McDERMOTT Lines Up First Title

20.07.04 – Hard-hitting heavyweight prospect JOHN McDERMOTT is relishing the prospect of his first title opportunity with the news that he has been nominated by the British Boxing Board of Control to fight Mark Krence for the Vacant English Heavyweight title. The 24-year-old from Horndon features in a six-round contest next Friday (30 July) at the York Hall on the undercard of GRAHAM EARL and STEVE MURRAY’s British Lightweight title fight which will serve as a warm up for his title challenge anticipated for the Autumn.

Big Bad John said, “This is fantastic news which has really fired me up to put on a good performance next Friday,

“I feel that the opportunity has come just at the right time in my career and I’m not going to let it pass by,

“Krence is a good fighter but he won’t be able to cope with my hand speed and power,

“The English title is the one I want to win first and make a few defences before going on to challenge for the British title which has been my dream since first putting on the gloves,

“I’m still young for a heavyweight and I’ve got a lot to learn but beating a fighter like Krence will be a good step up the ladder on the domestic scene.”

Krence holds the Midlands Area title and his only defeat was to Audley Harrison over two years ago and even he could not stop the tough
Yorkshireman.

Bedford’s dynamite puncher MATT SKELTON, the former holder of the English title and now the British and Commonwealth Champion, appears on the show in a ten-round International contest against an opponent to be announced shortly.

The show at the York Hall will be televised on Sky Box Office and will feature later that night Danny Williams’ fight against Mike Tyson exclusively live from Louisvelle Kentucky.

The event will be available to Sky digital subscribers for £14.95 on Sky Box Office channel 770. It can be ordered by pressing the red button on the Sky remote handset – there is a £1 booking fee for any orders made by phone. For further information and to order the event viewers can call 08705 800 888. Cable customers should contact their local cable operator for pricing and availability.
