Cotto: No Worries Ahead of Geale/Not Looking Past Him

WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto steps in against Australia’s former world champion Daniel Geale on Saturday in New York – and during media sessions has spoken to fighthype.com to suggest he is not bothered by the potential size and reach advantages Geale – a proper 160lb fighter – will possess come the night.

The fight is being held at a catchweight of 157lb and much has been made of rehydration, particularly by promoter Gary Shaw, who has suggested Geale could weigh as much as 175lb – light heavyweight – when he steps between the ropes to face the far smaller Puerto Rican.

Khan’s Litmus Test

(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) Amir Khan (31-3) unanimously outpointed Chris Algieri (20-2) on May 29 and his performance raised more questions than it answered. He won beyond any doubt but did not really dominate the slightly bigger New Yorker and came across as a fast but fragile contender with a power shortage. In fact his lackluster outing may have increased his chances of a big payday as he is obviously not a major threat to the key players at welterweight and he appears to be a low risk opponent for them regardless of the bold hype. Boxing without hard punches is aerobics.

Chris Algieri is perhaps at the peak of his career and he may have unwittingly accepted the position of a gatekeeper/measuring stick of the division after he went the distance with Pacquiao.

Sadly it was not to be once more for Dagenham lightweight Kevin Mitchell last night – but after a brave and spirited performance – and third crack at a world title – the affable Londoner is left wondering where he can next go from here, with opposing views as to the future of the East London fighter.

Mitchell and Linares were always going to be the most intriguing fight on the card for me due to each man’s high skill level and individual frailties – and the bout did not disappoint in terms of action and excitement.

It was a name bestowed him by Boxing News magazine in honour of his silky skills and defensive genius – and last night Lee Selby lived up to the name and more by comprehensively bashing up Evgeny Gradovich – the IBF fighter of the year – and ripping away his 126lb world title in London.

Sadly it was an accidental clash of heads in the 7th that ultimately led to the fight being halted a round later and the scorecards were called for after the ringside doctor ruled Gradovich would be unable to continue.

After his sizzling one sided performance over Frankie Gavin last night in London – both Kell Brook and his promoter Eddie Hearn have insisted once more that they are willing to face Amir Khan, yet while Hearn says pressure must be placed by the media on the Bolton man to force the fight – Brook says he isn’t going to hang around, preferring to chase other lucrative opportunities if Khan won’t step up.

At last night’s post fight presser, Hearn compared the two after Khan’s points win over Chris Algieri, insisting his fighter would end the American inside 3 rounds.

Johnson – who had been sold as having never been stopped – was expected to give Joshua at least a few rounds, promising he would deliver and be the Brit fighters biggest test to date. And on paper – he was.

Brook stops Gavin; Joshua beats Johnson; Selby wins; Linares defeats Mitchell

IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24 KOs) did what he had to do in destroying his opponent Frankie Gavin (22-2, 13 KOs) in six rounds on Saturday night in retaining his IBF 147lb title at the O2 Arena in London, UK. Brook landed a nice right hand that hurt Gavin. Brook then unloaded his artillery on Gavin until he slumped into the ropes.

Referee Steve Gray stopped the bout at that point without a count. The fight, if you want to call it that, was stopped at 2:51 of the 6th. Gavin was too hurt to continue. The referee would have done him a huge favor if he’d stopped the bout a couple of rounds earlier because this was never a fight to begin with.

Carl Froch : Brook Has Too Much For Gavin

After they both made weight ahead of their headlining clash tonight, Carl Froch – enjoying his new punditry role with Sky Sports – has offered his opinion on Kell Brook’s IBF title defence against Frankie Gavin – insisting that the Sheffield welterweight will have too much for the Birmingham man.

He said today at the weigh in that Brook “is a tough, tough kid” – something he knows first hand from sparring with him.

Froch is with the vast majority who think that Gavin – despite his fantastic amateur pedigree – will not have the power to trouble the champion and get his respect – despite his skills as a pure boxer.
