After settling for a hard fought draw against Z Gorres in his first bout at Jr. Bantamweight Darchinyan looked to establish himself as a serious contender at 115 lbs with an impressive performance. Dimitri Kirilov had either lost or drawn in three fights in which he stepped up in competition and challenged for a world title. Conversely the scrappy Russian had never been stopped in 33 professional fights and had recently fought Cecilio Santos to a Draw in attempting to win the IBF Super Flyweight title.
Darchinyan controlled the action throughout looking focused and poised. With the apparent speed and power advantage it appeared only a matter of time before Darchinyan closed the show. Kirilov was never able to establish any effective offense mostly due to Darchinyan smothering him with steady combinations and stinging jabs.
When the 5th round approached Vic’s confidence was swelling and he proceeded to tee off on Kirilov sending him to the canvas and bloodying his nose. The game Kirilov beat the count but looked like a beaten man. Darchinyan, like a great white during shark week, smelled the blood in the water and went in for the kill. Kirilov absorbed a bit more punishment before a left hook sent him crashing to the mat. Kirilov was counted out and Darchinyan celebrated his second win since losing his Flyweight belts in an upset kayo loss to Nonito Donaire.
Darchinyan improves to 30-1-1 (24) and is 2-1-1 (2) in his last four fights. You have to enjoy watching a guy like Vic Darchinyan. He always makes for a fan friendly bout and his combination of speed, power and bad attitude means “love em or hate em” you want to watch him fight. Kirilolv drops to 29-4-1 (9) and 1-2-1 (0) in his last four fights.
