Anthony Joshua: If Fury was fit, we’d probably be talking about March

While unbeaten former heavyweight champ (still lineal) Tyson Fury continues to call out reigning WBA/IBF champ Anthony Joshua for his first fight back – the return expected, Fury says, in either April or May – Joshua has replied by stating how this is mere “fantasy” on the part of Fury.

Fury, 25-0, who has hurled all manner of insults at Joshua, 20-0, has questioned whether or not AJ “has the balls” to fight him. In response, Joshua has told the Daily Mail how if it were up to him, he would fight Fury next – but that he cannot do so as, “he’s just not fit, he hasn’t had a fight.”

Not only does Tyson Fury want to fight Anthony Joshua is his very first fight back after well over two years of inactivity, but Fury wants to meet his rival unbeaten heavyweight in a ‘Winner Take All’ showdown. Taking to twitter once more, Fury – who is currently training alongside WBO middleweight champ Billy Joe Saunders – insisted how a fight between he and AJ is not about money to him.

“@anthonyjoshua To prove this fight is not about a few measly pounds for me I’ll do a winner take all! Loser gets nothing but a beating & that loser will be you,” Fury wrote.

Fury, expected to get his licence to box back this month, has taken to social media (again) to call Joshua out. Fury, who changes his mind almost as fast as he punches, says one day how he will look to box a tune-up or warm-up fight upon his ring return, and then the next day he says he doesn’t need any such thing.

British stars Amir Khan and Kell Brook both had a tough time of things back in 2017 (Happy New Year!) – Brook being beaten by Errol Spence in losing his IBF welterweight title and then being sent to hospital (again, with a broken eye socket) and Khan, though not fighting at all, taking something of a hammering from factions of the press due to the events in his personal life and because of his Australian adventure in the jungle (reality TV strikes again!).

Fans have both read and heard the various insults Tyson Fury has hurled Anthony Joshua’s way; the soon to return, unbeaten lineal heavyweight champ vowing to do all manner of things to the reigning WBA/IBF champion when they meet, possibly next summer. And Joshua, usually a reserved, polite and fully respectful person, has had enough of it. AJ says he is no longer able to respect Fury and that Fury has discredited everything he has accomplished.

There were a quite amazing 13 world champions hailing from the UK at the close of last year, while this year, as 2017 reaches its end, the number has more than halved; with six men from these shores holding a legitimate world title. But this is not a reflection on a poor year for British boxing insists promoter Eddie Hearn.

Last year, top names Carl Frampton, James DeGale and Kell Brook, to name three of the then reigning British world champions who have since lost, all seemed set for a long reign.
