Champs corner: De La Hoya, Mayweather, Marquez, Pacquiao and More!

27.04.07 – By Ron “Champ” Miller: Hello fight fans! Your humble correspondent is back. The man who tells it like it is. I’m in no one’s pocket. I have no allegiances. I have no friends. The man you love to hate. The man of the hour, too sweet to be sour! You know THIS, man! I’m bringin’ sexy boxing back. Read on.

First, I want to thank you fans for bringing the ole boy back. I have been in hibernation for the past few years. But I couldn’t take it anymore. I’ve been on the sidelines for too long. I appreciate the emails, phone calls, snail mails, etc. Lots of folks have tried to imitate the champ, but there is only one. One “writer” tried to copy Champs Corner. Please. THE CHAMP IS BACK, and I ain’t talkin’ about John Cena.

As I’ve mentioned before, for me boxing died when Lennox Lewis retired. Sure, I would still watch, but it seems the sport, for the most part, was on the decline. Not a lot of great, big fights. I am a big heavyweight fan, and well, you know the deal there. As I predicted, Lennox Lewis is missed. Look at the division now. Euro’s here, Euro’s there. It makes me sick. Joe Louis is rolling in his grave. Who is the ‘last line of defense’ for the USA? Evander ‘Holyhypocrit’? Please. This man is so old, that Moses was in his yearbook. And his competition? It sucks. Oleg Platov? Who is that? You don’t know, either? Evan Fields says he will be undisputed. I disagree. He will either die of old age or get hurt badly. Dude really needs to give it up. It’s embarrassing. More than his steroid abuse.

On my recent trip to Laughlin, Nevada (yes, the place where blue hairs rule and water sports are the norm) I put a lot of shekels on pretty boy Floyd Mayweather. This was after I had initially liked Oscar Dela Hoya. Then I got to thinking. Oscar is past his prime. Though the ring, gloves and judges favor Oscar (who will be the referee, Mr. Yoko Jin, Shane Mosley?), I can’t bet against the #1 pd for pd fighter. Puncher’s chance? This really means no chance, to me. Speed ALWAYS beats power. This will be the case on May 5th. And the odds continue to drop. When I rolled into town on Monday, the odds were -200 to -220 on Floyd. When I rolled out of town on Wednesday I bet him at -185. Not bad, in my opinion. Perhaps the odds will drop further, I don’t know. But a ‘win’ is a win. I will take it. More on this fight as we get closer. I also bet on the Spurs at 5-1, so what do I know?

Champs Flurries: Not sure what the outrage is about the Juan Manuel Marquez-Marco Antonio Barrera fight. I had Marquez winning that fight. Ole Roy Jones Jr is back. Please go away, Roy. It’s over, man. Your legacy is what it is. Ain’t nothin gonna change that. As my friend Joe King says, “Good Night, Roy.” So much for the ‘Contender’. Peter “Manfraido” Manfredo was awful. You could see the difference in class. This was no TV reality show. And some thought he would win that fight against Calzaghe? I have some swampland for sale in Jersey. I am so glad Mora-Taylor is not happening, for that reason.

However, I am not that much more impressed with Taylor-Spinks. Taylor wanted 10M to fight Joe. Give me a break. I would favor Calzaghe over him, Kessler, Taylor, Hopkins, Woods and throw ole Roy Jones Jr. in that mix as well. Oh wait, Roy could have fought him years ago, so much for that. Wright-Calzaghe would be a great fight. And I was not a big Joe fan, till he brutalized Jeff Lacy. I just wish he would fight some big fights like he promised.

Ward to train Gatti? What’s next? It’s getting ridiculous. I’m so tired of these two punching bags. Antonio Tarver returns. It appears Castillejo-Sturm is back on. Should be interesting. Judah-Cotto is intriguing. I really think Zap has a shot here. Another barnburner might be Freitas-Diaz. And don’t forget about Margarito-Williams. Byrd is back, anyone care? Same with Toney. Still can’t believe Maske beat Hill. I was actually going to put a wager on Henry.

Darchinyan seeking foes? Please. F(Arce)y is right in front of you. What about Montiel, then? PacMan won again. So much for distractions. Would love to see a rematch between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. And the Valuev era is over, thank God. Last but not least, Larry Merchant. End of a era? That would be sad and a shame. Mike Tyson in trouble again. What’s
new?

Well that’s it fight fans!!! Keep your hands up, and keep punching for the stars!
