Carl Froch Vs. Sergey Tatevosyan Report – “The Cobra” Makes A Statement!

froch24.03.07 – By James Slater: Tonight, in a boxing bout scheduled for twelve rounds at super middleweight, Britain’s Carl Froch (photo by Crhis Royle) stepped up in class against the world ranked Russian Sergey Tatevosyan in Nottingham. The class of “The Cobra’s” opposition may have been a higher one than he’d faced before – at least on paper – yet the result was the same. Tatevosyan had never been stopped in his 26-7 record (14 KO’s) but that statistic was obliterated tonight. In the process of becoming the first to flatten the thirty-four year old southpaw Carl made a very impressive statement to all other super middleweights in the sport.

In the first, Froch, 20-0 (16 KO’s) going in, came out with his habitually low held hands, firing out flicking left jabs. He also opened up in quick bursts with both fists on occasion, while the older man was content to trudge forward with a high guard. Carl won the round, a fairly eventless one, sure enough. A big right to the head in the last twenty seconds of the session tested the Russian’s chin, and the durable veteran took the shot well. Froch’s round, 10-9.

In round two, Froch continued to pick his punches well, while the visiting fighter again tried to press forward. Carl went to the body a little in this round and when he opened up he looked extremely sharp..

“The Cobra” was very, very focused tonight. Then, with about two minutes gone, Froch really went to work on his man. He let loose with a combination, the final punch of which – a right to the jaw – sent Sergey crashing to the mat. He beat the count, but was then smashed into a corner where Froch blazed away with over a dozen head shots, which got him his stoppage win. There were no complaints from the Russian camp after the referee had dived in to save Tatevosyan from further boxing punishment. The time of the stoppage was two minutes and forty-four seconds of round number two.

With this win, his twenty-first, Carl definitely served notice to the likes of Joe Calzaghe and co. In fact, as expected, he again called out “The Pride of Wales” in the boxing post-fight interview. With the punches that stopped the tough Russian in his possession, Carl Froch looks as though he is a threat to anyone at 168 pounds.

Froch improved to 21-0 (17KO’s) while Tatevosyan fell to 26-8 (14 KO’s).
