Danny Garcia – Not A Swift Route To Mayweather

The date was September 14th, 2013. On the undercard of the megafight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Saul Canelo Alvarez, a kingpin at Super Lightweight was decided. The contest pitted WBC, WBA, and Ring Magazine Champion, Danny Garcia against the relentless, argentine power puncher, Lucas Matthysse. When the final bell rang, Danny Garcia stood atop at the 140 pound division after scoring a close but clear unanimous decision over Lucas Matthysse.

In his March return bout, his first fight in Puerto Rico, against rugged contender Mauricio Herrera, Garcia won a majority decision, while most viewers of the fight scored the contest in the favor of Herrera. Most certainly Garcia’s most lackluster fight since he won the WBC title against Eric Morales in 2012.

Garcia finds himself between a rock and a hard place now. With the recent emergence of IBF welterweight titlist Shawn Porter, and welterweight contender Keith Thurman, Garcia may himself hard pressed with getting the win he needs to win the Mayweather Sweepstakes.

In hindsight, we must ask ourselves this question: Did Danny Garcia miss the taxi to take him to the MGM Grand for a fight with Floyd Mayweather in May? The answer to this query still may take some time to answer. Although his opponent for his August bout is still being discussed, whether it be a rematch with Herrera, a fight with IBF titlist Lamont Peterson, or a bout against newly crowned WBO titlist, Chris Algieri, Danny Garcia will have his hands full if he is to make it to apex of the boxing world, a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
