Marcos Maidana: Dignity Restored in 2013!

maidana99991The year 2013 ended with a huge victory for boxing. A much needed sense of dignity was restored to the sports image. A viewing treat by those in attendance, and via worldwide pay per view, from the hard core boxing fan to the general sports fan, school was in session on the night of Saturday, December 14, 2013. That night, the boxing adage that reads on a sign, which hangs on the ring apron, inside of a friends boxing gym, ” you can’t hide what you don’t know in here,” was illustrated in true fashion.

And that illustrator was Argentinian, Marcos Maidana. With a record of 34 (31) – 3, he brought his unorthodox aggressive, power punching style to a championship match. And with that effective style, he rewarded himself, and his training camp, with the WBA world welterweight title! It was that simple. Maidana had honed his skills and found success with that same approach in his previous, and most recently, challenging bouts.

Sanchez wants Sergio Martinez and Quillin for Golovkin

golovkin78483Trainer Abel Sanchez doesn’t understand why WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) and WBO champion Peter Quillin (30-0, 22 KO’s) aren’t trying to fight his guy WBA champion Gennady Golovkin (28-0, 25 KO’s) to prove who the best guy is in the division. Sanchez feels that the excuses that Quillin and Sergio have been making for why they can’t fight Golovkin are pretty weak ones. He feels that they should be willing to step up and take the challenge against Golovkin rather than play it safe against other opponents.

“Peter Quillin stands behind the network [HBO vs. Showtime] right now,” Sanchez said to the Boxing Channel. “If he really wants to prove he’s the best, we’re willing to fight him.

Robert Guerrero wants out of contract with Golden Boy Promotions

guerrero6789After getting his dream fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. last year in May and promptly losing it badly, former two division world champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-2-1, 18 KO’s) reportedly wants out of his contract with Golden Boy Promotions. CEO of Golden Boy Richard Schaefer doesn’t understand why Guerrero would want to leave, as he got him the Mayweather fight, and also got him a fight against Andre Berto. Schaefer recently offered him a fight against unbeaten Keith Thurman last December, but Guerrero turned that fight down for some reason.

Guerrero will try to break the contract by going through arbitration with the California State Athletic Commission, according to ESPN. However, the contract was signed in New York, so it’s possible that they will need to hear this instead of the California Commission.

WBC responds to Tyson Fury’s defamatory statements

fury111
From the office of WBC President Dr. José Sulaimán: It is unacceptable to allow defamatory statements to remain unanswered. The WBC therefore must provide the facts regarding false and defamatory statements made by Tyson Fury.

The facts in Mr. Fury’s case are plain and simple:

· Hennessy Promotions requested the WBC’s support to officially sanction an elimination fight between Fury, then WBC ranked No. 3, vs. Kevin Johnson, who was then ranked only No. 32 by the WBC.

· The WBC accepted to support this promotion with the clear understanding that this was in no way a final elimination, nor would there be any specific implications for the winner.

Daniel Geale vs. Garth Wood on February 19th in Sydney, Australia

geale3Former IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale (29-2, 15 KO’s) will be facing 35-year-old fringe contender Garth Wood (12-3-1, 8 KO’s) on February 19th in an all-Australia clash in Sydney, at the Entertainment Centre. This is Geale’s first fight since his 12 round split decision defeat at the hands of Darren Barker last year in August. Geale has been sitting idle looking for a fight, and this is what he found.

Geale, 32, is interested in fighting WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin for his title in April, but that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen because HBO reportedly isn’t interested in that fight. It’s not surprising that HBO doesn’t want to put on Geale-Golovkin, because Geale hasn’t done anything since his loss to Barker. Fighting #13 WBA, Wood isn’t then type of fight that will redeem Geale in any way, shape or form. It’s just a fight that will make money for Geale in Australia, and nothing more than that.

Chisora vs. Fury II possible for June in heavyweight eliminator

chisora2A rematch between Dereck Chisora (19-4, 13 KO’s) and Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) is being talked about for June of this year in a potential heavyweight title eliminator bout, according to Chisora’s promoter Frank Warren. He’s interested in setting up a second fight between Chisora and Fury and putting it in a large football stadium for the Summer, provided that both of them win their perspective fights on February 15th at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK.

Both guys are fighting on the card in separate fights. For Fury, it’s probably not a big deal, because he’s expected to be matched softly against a weak opponent in a tune-up bout to get some of the cobwebs off after sitting idle for 8 months in trying to get fights against David Haye.

Floyd Sr: Pacquiao could beat Bradley this time

pac554455Manny Pacquiao and his team still haven’t announced who his next opponent will be for his April 12th fight, but it’s assumed that WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley will be the one facing him, as long as he doesn’t price himself out of the fight by asking beyond what Top Rank is willing to give him to be the B-side.

Floyd Mayweather Sr. says he was really impressed with what he saw of Pacquiao in his win over Brandon Rios last November, and based on that fight he feels that Pacquiao could be too much for Bradley in a rematch. Floyd Sr. thought the previous Pacquiao-Bradley fight was one that could have gone either way. He didn’t think Bradley clearly won it or Pacquiao.

Big-hitting Copper Box arena news! Tyson Fury and cousin Hughie added to the show

YouTube video
Promoter Frank Warren announced today that he has agreed a deal with Tyson Fury’s team, represented by Mick Hennessy, for the undefeated heavyweight sensation to fight on the multi-title Copper Box Arena show on Saturday 15th February, live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546).

Fury will feature in an International Heavyweight contest against an opponent to be confirmed, while his big rival Dereck Chisora headlines the action-packed card defending his European Heavyweight title against undefeated and hard-hitting Ukrainian Andriy Rudenko.

If both men emerge victorious at the Copper Box Arena in their fights then it will set up a deal between the two camps for a joint promotion for the long awaited rematch between the two big men – Fury defeated Chisora on points in July 2011 to take his British and Commonwealth belts and undefeated record – that Warren says could happen in June at a football stadium in a huge summer showdown.

Mayweather: Pacquiao is now begging for the fight

floyd7878With Manny Pacquiao’s pay-per-view numbers dropping off badly in his last fight, and with him having lost 2 out of his last 3 fights, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is now gloating about it and seemingly kicking him while he’s down. Mayweather sees Pacquiao in a situation where he needs his help in order to get him out of the hole he’s been put in. But Mayweather says he’s not going to do it. He’s not going to bail Pacquiao out with his IRS problems, or with his problems with his PPV numbers tanking all of a sudden. Mayweather feels that Pacquiao has to deal with these issues on his own without his help.

“Pacquiao missed his opportunity; he had his chance,” Mayweather told Fighthype. “He felt like he was on the same level as me. He wouldn’t have asked for 50-50. So now, two losses later and he’s got a problem.

Shumenov: I want to be the Undisputed Light Heavyweight Champion in 2014

new_beibutBeibut Shumenov, the reigning Light Heavyweight World Boxing Association and the International Boxing Association`s Light Heavyweight Champion and fastest pugilist to obtain a world title in this division in ten bouts; made a triumph return to boxing after being out of the sport for the last 18 months, as he knockdown, previously undefeated, Tamas “Tomi Kid” Kovacs (23-1, 14KOs), three times before referee, Rafael Ramos stopped the bout with 2:55 left in the third round on December 14, 2013 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

He dropped Kovacs with a powerful left hook in the first round, knocked him down with a perfectly timed uppercut in the second round and landed numerous hard hitting punches at Kovacs, who was defenseless in the third round, which caused Kovacs to fall to the canvas again as Ramos, quickly halted the action. This ended a one sided fight that Shumenov dominated and demonstrated that he had little ring rust, despite not fighting in almost a year and a half.
