Lawton To Khan: “You’re a step backwards for me”

29.08.07 – Werrington’s Scott Lawton came face to face with Amir Khan today at a press conference held in the council chamber of Nottingham City Council. The pair will meet in the ring at the city’s National Ice Arena on 6th October when Khan’s Commonwealth lightweight title may be on the line..

During the conference Lawton, with his unique brand of child-like honesty, sent Khan onto the back foot when he declared that: “Amir is a step backwards for me. I see this fight as a stepping-stone to a re-match with Jon Thaxton. Thaxton is the best lightweight in the country and I want his British title.”

Khan responded by suggesting that he was the biggest name in British boxing and therefore Lawton’s biggest fight to date. He did however acknowledge that Thaxton warranted greater media attention and that he would take on the Norwich man at some future date.

Lawton insisted: “It’s Thaxton and a British title that I want and I just see you (Amir) as a way of getting another shot at him.”

Both fighters looked fit and confirmed that they were in training and that they had each been studying the other’s fights on video. Neither boxer would be drawn on tactics but both Khan and Lawton agreed that Amir would be working hard to iron out any inadequacies in his game that led to the knockdown by Willie Limmond last time out.

Meanwhile, Scott Lawton is also busy preparing for Impact Boxing’s own event which takes place at Fenton Manor Sports Complex on 29th September. The event will now feature seven bouts including Chris Edwards in a warm up fight before his own British and Commonwealth featherweight title bout with Dale Robinson.

Tickets for the Khan fight are selling well with over 300 having been purchased by Lawton supporters already. Demand for seats is very high and the event is likely to be a sell-out. Tickets for both shows are available from Impact Boxing in Stoke on 0845 156 7168 or by visiting www.impactboxing.com
