David Haye speaks about the benefits of fighting on free-to-air TV, downplays pay-per-view
Former WBA heavyweight champ David Haye has not yet officially announced an opponent for his second comeback fight, set once again for The O2 in London, but if “The Hayemaker” has his way, his fight will again appear on free-to-air TV. Haye surprised many by having his January return fight, against Mark de Mori, shown on Dave, a channel usually used to showcase comedy and chat show type fodder. But, despite the surprise, Haye’s one-round blow out attracted over 3 million views.
Alexis Santiago decisions Erik Ruiz in one-sided mismatch
The fight capital of the world played host to this year’s fourth installment of Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) TOE-TO-TOE TUESDAYS on FS1 and BOXEO DE CAMPEONES on FOX Deportes which lived up to its name with a fast-paced all out main event between bantamweights Alexis Santiago (21-3-1, 8 KOs) of Phoenix and Erik Ruiz (15-5, 6 KOs) of Oxnard, CA. Both fighters exchanged back and forth punches throughout the bout, keeping fans at Sam’s Town Live entertained until the final bell. The bout, which went the full 10 rounds, resulted in a unanimous decision victory in favor of Santiago as the judges saw it 100-90, 99-91 and 98-92.
Khan said he’d fight “Money” – for no money! Khan insists Mayweather ducked him
According to Amir Khan himself, the Bolton man wanted a fight with superstar Floyd Mayweather Junior so badly, he offered to fight the 49-0 master for free. Speaking with TMZ Sports, Khan – who got a massive fight with Canelo Alvarez after unsuccessfully chasing Floyd and Manny Pacquiao – also said he had no option but to move up in weight because “no-one in my division wanted to fight me.”
Floyd says he has no desire to lace them up again?
As a Floyd Mayweather fan I must applaud him on a successful pugilistic career. That being said, I know, actually we all know, at some point Floyd is going to return to the ring to put that 50th notch on his belt. I don’t believe his retirement gig!
He said during a recent interview that he could squash the May 7, 2016 bout between Canelo and Amir Khan by calling up Danny Garcia and proposing a fight for that same date. Nothing could be further from the truth then this verbal gestation, nobody would pay their hard-earned dollars, pesos, rubles, pounds or whatever to see this miss-match. Nice try Mr. Mayweather, nice try.
James DeGale to defend IBF super-middleweight title against Mexico’s Rogelio Medina in April or May
Britain’s James DeGale will make the second defence of his IBF super-middleweight title against Mexico’s Rogelio Medina in either April or May in the UK, in what will be the Olympic gold medal winner’s first fight in his own country for 18-months – so reports Mail OnLine.
The southpaw who was last seen out-pointing former champ Lucian Bute in a great action fight in Canada, might face Medina on the April 9th Anthony Joshua-Charles Martin card at The O2 in London, or he may headline a card by himself at a venue to be decided on May 14th, so says promoter Eddie Hearn.
Joseph Parker wants the winner of Joshua-Martin
As much of a big deal as unbeaten heavyweight sensation Anthony Joshua is in the UK, Joseph Parker, a legitimate contender/threat to any heavyweight you could care to mention, is as big a deal in New Zealand. Parker, unbeaten at 18-0(16) has plenty of good judges believing he is the next dominant heavyweight in a division that is suddenly red-hot again.
And Parker, who has been calling out “A.J” for some time now, will continue to target the Londoner, if he beats Charles Martin in April as the bookmakers say will be the case. If not, Parker will happily challenge reigning IBF heavyweight boss Martin.
Rigondeaux: Dickens has guts to get in the ring with me
One of the world’s greatest pound-for-pound fighters and former Unified Super-Bantamweight World Champion Guillermo Rigondeaux and popular British Champion Jazza Dickens took questions from the world’s media last night ahead of their highly anticipated showdown on Saturday 12th March, live and exclusive on BoxNation.
Cuban megastar Rigondeaux, renowned for his devastating hand speed and lightening quick reactions, made it clear that he is gunning for IBF Super-Bantamweight Champion Carl Frampton and WBA Champion Scott Quigg and plans on taking their belts once he has beaten Dickens.
David Price eyes April return in Liverpool, says he wants to come back as “the old David Price”
Liverpool’s David Price, last seen getting knocked out by a man who subsequently failed the post-fight drugs test, has the hunger back. Speaking with The Liverpool Echo, the former British champion who was, not too long ago, looked at as sure thing to win a word title, or at the very least challenge for one, says he wants to start to “take people out again.”
Luis Ortiz and his race against time
Luis Ortiz is scheduled to defend his WBA interim title against Tony Thompson on March 5 in Washington, DC. Ortiz belongs at the top of the division but has a hard time getting the exposure and especially the fights that he deserves.
Ortiz is fighting Thompson as a last resort after he was turned down by 5 other heavyweights. The Cuban is clearly being avoided and there is feeble excuse but obvious reasons for the reluctance of the big boys to face him in the ring. His record is 24-0, his skills are remarkable and he has gone the distance only once in an eight-rounder 6 years ago.
