Australian Action: Fenech Fight Night

09.10.05 – By Tony Nobbs: In a match up of southpaws, Matthew Paulley captured the vacant IBO Asia Pacific welterweight title with a unanimous decision over credible Indonesian Aswin Cabuay at Campbelltown Catholic Club in Sydney, NSW on Friday night. A good win for the former Australian jnr welterweight champion who scored a knockdown in the closing stages of round four. Paulley, now trained by Phil Cropper looks to be improving each time out and after a difficult first round settled in and did enough to combat the crafty import the rest of the way. Pre fight many had tipped a surprise and after the match it was revealed Cabuay had a broken hand, claiming it came in the opening three minutes. Scores 100-89, 99-91, 98-92.

Another Cropper protégé, popular local Rob Medley stopped Wollongong’s Wade Clout in round five to take home the Australian jnr middleweight belt. Medley looks an impressive prospect and is next to defend against Queensland state champion Matt Burns on November 4 at Blacktown. Clout, a former Australian jnr lightweight title challenger took the fight on a week and a bit notice when the championship was vacated by Garry Comer and wants a December rematch.

Billy Dib stopped outsized Filipino Rey Martizano on towel at 2 min 47 of the first round at lightweight.

Former amateur star, Davey Browne made his professional debut scoring a three round cut eye stoppage of game Matt Merideth from Queensland at super bantamweight. Merideth was dropped in round one by a straight right hand but came back in round two to land some clean shots in an exciting round. Browne, brother of recent two time featherweight title challenger Tommy,
was getting the better of a see saw battle when the end came.

Promising Michael O’Donnell stopped Clint Johnson at 2 min 59 of round one at cruiserweight.

In the show opener, the entertaining Sonni Michael Angelo unanimously outpointed Victorian state middleweight champion Chris Collard in a super middle six rounder. Scores: 59-56, 58-56, 58-56. Collard was set to meet Rob Medley who opted out to fight for the national title. In stepped Angelo, the WBF Asia Pacific 160 lb title holder.
