by James Slater: British juggernaut Danny Williams fights on tonight’s under-card of the Clinton Woods-Antonio Tarver/Chad Dawson-Glen Johnson doubleheader in Florida. At first it was reported Williams would face former IBF cruiserweight champ Alfred Cole.. This didn’t go down too well with most, however, considering Cole’s recent results and current age. So now, by way of a better option the 34 year old, Williams faces fellow heavyweight Marcus McGee of Alabama.
This is a definite slight step up from Cole, yet at the same time McGee is a fighter Danny should be able to handle with some ease. Williams, he of the notoriously fluctuating poundage, has weighed in at 258 pounds – a reasonable weight for him, and will look to get back on the winning track with a victory over the 36 year old known as “Migraine.”
McGee, 20-15(10) has been active of late, and has been in with his share of good names – he is also coming into tonight’s fight off a KO win. During a career that began back in 2000 at around the 200 pound mark, McGee ( who weighed in for tonight’s bout at 233) has faced formidable opposition such as Michael Grant (L8) Jameel McCline (L10) Vladimir Virchis (KO by3) T.J Wilson (L10) and current hot prospect Odlanier Soils (KO by 2). Unfortunately, however, there is not one single decent name over which McGee has a win. Still, he is normally pretty durable, having only been stopped twice in the last three years.
McGee should put up a stiffer bit of competition than the ancient and ring rusty Al Cole would have done. Having said that, if Williams in any way struggles it will be a sure sign that he is heading towards the end. One never really knows with a guy such as Danny. He can look great one night, lousy as hell the next. The 34 year old could certainly do with a plus in his win column now, that’s for sure. In his last four bouts, Danny has only emerged victorious the one time – his good, low weight showing against fellow Brit Scott Gammer back in March of last year.
Unless he falls victim to one of the more shocking upsets of the last few months, Danny Williams get his second win in just over 12 months tonight. Then we will see if he is serious about his desire to finish off his career with a bang. Look for Williams to win inside 3 rounds tonight.
