American heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder made the first defense of his WBC title when he scored a 9th round KO victory against the lightly regarded Eric Molina. The fight, which took place in Wilder’s home state of Alabama, saw the champion drop the challenger 3 times before viciously stopping him with a fourth knockdown in the 9th round which prompted referee Jack Reiss to immediately call a halt to the bout. With the victory, Wilder improved to 34-0, with 33 of his victories coming inside the distance.

Floyd Mayweather Rips Golovkin … You’re a Nobody!

Floyd Mayweather Rips Golovkin ... You're a Nobody!

Floyd Mayweather is already trading shots with Gennady Golovkin … telling TMZ Sports the guy’s just running his mouth for a payday — and he’s way out of his league. Golovkin — who’s knocked out his last 20 opponents — told us Mayweather would be his “dream fight” and is 100% certain he’d win if they ever got in the ring together.

Now, Mayweather’s camp is issuing a response … saying, “Everyone in boxing wants to fight Floyd. It’s the biggest payday they could possibly have.”

“[Golovkin] has never fought a top opponent in his whole career … we’re surprised you guys would even have him on your show to be honest.”

Sounds like fightin’ words.

Erislandy Lara Don’t Care

1-EW5G1434

It was a one sided fight. Not that anyone was really surprised by that, Delvin Rodriguez has had a long career and has been in more than his share of ring wars. After having been brutalized by a reinvigorated Miguel Cotto in 2013, few would have imagined him getting another shot at a title belt. Yet there he was, matched up with the slick Cuban fighter Erislandy Lara, for Lara’s WBA Super welterweight belt, in the headlining card on Spike TVs latest edition of Fright Night Lights Out. Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Championship series was ready to showcase Lara’s talents to a national audience, and they believed that Delvin was the tough, gritty type of fighter who would provide just enough of a challenge to allow their charge to shine. They just forgot one thing: Erislandy Lara don’t care.

Wilder Promising Knockout Performance

Wilder Promising Knockout Performance

When Deontay Wilder steps through the ropes on Saturday to make the maiden defence of his WBC heavyweight title, those who follow boxing with a little bit more fervour than the man-in-the-street, will realize they are about to witness what should be nothing more than routine business for the big-punching Alabama born man.

Fighting in his home state, which will incidentally be hosting it’s first ever world title fight, “The Bronze Bomber” has promised his hometown fans that they will see a knockout performance from the man who has stopped all of his opponents – with the exception of Bermane Stiverne back in January.

10 Boxers that can Test Anthony Joshua

10 Boxers that can Test Anthony Joshua

It takes something very special to steal a show from three world title fights, all in one night, all on one card. And for that something special to come from a 12 fight novice is something even more impressive.

Yet, special and impressive are understatements in regards to just how good Anthony Joshua looked on the Rule Britannia Matchroom Boxing card last Saturday in London. Joshua put in a performance so devastatingly good many think he may be one of the very best in the division already, just 18 months into his professional career.

Miguel Cotto vs. Daniel Geale: Catch Me If You Can

Miguel Cotto vs. Daniel Geale: Catch Me If You Can

Live on HBO from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, Miguel Cotto and Daniel Geale meet for the lineal middleweight title. Instead of breaking down the X’s and O’s of the matchup the pugilist masses are mainly fixated on the number 157. That is the number Geale must hit to prevent a possible cancellation. Cotto’s image has taken a big hit of late and even if he does make a big statement this Saturday night the damage is deep. They might as well of called this fight Cotto vs. Geale: To Catch A Mockingbird.

Barring a minor roadblock the only major obstacle that stands in the way of an HBO PPV fight between Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez is Daniel Geale. The Aussie has middleweight contender pedigree it’s just too bad that this bout won’t be contested at 160. Instead, this bout will be fought at a catchweight of 157 pounds. Judging by the comments made by both camps in the lead-up it sounds as though sticking to their guns is the plan.

Amir Khan – King of What?

Amir Khan – King of What?

I have long been a vocal supporter of Amir Khan, but he seems to be doing his utmost to alienate anybody who still has the belief in him to back him against his many detractors. He has now had a minimum of 2 opportunities to sign up to a World title fight and he has rejected them both. His last fight was against an opponent who was, with all due respect, completely irrelevant. His excuses are changing every time; I want Mayweather, I want Pacquiaio, I want World title fights, and now apparently Kell Brook is not worthy of a fight with King Khan. It is becoming harder and harder to argue that Khan is one of the top fighters in the Welterweight division and, perhaps more importantly, I no longer want to try.

The Excuses Start From Amir Khan

YouTube video

We all witnessed it on Friday night. Britain’s Amir Khan receiving every bit of scorecard and referee assistance possible in a ludicrously scored contest (2 cards of 117-111 were extreme) against game American Chris Algieri, who not being a noted puncher – was a man he was supposed to blow away.

Does Amir Khan deserve a fight with Floyd Mayweather? (VIDEO)

Amir Khan improved to 31-3 when he was awarded a unanimous decision victory against Chris Algieri this past Friday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. Two of the judges (Benoit Roussel and Joseph Pasquale) scored the bout 117-111 for Khan, in a bout that seemed far more competitive than those tallies suggest. Don Ackerman’s score of 115-113 for Khan seemed much closer to the mark. With the loss Algieri’s record drops to 20-2, having now lost 2 in a row since making a name for himself with his upset victory against Ruslan Provodnikov one year ago.

Khan in safe hands

Khan in safe hands

A good strategy is best judged by the long-term results it delivers in any form of business, boxing is no different. A solid plan can be the difference between the maximization of a fighters talents or future theoretical discussions of what might have been.

So, when Virgil Hunter spoke at Tuesday’s final press conference ahead of tonight’s clash between his improving charge Amir Khan, 30-3 (19KO’s), and New York native Chris Algieri, 20-1 (8KO’s), we would do well to listen.

“Strategy, always strategy. Success in life comes from strategy.” Proclaimed Hunter.
