Australian super-featherweight, David Browne Jr, injured in a regional title fight in Ingleburn, NSW, last Friday evening, has tragically lost his fight for life after his family made the agonizing decision to turn off his life support machine on Tuesday.

Browne, 28, was knocked down by Filipino, Carlo Magali 30 seconds into the 12th and final round, and was initially treated by a doctor ringside, regaining consciousness before being taken to hospital in critical condition where he then slipped into a coma.

According to reports from those in attendance, he had been felled and then cleared to continue, with National Boxing Federation chief, John McDougall saying that Browne was eager to try and finish the fight after the knockdown.

“The doctor was seated below Davey’s corner and he obviously had no reservations in letting the fight continue,” Mr McDougall said.

“There was every indication that Davey would come out for the final round and outbox his opponent.”

“Regrettably we now know it’s easy in hindsight to say it shouldn’t have happened. In this case it’s a tragic passing of a young family man.”

“I just couldn’t say enough how much the industry feels for everyone connected, not leaving out his cornerman and trainer and the referee who I know how they’d be feeling at this stage. It’s just a tragic accident in sport,” Mr. McDougall added.

“On behalf of everybody connected in boxing nationwide, we offer our sympathies, our prayers, our thoughts to Davey’s wife and children.”

Browne’s passing is the second tragedy to hit Australian boxing in six months, following the passing of Braydon Smith, who also died after injuries he sustained following a fight last March.
