by James Slater: Fight fans will remember all too well the tough and very exciting fights former WBA middleweight champion Jorge Castro of Argentina gave them. Battling the likes of Reggie Johnson (twice), Roberto Duran (also twice) and John David Jackson (in an almost unbelievable fight that saw the badly battered Castro somehow come back to win by sensational KO in round 9), Castro always gave his all.. Now, according to BoxRec.com, the 40 year old Argentinean legend is set to come back one more time.
Scheduled to face one Miguel Angel Arroyo – a fellow Argentine with a 86-17-5(55)record, who will also be embarking on the comeback trail after not having fought since September of 2005 (a loss) – Castro will be having his first fight in well over a year. The fight is set for May 16th, in Argentina. After having engaged in almost 150 pro fights, in compiling an amazing record of 130-11-3(90), it was assumed Castro had done all he would do in the sport of boxing. But no, Jorge is yet another fighter who simply cannot hang up the gloves for good.
It is not known at what weight May 16th’s bout will take place at. Castro, who has boxed as high as cruiserweight even though he stands just 5’9,” will be taking on a guy who is a natural super-middleweight in Arroyo. Castro’s last few fights, back in the years 2005, 06 and 07 were at light-heavyweight, so maybe this is the weight he will come back at. It’s not clear what he will have left, by any stretch, but Castro, unless he is totally shot (which is a possibility), should beat Arroyo. Even older than Castro at age 43, southpaw Arroyo has not won a fight since way back in May of 2005. A decent fighter who once fought for the WBC International middleweight belt (losing on points over 12), Arroyo has surely achieved all he is going to in his career.
Durable enough – Arroya has only been stopped 7 times in over 100 fights – the 43 year old will likely stick around for a few rounds. But Castro, whose last fight was a 2nd round stoppage victory in a rematch with Jose Luis Herrera , having lost fight one with Herrera by 4th round TKO, will not prove much by beating his countryman.
One of boxing’s truly fearless warriors, who has only ever been stopped twice, Jorge Castro should really be putting his feet up these days, and reflecting on a quite remarkable boxing career. Not attempting to revive it.
