10.14.04 – By Tony Nobbs: Anthony Mundine looks toward reclaiming his WBA Super Middleweight title after stopping Australian champion Juarne Dowling in the third round at the Carrara Indoor Stadium on the Gold Coast on Wednesday night. During the opening two heats pumped up Dowling did a good job of pressuring Mundine who remained composed biding his time. In round three Mundine’s hand speed and angle work began to frustrate Juarne and a body shot set up a pearl of a right hand that put the 25 year old local on his back.
Few men would have got up from the shot and Mundine immediately leapt to the ropes in a neutral corner with a couple of his corner even entering the ring. Dowling looked out but knick named ‘100% Balls’ by this writer long ago he not only beat the count but fought back trying to go punch for punch. Mundine is a great finisher, however and after another blitz referee Phil Austin stopped the action at 2.19 with Juarne stumbling back into the ropes.
In under-card action Garth Murray is the hero of North Queensland fans after beating St Gorge Illawarra NRL forward Lance Thompson. Murray scaled 83.7 and gave away 10.5 kg.
Lt Welterweight Ben Rabah stopped Thailand’s Pongpetch Muangurin in three rounds and middleweight Daniel Dawson scored a one round knockout of
Thai Fah Sitheroon.
Roger Izon, brother of David, scored a four round knockout of Aussie # 2 Nathan Briggs in a heavyweight clash. A shot to the mid riff did the damage. Briggs is twin Lt Heavy contender Paul.
Les Herrington won a UD 4 over Tim Minnis at Super Middle and in the opening four rounder, former Australian title challenger Stephen Ng, a middleweight stopped Fab Hona in two rounds. Despite his horrible record, Fab is an honest self trained journeyman who if he got a full time trainer could still be able to put some wins together – at lt welter!
