Grzegorz “Super G” Proksa takes on Steve Conway

13.12.06 – By Ryszard Koczura, www.Boxing.pl – WBC & IBF youth middleweight champion Grzegorz Proksa faces a hard task on Friday. The Polish prospect is scheduled to fight experienced Steve Conway, who has 41 bouts under his belt, including winning IBO world championship. The fight will take place in Bethnal Green, London, on the undercard of Howard Eastman vs Richard Williams clash for the British middleweight championship..

Conway (34-7, 6 KOs) has a few losses in his record, but against good opposition: Pedro Miranda, Youri Romanov, Alex Arthur, and Attila Kovacs are top European fighters, and Junior Witter is current world champion.

In 2005 and 2006 Conway scored back-to-back wins over Hungary’s Mihaly Kotai, who is (or maybe was, as I don’t know whether Kotai is going to fight again) a stablemate of Proksa. The first bout was a 10-round non title affair (Conway scored a knockdown); in the second fight Conway claimed IBO light middleweight title.

This definitely heats up the atmosphere, as Super G wants to avenge his friend.

Both are southpaws. Steve is a bit taller.

22-year-old Proksa trains in Budapest. During last weeks he sparred with Jyrki Vierela of Finland, and strong Nottingham’s fighter Adnan Amar.

Super G would like to close the year with a strong finish. In 2006 he had four fights. Most important were for the WBC and IBF youth titles: in March he stopped then unbeaten Kenneth Van Eesvelde in seven rounds, and in October outscored tough Argentinean Ignacio Fraga over ten one-sided rounds.

Proksa is now 8-0 with five stoppage wins. Before turning professional, he had a successful amateur career. He was a two-time youth national champion and one-time senior champion, but the biggest achievement was winning a silver medal on European youth championships in 2003.

With his crowd-pleasing style, he’s definitely one to watch. He likes to fight keeping his hands low, relying on reflexes and upper body movement, and attacking from all angles.
