Ricky Hatton Speaks On Upcoming Lazcano Fight – “It’s Going To Be A Special Night!”

13.05.08 – by James Slater: Not long now until Ricky Hatton’s eagerly awaited return to the ring. Coming back after his brave but ultimately failing effort against pound-for-pound king Floyd “Pretty Boy” Mayweather, Hatton faces tough 33 year old Juan Lazcano this coming May 24th. Long ago a huge success with regard to ticket sales (over 50,000 sold), the fight is sure to be an exciting night for the Hatton faithful..

Ricky himself is certainly looking forward to the fight. In an interview with Sky Sports, “The Hitman” told of how he believes the fight on the 24th could very well be one of the best fights of his entire career.

“It’s going to be a special night,” Ricky told SkySports.com. “It’s going to be entertaining from start to finish and it’s sort of one not to miss, a real event. I think it will be one of the best fights in my boxing career. The way Lazcano fights and the way I fight it’s going to have you on the edge of your seat. Also with the atmosphere – with 55,000 there – I think it will be one of the best nights in my career and bearing in mind I’ve had some good nights so far, that is saying something!”

Ricky, now with a record of 43-1(31), is definitely sounding pumped up for his first fight since December 8th. And while some have, rightfully, questioned the quality of Juan Lazcano as an opponent for “The Hitman,” what with the 33 year old not having fought in well over one year, there is little doubt the fight will generate a superb atmosphere. The action should not disappoint either. As Ricky says, both men come to fight and that should almost certainly result in a fan-friendly type of fight for as long as the bout lasts.

Ricky went on to say how he feels he will be an even better fighter the second time around – or post-Mayweather, if you prefer.

“I think the best is yet to come and I know that sounds daft with what I’ve already achieved and with losing my last fight, but greatness is not proved until the first time you get beat. Greatness is proved by what happens after you’ve been beaten.”

It sounds as though the 29 year old “Hitman” is far from finished as a top class fighter, at least in his opinion. The first step towards achieving the greatness Ricky spoke of comes on May 24th against the 37-4-1(27) Juan Lazcano.
