Manchester hero Terry Flanagan became WBO World Lightweight Champion after American star Jose Zepeda’s suffered a shock dislocated shoulder in the second round tonight at the Manchester Velodrome.
Flanagan is now the first ever English boxer in history to win a world title in the lightweight division and Manchester’s first world champion since Ricky Hatton.
British hot shot Liam Walsh destroyed Brazilian puncher Isisas Santos Sampaio in six rounds to claim the Vacant WBO Intercontinental title at the Manchester Velodrome tonight with a devastating body shot.
Dublin super-flyweight Jamie Conlan, nicknamed “The Mexican”, last night came up against a real and very tough one in Junior Granados (now 13-3-1) at The National Stadium in the City – the world’s only purpose built boxing arena – and survived numerous scares – including 2 hurtful knockdowns – to battle back from the brink and take the fight on scores of 96-92, 95-92 and 95-93.
Vargas then spent 11 seconds trying to line Bradley up for another big hand, when suddenly referee Pat Russell halted the fight with 10 seconds to go because he thought he had heard the final belt. Vargas, thinking the referee had stopped the fight due to Bradley being badly hurt, immediately started jobbing up and down celebrating thinking he’d scored a knockout.

“This was by far my toughest fight, and my best win as a pro,’’ Wade said. “I knew there was going to be a problem fighting an experienced, totally awkward guy like that. Really, it’s impossible to prepare for a fight like this. But I kept my poise throughout and that was a key.
On a night when the spotlight was firmly fixed on the youngest of the Smith siblings, Callum confirmed once more how special a talent he really is, with a 12 round unanimous decision over the teak tough Frenchman Christophe Rebrasse.

Shawn “Showtime” Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs) fought a good fight and deserved his unanimous decision win over Adrien “The Problem” Broner (30-2-0, 22 KOs) on Premier Boxing Champions on NBC at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, NV. He pressed the action and threw and landed more punches. The judges had no choice but to award him the win. Respectful of his conquered opponent, Shawn explained his win was over a very good fighter, a champion, and he feels it should earn him the right to a fight with Floyd “TBE” Mayweather, Jr., right? Well, that decision is in the hands of one man, and that man is TBE. It’s not likely TBE will select Showtime to be his final opponent. He has bigger fish to fry.
Saturday Broner threw harder, shorter and more accurate punches, just not enough of them to warrant a win. Why he chose to wrestle with Porter is a mystery. He might have mistakenly thought such tactics would eventually slow down Porter, enabling him to gain a later rounds advantage.
By W. White: Last Saturday night, as I observed Super Middleweight champion Andre Ward (28-0, 14KO’s) disassemble Britton Paul Smith (35-6, 20 KO’s) from press row, I had questions. What was the purpose them fighting at a 172lb catch weight? Did Paul Smith purposely coming overweight to give him some sort of advantage? Is this a fight the general boxing public really wanted to see? How would Andre Ward perform given his 19 month absence from the ring? Who could possibly be next after this fight? As the fight progressed and I observed Ward tactfully picking his spots with his jab and sneaking in straight rights through Smith’s guard, I realized it was only a matter of time.
Ward kept Smith in the middle of the ring circling, probing, and striking routinely as Smith surprisingly continued to move forward. By the middle rounds, Smith’s face was flush and beginning to swell. It would seem as if this was just an over-hyped sparring match for Ward to continue to pick a part his opponent and shake of any ring dust. I say dust because there was an apparent lack of rust as Ward seemed sharp, movement wise, defensively and in overall ring generalship.

Barthelemy was strong in his 140-pound debut, landing with his left hand from every angle, including a straight left that knocked DeMarco down in the fourth round. Barthelemy controlled the fight, never allowing the southpaw DeMarco to ramp up the pressure or land anything significant.

Ward spent two of his best years away from the prize ring due to legal and promotional disputes. He came back as shiny as new and kept his opponent in the crossfire for 9 rounds before the bloodied Smith was bailed out by his corner.
If there was any ring rust, it was shadowed by the skill differential which gave Ward full convenience. Coming from a 19 month layoff he was not expected to choose a tough challenge although Smith was no push over. The Brit went the distance twice with Arthur Abraham in his last two fights. This probably legitimized him as an opponent for Ward who did much better than Abraham. The American was on a different level and had an indecently easy time against his tough but over-matched foe. Ward exhibited his boxing talent and his speed allowed him to do whatever he pleased in the ring. There was a catch though, the catch weight clause.
