08.06.04 – Following the first successful defence of his commonwealth title against Mark Woolnough last week, Carl Froch feels that he is ready to tackle the best in the super middleweight division.
The 26-year-old continued his rapid progression by becoming the first ever to stop the talented Canadian, breaking him down over eleven rounds with a torrid work rate and a devastating array of shots.
“Woolnough gave me another great learning fight,” said the Cobra.
“He is just the type of talented, tough opponent I need to be beating in order to progress.
“He is also a very awkward southpaw, but I thought I dealt with him well having had no southpaw sparring.”
Carl continued: “That is 23 rounds I have done now in my last two fights, having gone the distance with Charles Adamu – another tidy operator – in March to claim my title.
“Those two wins taught me more than all my others put together.
“I feel like a seasoned campaigner now after just 13 fights.
“This may sound a bit premature but I genuinely believe that given the chance I could handle myself on the world stage right now.
“That is the level of confidence I have in my ability. I know I can come through any challenge, over the full twelve rounds if I have to.
“I have already beaten top-level opponents and already won one traditional title.
“I would have won two if it wasn’t for Tony Dodson’s unfortunate injuries.”
British champion Dodson was to have been Froch’s original opponent on the highly successful Hennessy Sports ‘home II’ event that took place on Wednesday June 2nd.
The Liverpudlian, however, withdrew following a car crash, making way for Woolnough. Thankfully he is expected to make a full recovery.
The situation regarding his domestic crown meanwhile remains unclear.
“It is a case of waiting now for the Board of Control to decide what to do about the British title,” added Froch.
“I have heard that there is a chance that Dodson will be out for some time, so they may nominate me to fight for the vacant title.
“If that was the case then Dodson would presumably be my first defence. I would certainly hope so as I believe a fight between him and me is one the fans really want to see.
“Either way I want that Lonsdale belt; I always have done and I will win it before going on to European and then genuine world honours.”
