand in front of Vitali the way [Samuel] Peter did,” Haye revealed. “I’d show him all kinds of crazy angles, because what struck me was that Klitschko’s foot work was very slow. Yes, his punches are hard and crisp, but his legs are slow, and he was flat footed. Perhaps that is the effect of the surgery, and the injuries. Peter just demonstrated what I’ve been saying about the heavyweight division. They need a fast, dynamic heavyweight to come on the scene and shake it up.”
“The Hayemaker” clearly feels it will be he who does just that. Indeed, Haye’s confidence in beating Wladimir Klitschko is so high, it has been reported that he was willing to have taken the newly available December 13th date Vs. “Dr Steel Hammer.”
With Alexander Povetkin out due to injury, Wladimir needs a replacement foe for December. According to Booth, as quoted in The Mirror, Haye would have taken the fight, even though it would have meant fighting again less than a month after his bout against “Two Gunz.”
Booth explained why the fight won’t be happening for David this year.
“I spoke to the Klitschkos about December 13 but they wanted more time,” Haye’s manager said. “We would have been up for it but David is not yet ranked high enough by the IBF.”
It seems Haye’s chance will come next summer, however. Providing, of course, he beats the dangerous Monte Barrett on November 15th.
