July 15, 2007-Newark, NJ-Lion Heart Boxing Productions is putting together an ambitious, eclectic ledger of bouts, as professional boxing makes its triumphant return to the “Brick City” a.k.a. Newark, NJ, on Thursday night July 19 at the luxurious Robert Treat Hotel. Lion Heart expects a ten-bout card featuring heavyweights through lightweights..
The “Brick City Battles” will feature former IBF Cruiserweight Champion Imamu Mayfield 25-8-2, 18 KO’s. Mayfield looks forward to some home cooking in New Jersey after fighting overseas in his last two bouts. Unbeaten heavyweight Faruq “The Dream” Saleem expects to advance the American effort in boxing’s top division and become a key player in the title picture. Last month Saleem made the trip down the New Jersey Turnpike to Philadelphia and picked up a first round knockout at the legendary Blue Horizon to push his record to 36-0, 32 KO’s.
Saleem will be joined by another undefeated Newark resident, Alex “The Brick City Bullet” Perez. Perez, is a great-looking welterweight who sports a record of 8-0, 6 KO’s. A punishing southpaw, Perez is coming off a spectacular first round knockout victory back in June.
Archak “Shark Attack” Ter-Meliksetian, an extremely dangerous junior middleweight, looks to get back into the prospect picture in his scheduled 6 rounder. Ter-Meliksetian has been in with many top-tier fighters including Sergio Mora and Giovanni Lorenzo both of whom he had in major danger. Ter-Meliksetian of Paterson, NJ, will enter the ring at 16-5, 13 KO’s, and his power and style are always crowd-pleasing.
Two local prospects to keep an eye on, lightweights Danny “Little Mac” McDermott and Nick “Lil’ Nicky” DeMarco, are also scheduled to appear on Thursday. After a long layoff, McDermott, 4-0-1, 2 KO’s, resumed his winning ways last month with a vicious knockout of Brian Gadson.
DeMarco, 2-0, 2 KO’s was scheduled to fight on the Emmanuel Nwodo vs. Darnell Wilson undercard, two weeks ago on ESPN, but the bout was furloughed because of the emergency situation that followed the crushing knockout that Nwodo suffered. DeMarco took the cancellation in stride, and he immediately took another fight. DeMarco says he is going to stay as busy as possible, as he looks to climb the ranks of his division.
In addition to the action in the ring, Lion Heart will be honoring former Cruiserweight contender and Newark native William Bo James. James, who fought Bernard Hopkins and David Telesco, contributes to the community as a Fireman and a National Guard Soldier.
