Golovkin-Rubio “Mexican Style” Kick Off

On October 18th at the StubHub Center in Carson California, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin makes his west coast debut against rugged veteran Marco Antonio Rubio. The Mexican is a serious underdog, yet he rides the momentum of a six fight winning streak and should draw love from the southern California crowd. While Golovkin, the German based Kazakhstan native, is yet to taste defeat as a professional prize fighter. This afternoon the two fighters and their teams met in downtown Los Angeles to officially announce their promotion, which is being dubbed “Mexican Style”.

Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions emceed the event and was clearly excited to be bringing his star middleweight to the LA area. “We’ve had a great response for bringing Gennady Golovkin here”, said Loeffler, “the presale at the StubHub Center has been the biggest we’ve ever had.” Sampson Lewkowicz, who represents Rubio, was very complimentary of K2 and their ability to make the negotiation process drama free. “K2 is A to Z one of the best promoters and easy to work with”, said Lewkowicz. He also promised Golovkin that he’d have his hands full ‘Mexican style’ and that this would be his toughest fight to date.

Will Cotto vacate his WBC title rather than fight Golovkin?

Will Cotto vacate his WBC title rather than fight Golovkin?

WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) could find himself in the position where he’ll be expected to face the winner of the October 18th fight between WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golokvin and Marco Antonio Rubio next year at some point if he wants to hold onto the WBC title.

Cotto will be taking a stay busy fight on December 13th against possibly Andy Lee. After that fight, Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will likely be meeting each other in May of 2015. Cotto reportedly intends on defending his WBC middleweight title against Canelo.

Golovkin with chance to become Cotto’s WBC mandatory if he beats Rubio

Since beating Sergio Martinez last June to capture his WBC middleweight title, Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) has shown little interest in fighting a unification match against WBA 160 pound champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs).

Well, Cotto may be soon forced to make a decision whether to fight Golovkin or vacate his WBC strap, because Golovkin’s will be fighting WBC interim middleweight champion Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) on October 18th, and if Golovkin beats him, he’ll become Cotto’s mandatory challenger, according to Steve Kim.

Loeffler sees Rubio as tough test for Golovkin

Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions believes that former two time world title challenger Marco Antoknio Rubio will be a tough test for his fighter WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) in their West Coast fight on October 18th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

The 34-year-old Rubio has twice fought for world titles and twice gone down to defeat to Kelly Pavlik and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Rubio has tried and failed in getting exposed by those two fighters.

A match-up between WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) and two-time world title challenger Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) for October 18th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, according to Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez.

Golovkin is looking to expand his presence to the West Coast, as he’s been fighting on the East Coast and in Monte Carlo in the last year. Fighting Rubio is one of getting the attention of boxing fans in California. Rubio is pretty much the next sacrificial lamb for Golovkin to slaughter.

It looks like WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) won’t be getting the big fight that he and his promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions were hoping for in his next fight in October.

WBC interim 160 pound champion Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) is saying that he’ll be fighting Golovokin next on October 18th.

“Since Miguel Cotto didn’t want to fight me, we’re fighting GGGboxing [Golovkin] October 18. I never back down from anyone. The battle is coming,” Rubio said.

Rubio has power but he’s not someone that will challenge Golovkin in any way. I rate Rubio below Curtis Stevens, a fighter that Golovkin recently stopped in 8 round.

Golovkin closing in on Chavez Jr on Froch’s Facebook poll

Golovkin closing in on Chavez Jr on Froch’s Facebook poll

On Tuesday, IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch asked boxing fans on his Facebook account to pick out who they would like to see him fight from these three fighters: Julio Cesar Chavez, James DeGale and Gennady Golovkin. Froch initially asked fans if they wanted to see him fight DeGale or Chavez Jr. But a couple hours later, Froch added Golovkin’s name to the list.

As you would guess, Chavez Jr jumped out to a huge lead over the other contestants. However, now a day later, Golovkin has narrowed Chavez Jr’s lead considerably and is within striking distance of taking the lead.
