Ward likes Khan’s speed and power

WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward has gotten the chance to see Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) up close now that he’s training in the same gym as him in Oakland, California with trainer Virgil Hunter, and Ward likes what he seems. He feels that Khan is throwing with more power than he did previously now that he’s with Hunter, and he thinks he could give anyone in boxing a tough time. Ward didn’t touch on the subject of Khan fighting Mayweather, but obviously he includes him when he says Khan would give anyone trouble.

“He’s [Khan] awkward and hits harder than guys realize,” Ward said to Hustleboss. “He has an awkward style and it works for him. It’s effective. Just the awkwardness, the speed and the pop that he has. I think that would give anyone trouble on any given night.”

Angulo getting Canelo at the right moment

Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) is getting the 23-year-old Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) at exact the fight point in time to pull out an upset on March 8th when the two fighters go at it on Showtime pay-per-view at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Canelo was badly schooled in his last fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September in losing a 12 round decision, and Canelo looked like he didn’t have a clue in how to go about fighting Mayweather.

Canelo had talked for weeks leading up to the fight that he had the perfect game plan to beat Mayweather, and enough fans took the red-haired Canelo for his word to purchase the fight on PPV. But instead of having a game plan, Canelo tried to box Mayweather for most of the fight, and he ended up looking silly. By the time Canelo changed his tactics in the 9th round, he was too far behind to win and he ended up getting clowned.

Ariza thinks Mayweather may be looking at all the polls in deciding his next opponent

Strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza thinks Floyd Mayweather Jr. may be using more than one poll in coming to a decision about who he should fight next between Amir Khan and Marcos Maidana. Khan thought he had the It makes sense. Maidana smashed Khan in three independent polls – ESPN, Fightnews and RingTV – in winning by wide margins where fans weren’t required to log in with a Facebook or Twitter account in order to vote.

Khan: People want to see Mayweather with a different style than Maidana’s

Amir Khan is still trying to sell himself as the right opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr. by pointing out the flaws in the game of WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana. Khan believes that fans ultimately will prefer himself as Mayweather’s next opponent rather than Maidana because fans have already seen Mayweather fight a lot of slow fighters. So they now will want to see him face a guy with quick hands and quick feet. Khan thinks Mayweather had problems beating Zab Judah many years ago due to Judah’s fast hands. Khan thinks that this is the weakness in Mayweather’s game him fighting guys with hand speed.

“People want to see Floyd in with a different style,” Khan said to Hustleboss. “If you think about the last three opponents Floyd has faced, they got slow feet, slow hands…I think that suits Floyd Mayweather. What Floyd Mayweather has problems with is speed, explosiveness, and movement, which not many fighters bring to him.”

Mayweather still not ready to announce his next opponent

Amir Khan and Marcos Maidana are still very much in the running for the May 3rd fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. For whatever reason, it’s taking Mayweather longer this time to announce his next opponent compared to in the past. That’s probably a good thing for the fans because it hopefully means he won’t be selecting an opponent that fans project to have absolutely no chance of winning.

Unfortunately, you can make a pretty good case that both Khan and Maidana are guys that Mayweather will easily deal with on May 3rd, so in that sense they’re interchangeable. The only difference between them is that one of them will bring in more pay-per-view buys than the other, and obviously Mayweather and his team are trying to figure that out so that they don’t end up with an opponent that boxing fans feel will have no chance.

Fury sees himself easily beat Chisora this Summer

Heavyweight Tyson Fury (22-0, 16 KO’s) isn’t worried in the least about the new and improved Dereck Chisora (20-4, 13 KO’s) now that he’s shed 15-20 lbs of fat and is fighting at a leaner and meaner weight for him. Chisora and Fury are heading towards a Summer clash in the UK, which will likely be a WBO heavyweight eliminator bout. Fury feels that he’s going to dominate Chisora just like he did three years ago when they fought in 2011. Fury won the fight by a lopsided 12 round decision over a much fatter 260 lb. Chisora.

Chisora and Fury fought on the same card last night at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK. A heavy-looking Fury dispatched Joey Abell in the 4th round, whereas Chisora battled to a 12 round unanimous over Kevin Johnson. Neither of them looked anywhere near the class of IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in the skills department.

Del Boy en route for chance to avenge loss against Fury in summer showdown

The heavyweight division was the particular focal point of the ‘Rock the Box III’ event staged last night, Feb’ 15th, at the Copper Box Arena, London.

The card was stacked with boxers from differing career levels, with some names only known by a handful of loyal fans and others who will be recognised by the global boxing community, but the two main events were heavyweight bouts that could ultimately make an impact on the division.

To write up the recent state of affairs of the heavyweight division would be merely an attempt to reword the many texts to have been already produced on the matter. The bottom line is: it can only get better.

Smokin’ Joe Frazier: An Appreciation

Like many fans, my introduction to the sweet science came from watching the highlight reel knockouts of Mike Tyson. A casual viewer at first, I soon became enamoured with the sport after watching such greats as Pernell Whitaker, Roy Jones Jr. and Lennox Lewis. Craving more, I decided to check out some of the great fighters of old. Every now and then, ESPN Classics would spotlight fighters such as Roberto Duran, Mohammed Ali or even Sugar Ray Robinson.

Eventually, I came upon Smokin’ Joe Frazier. I had heard the name, of course, but had not seen any of his fights. They were showing his first fight with George Foreman – Kingston, Jamaica in 1973. I could still feel the electricity all these years later as the fighters entered the ring.

And that staredown.

Chris Algieri Wins Dominant Decision Over Emanuel Taylor

Friday night in front of a standing room only crowd at The Paramount and a nationally televised ESPN Friday Night Fights audience, “The Fighting Pride of Huntington”, Chris Algieri won a dominant ten round unanimous decision over world ranked junior welterweight Emanuel Taylor of Baltimore, Maryland by scores of 98-92, and 97-93 twice.

The ESPN Friday Night Fights/Rockin’ Fights 12 event was the 12th consecutive sellout at The Paramount for Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing.

With the win Algieri improved his undefeated record to 19-0 with eight stoppages while Taylor, ranked #4 by the International Boxing Federation moved to 17-2 with twelve knockouts.

Khan encouraging his twitter followers to push for Mayweather fight

Showing signs of worry about his status for his proposed May 3rd fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., Amir Khan is now encouraging his 1.4 million twitter followers to work in his favor to exert pressure on Mayweather Jr. to force him to give him the fight next. Khan did the same tactics to win the twitter/Facebook book in his competition with Marcos Maidana in the poll that Mayweather had created at his promotions website. Khan asked his 1.4 million followers to go to the website and vote for him, and they responded by helping him overcome a huge deficit to defeat Maidana in the poll by a margin of 57% to 43%.
