ESPN 2 boxing at New Alhambra in Philly on Aug. 2

19.07.06 – Junior middleweight Jose “El Macho” Medina, of Philadelphia, will box Clarence “Sonny Bono” Taylor, of Wilmington, DE, in the eight-round semifinal Wednesday evening, Aug. 2, at the New Alhambra, Swanson & Ritner Streets, next to Forman Mills, in South Philadelphia. ESPN 2 will televise the card, headlined by the USBA featherweight title fight featuring champion Rogers Mtagwa, of South Philadelphia, and challenger Alvin Brown, of Kansas City, MO. First fight at 7.30 pm; ESPN 2 goes live at 9 pm..

Light-heavyweights Chuckie Cavallo, of Trenton, NJ, and Michael Eatmon, of Wilson, NC, meet in a six-round contest, which will be part of the telecast.

Medina, 30, of North Philadelphia, is coming off the finest performance of his career, an eight-round split decision over Marcos Primera, of Asheboro, NC, on June 3 in Trenton, NJ. Medina knocked Primera down in the fourth round.

A pro since 2002, Medina has a 13-6 record, 10 knockouts.

Taylor, 34, lost an eight-round decision to Billy Lyell, of Warren, OH, on May 12 in Tampa, FL. Prior to that, he knocked out Luis Alberto Santiago, of Philadelphia, in the first round March 3 in Lancaster, PA.

Earlier on Feb. 24, Taylor lost an eight-round majority decision to local rival and former world-title challenger Larry Marks at Dover (DE) Downs Slots.

Taylor has a 10-9-2 record, 5 K0s, since turning pro in 2001.

The 21-year-old Cavallo, who had only four amateur fights, is 9-0, 3 K0s, in less than two years as a pro. The 6-foot-3 light-heavyweight scored his most impressive win June 3 in Trenton, NJ, when he K0d William Santiago, of San Juan, PR, in the sixth round.

Eatmon, 33, knocked out Tony Pope, of Norfolk, VA, in his last fight June 24 in Wilson, NC. He has never been stopped, losing a six-round decision to unbeaten prospect Andre Dirrell, of Flint, MI, on April 21 in Mt. Pleasant, SC.
