Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. earned a unanimous decision (97-92, 98-91, 96-93) over Marcos Reyes in the main event of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on Saturday in front of 9,245 at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas.
Reyes was the more active fighter – he doubled Chavez’s output – but simply couldn’t hurt his larger opponent. Following a loss at light heavyweight last April, Chavez decided to attempt to campaign at super middleweight.
Scott Quigg v Kiko Martinez
Regular WBA World bantamweight champion Scott Quigg, 31-0-2 (23KO’s), laid down a marker the size of the Manchester Arena tonight blasting former World super bantamweight champion Kiko Martinez, 32-6 (24KO’s) to pieces inside two rounds, in front of a packed hometown crowd.
Midway through the 2nd round, Quigg took absolutely everything from his Spanish opponent – who seemed to be warming to the task after an encouraging opener – with an enormous right uppercut that dipped his legs and left him laid on the canvas moments later following a further assault from the vicious champion.
El Paso, Texas (July 18) – Undefeated Irish star Carl “The Jackal” Frampton (21-0, 14 KOs) showed massive heart and determination, as he successfully defended his junior featherweight title against Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. (25-2-2, 15 KOs) at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso and live on PBC on CBS. Fighting in his U.S. debut. Frampton was knocked down twice in the first round, but bounced back in impressive fashion to win via unanimous decision (116-108 twice and 115-109).
Gonzalez Jr. came out swinging and hit Frampton with a hard straight left jab less than a minute into the fight, sending the Northern Ireland-native to the canvas for the first time in his career. Frampton was knocked down again with less than 15 seconds left in the as first, when Gonzalez hit Frampton with a sharp right hand behind his ear. Gonzalez was deducted a point in the third round for a low blow and again in the 11th.
Abraham hurt Stieglitz with an overhand right in the opening seconds of the 6th. Stieglitz continued to press forward despite being hurt. Abraham followed up with some clubbing shots that ended with him blasting Stieglitz with a right to the head that send him down. Stieglitz got to his feet but his corner waived the towel to referee Earl Brown to have the bout stopped.

Cuenca, whose slate was 47-0 with only 2 knockouts – yes you did read that right – came in having never boxed outside his home country, and at 34 years old, wasn’t necessarily meant to present too tough a task for the fighter known as “The Wildman”.
Sadly for Yang, he more than lived up to his nickname, and was sloppy, slow and continually frustrated by the slick footwork, fast hands and accurate counter punching of Cuencas, who looked every inch the master boxer for the duration of the contest.
Now fighting back down at 122 lbs, the “Filipino Flash” Nonito Donaire today took less than 2 rounds to dispose of Frenchman Anthony Settoul in Macau, China, in a ruthless display of speed, accuracy and power, that floored the French fighter three times and sent a loud warning shot to Britain’s Scott Quigg : “Be careful what you wish for.”
Quigg goes into battle tonight against former IBF 122 lb champion Kiko Martinez in Manchester, and should he win that fight, promoter Eddie Hearn has lined up 4 weight world champion Donaire for the next defense of the Englishman’s WBA (reg) super bantamweight strap – however after today’s display it is more than clear that the 32 year old Filipino veteran isn’t done yet.

Undefeated middleweight Antoine “Action” Douglas (18-0-1, 12 KOs) of Washington D.C. finished off Istvan “The Prince” Szili (18-1-2, 8 KOs) of Frekendorf, Switzerland with an impressive third round TKO in the main event of ShoBox: The New Generation, Friday, July 17 from Sands Casino Hotel in Bethlehem, Pa. The event was televised live on SHOWTIME.
Both Douglas and Szili, had strong starts. Douglas exploited his reach advantage and strong right, while Szili showcased a few good combinations. However, Douglas showed dominance throughout the round by outlanding Szili 18-to-one in jabs.

WBA “regular” welterweight title holder Keith Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) got the victory tonight in beating B-level fighter Luis Collazo (36-7, 19 KOs) by an 8th round TKO after Collazo told the referee he couldn’t see out of his cut right eye an a fight that was televised on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN from the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Florida.
