Cruiserweight Wars: Dorticos stops Kalenga

This week’s schedule is packed so tight with cruiserweight bouts that some good ones will probably be overlooked. Tonight’s card in Moscow which was supposed to be headlined by the heavyweight showdown between Deontay Wilder and Alexander Povetkin will go on with three cruiserweight bouts now headlined by Denis Lebedev. Beibut Shumenov will fight Junior Wright in Las Vegas with the WBA title at stake. There were two other interesting fights in the same weight class preceding the mainstream shows that deserve to be mentioned and were well worth watching.

Murat Gassiev’s vicious 1st round KO added to a night of knockouts for the PBC on FS1

Murat Gassiev’s vicious left hand ended FS1’s main event in spectacular fashion. Prior to the knockout punch, Jordan Shimmell turned Murat’s forehead bright red with jabs and left hooks. Gassiev missed his first right-handed attempt, but made the left hand count to close the show in style. Shimmell remained unconscious for a short time before showing he was okay as the crowd stood in relief. The punching power that trainer Abel Sanchez spoke of was evident with Tuesday night’s display from Gassiev.

(May 18, 2016) – Unbeaten cruiserweight contender Murat “Iron” Gassiev (23-0, 17 KOs) scored a sensational knockout victory over Jordan Shimmell (20-2, 16 KOs) in the main event of Premier Boxing Champions TOE-TO-TOE TUESDAYS on FS1 and BOXEO DE CAMPEONES on FOX Deportes Tuesday night from Black Bear Casino Resort in Carlton, MN in the Otter Creek Event Center.

Gassiev delivered a powerful left hook that put Shimmell out on the mat and halted the cruiserweight title elimination bout immediately at 2:54 of the first round. Shimmell was able to move effectively for much of the round and had landed an early combination that got the attention of Gassiev.

Manfredo, Jr. and Biosse Battle to a Draw

The former IBO middleweight titleholder, Peter ‘The Pride of Providence’ Manfredo, Jr.’s comeback fight after being out of the ring for three years, didn’t go as planned as he had settled for a eight round draw against Vladine Biosse in a good back and forth super middleweight bout. Manfredo, Jr. received one scorecard 78-74, Biosse the other 77-75, and the third was 76-76.

Lee Haskins retains IBF bantamweight crown with UD over Ivan Morales

Last night in Cardiff, Wales Lee Haskins retained his IBF bantamweight title for the first time with a comprehensive 12-round unanimous decision over once-beaten challenger Ivan Morales. Crafty and tricky southpaw counter puncher Haskins won by scores of 119-108 and 118-110, 118-110. Now 33-3(14) the 32-year-old will next face mandatory challenger and former foe Stuey Hall. Morales, younger brother off Mexican living legend Erik Morales, falls to 29-2(17).

The rising 154-pounder from Kazakhstan stopped his ninth straight opponent inside the distance when De Angel fell to the canvas twice in round six prompting referee Telis Assimenios to halt the bout 22 seconds into the round.
