Not so long ago, it was between David Price and Tyson Fury as to who the next big British heavyweight was going to be, with the two men looking to be on an eventual collision course to decide. Anthony Joshua had barely turned professional.

And then along came wily old veteran Tony Thompson and the wheels came off for David Price. After those two career-derailing knockouts that left Price on the heavyweight scrap heap, Tyson Fury went his own way and is now set to challenge Wladimir Klitschko for the WBO title later this year.

It’s already being billed as a huge domestic clash that will serve as an official eliminator for WBC champion Jorge Linares’ 135 lb title – and after leaking online earlier in the week, promoter Eddie Hearn this morning dropped the news that London 2012 gold medalist Luke Campbell and hometown rival Tommy Coyle, will indeed headline Matchroom’s “Rumble On The Humber” card from Hull’s Craven Park – with ample support coming in the form of Scotland’s Ricky Burns – (who put in a heroic shift vs Omar Figueroa Jr in Texas recently, when he fights a TBA opponent.)

Paul Smith On Andre Ward: I Can’t Let Him Be His Best

Liverpool’s super middleweight contender and former world title challenger Paul Smith goes into the lion’s den on June 20th when he travels to California and attempts to upset the returning Andre Ward in a fight many are viewing as an uphill struggle for the Brit – who is coming off back-to-back losses against Germany’s Arthur Abraham.

Speaking to fighthype.com, Smith was honest in his appraisal of his chances in the fight and clearly recognises he is a big underdog. However, he believes he can upset the odds if he boxes a smart fight – and is buoyed by the American’s inactivity – Ward last stepped through the ropes back in November of 2013.

The hype surrounding big punching British heavyweight Anthony Joshua shows no signs of abating, with the debate and speculation surrounding his next potential opponent thriving across social media.

One name repeatedly linked to the knockout artist is Brixton heavyweight Dillian Whyte, who floored Joshua 6 years ago in their amateur days, en route to earning a scrappy points decision over four undisciplined rounds.

It was “The Villain’s” first amateur contest – and since that evening in 2009, the two men’s careers have gone in contrasting directions, yet now look set to come full circle later this year, possibly in September on Eddie Hearn’s O2 Arena show.

Last weekend we saw big punching British heavyweight prospect Anthony Joshua answer the ‘test’ of Kevin Johnson in emphatic style, making a mockery of the American’s prior credentials of having never previously being stopped throughout his long professional career – the pinnacle of which saw him see the final bell against Vitali Klitschko back in 2009.

The fact he also extended Joshua’s domestic peers Tyson Fury and Dereck Chisora the 12 round distance, has drawn comparisons between the British heavyweight rivals – with a school of thought existing that Joshua could well jump in – and beat – either man tomorrow.

It seems every time I write a piece on Nottingham’s Cobra, Carl Froch, there is a downbeat tone to proceedings these days. And that’s not for want of trying. If I were to be writing about one of his past glories then maybe I could inject some enthusiasm, well – I definitely could, because contrary to popular belief, I’m a big Froch fan – and followed his career throughout his domestic days, through the legendary world title winning fight with Jean Pascal, into the Super Six and beyond.

Right up until now.

And since “knocking out George Groves in front of 80k at Wembley” – by virtue of that phrase alone – Carl Froch has become a parody of himself, a cartoon character – and, thanks to his past reality TV turns – a bit of a “celebrity” over here in England.

Froch Hits Back At DeGale : ‘Wouldn’t Get Past 8 vs Me’

After he vacated his IBF title instead of facing James DeGale (his then mandatory) in the first instance – something that allowed the Londoner to box – and beat – Andre Dirrell in Boston last month for said title, Carl Froch has spoken out (again!) to hit back at DeGale for his recent pu*** slur on him, insisting he is too experienced for the new champion to deal with – and certainly no pu***.

Speaking to TalkSport to criticise DeGale’s history making performance against Dirrell, Froch said;

“I thought he did just what he had to do to win the fight. I thought he could have pressed it home a little bit more when he scored the knockdown, (but) he seemed off the pace and on the back foot towards the end.”

Carl Froch : Brook Has Too Much For Gavin

After they both made weight ahead of their headlining clash tonight, Carl Froch – enjoying his new punditry role with Sky Sports – has offered his opinion on Kell Brook’s IBF title defence against Frankie Gavin – insisting that the Sheffield welterweight will have too much for the Birmingham man.

He said today at the weigh in that Brook “is a tough, tough kid” – something he knows first hand from sparring with him.

Froch is with the vast majority who think that Gavin – despite his fantastic amateur pedigree – will not have the power to trouble the champion and get his respect – despite his skills as a pure boxer.
