Winky Wright hands in WBC belt

05.03.05 – From WBC President Jose Sulaiman: “Winky Wright has presented to the WBC his resignation of the super welterweight world title, as he has decided to to move up to the middleweight division and fight Tito Trinidad. The WBC has accepted his resignation, and the Board of Governors will vote on the proposal for the Wright-Trinidad fight to be a final elimination bout to determine the WBC’s No. 1-ranked official challenger at 160 pounds.

“The WBC Rules and Regulations state that in any weight division that has a world champion and an interim world champion, if either one steps down, the other will automatically become the undisputed champion of the division. Consequently, Francisco Javier Castillejo of Spain, who was the interim champion, has today officially become the WBC super welterweight champion of the world.”
