Mark de Mori on Haye’s ongoing comeback: “His power is ridiculous”

Mark de Mori on Haye’s ongoing comeback: “His power is ridiculous”

David Haye has his critics, plenty of them in fact, but two things cannot be denied: Haye’s punching-power and his box-office appeal. This Saturday (on terrestrial channel ‘Dave’ for UK fight fans) the 35-year-old former champ will continue his comeback as he aims for a shot at regaining at least a slice of the heavyweight crown.

Haye, 27-2(25) and beaten only by Carl Thompson (down at cruiserweight and seemingly an eternity ago now in 2004) and Wladimir Klitschko, will face unbeaten but largely unknown Arnold Gjergjaj in London and, assuming all goes well, he will then face vocal former WBO heavyweight champ Shannon Briggs in September.

Haye defends his choice of opposition: “Gjergjaj is perfect preparation and then I’ll look at a big fight with Briggs”

David Haye, the former undisputed cruiserweight ruler and a former WBA heavyweight champ, continues his comeback this Saturday, against unbeaten but little-known Arnold Gjergjaj in a scheduled 10-rounder at The O2 in London. Gjergjaj is young at age 31 and he has a good-looking 29-0(21) record. However, the critics have, well, criticised Haye’s choice of opponent, some even saying Gjergjaj represents a step down from Haye’s first comeback foe, Mark de Mori.

VIDEO: Wladimir Klitschko has a chance to redefine his legacy

YouTube video

Wladimir Klitschko’s rise to heavyweight dominance wasn’t always smooth sailing. The long time dominant heavyweight champion had several major setbacks on the road to greatness before joining forces with Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward. He had already suffered defeats at the hands of Ross Puritty and Corrie Sanders prior to teaming up with Steward, and then when the two had their first fight together, Wladimir suffered another devastating loss at the hands of Lamon Brewster. It was a disappointing start for the new duo, and in the end it would be the only fight they would lose together before Wladimir began his dominant reign which lasted nearly 10 years where Wladimir had hardly lost any rounds along the way.

Wilder vs Povetkin: Deontay Wilder Statement

Wilder vs Povetkin: Deontay Wilder Statement

MAY 15, 2016 – In the wake of the news on Friday that Alexander Povetkin tested positive for the banned substance meldonium, WBC Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder and his representatives have been made aware of the WBC’s decision on Sunday that the fight will not occur in Moscow on May 21.

“I’m very disappointed that due to Povetkin’s failed drug test the fight is not going to happen on May 21 in Moscow,” said Deontay Wilder. “I had worked very hard to prepare myself for this important title defense, spending the last two weeks training in England to get accustomed to fighting in Europe. I wanted to give the fans a great show, but we understand the WBC’s position that the fight occur on an even playing field.”
