Boxing 411: “Mayweather vs. Maidana” analysis with Jesse James Leija

YouTube video
Last week, Boxing 411 caught up with two time world champion and talented young fight promoter Jesse James Leija to analyze the upcoming super fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Marcos Maidana, which is slated to be broadcast on Showtime PPV on May3rd, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

The knowledgeable fight trainer and former world champion recognizes the gifts that both fighters will bring to the ring and examines the tumultuous fight style of “El Chino” Maidana versus the seemingly impervious defensive technique of “Money” Mayweather.

“I expect to see a great, great fight on May 3rd and a tough, tough fight for both fighters,” observes the budding young boxing promoter. “Mayweather brings intelligence, speed, and experience to the ring, and Maidana is so brutally tough that he’ll give you everything you can handle on fight night.”

Left-Hook Lounge Mailbag: Garcia/Herrera, Canelo's PPV numbers, Mayweather, Wilder, and more!!!

C. Jasper (Columbia, SC): I know you were pretty high on Danny Garcia after he soundly defeated Lucas Matthyssee. After seeing him struggle against a nobody, what do you think now?

Vivek W. (ESB): I’ll start by saying that I totally beg to differ, as it relates to your opinion of Mauricio Herrera being a “nobody”. Covering the sport over the years, I’ve always liked the art of keeping a thumb on those men and women who are under the radar, but above the rim, so to speak. Coming into this bout, I definitely viewed Herrera as someone who was not to be taken lightly. On the morning of all major fights, I post a Facebook “Scouting Report” which lays out my thoughts in general terms. I’m not always as deadly accurate as I’d like, but in hindsight, the words posted were almost ominous, as they spoke very clearly about what would later happen. To revisit the caption, here is a direct quote:

Hunter confident Khan will get Mayweather fight in the near future

Hunter confident Khan will get Mayweather fight in the near future

Amir Khan may have struck out in trying to land a big money fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. this time, but his trainer Virgil Hunter still sees Khan getting the fight with Mayweather in the near future. Hunter has been told by his contacts that Khan will be getting the fight against Mayweather at some point.

That’s probably true, especially if Khan faces Luis Collazo in his next fight on the undercard of Mayweather’s May 3rd fight against Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Collazo has been mentioned all week long as the guy Khan will be fighting next, and not Adrien Broner.

Mayweather-Maidana at MGM Grand on 5/3

Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) finally made up his mind today about where to stage his May 3rd fight against WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s). The fight will be staged at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The venue was a real no-brainer due to the absence of a state tax in Nevada. That’s why makes Nevada and other states like Texas and Washington ideal for boxing, because the fighters don’t take a second hit on their taxes after having a huge chunk taken out on the federal taxes.

Having the fight staged in New York instead of Las Vegas would have taken a huge chunk out of Mayweather’s winning, and that obviously is something that he wasn’t too keen on taking place. The only way it would have been worth it for Mayweather to fight at the Barclays Center would be if they sweetened the pot by giving Mayweather extra cash to cover what he’d be losing from the state tax money taken from his purse.

Amir Khan still wants shot at Mayweather, says he’ll KO Broner!

While former 140-pound king Amir Khan is still getting used to the frustrating fact that superstar Floyd Mayweather Junior will not be giving him a shot at his titles in his next fight (and in fact just jerked Khan around wasting his time, this despite the fact that Khan actually won the Twitter poll: ‘who should I fight: Khan or Maidana,’ that Mayweather set up so as to “let the fans decide,”) the 27-year-old has not given up complete hope of one day challenging the unbeaten master.

Taking to his Twitter account to address a number of issues, Khan today also spoke about who he may fight next. Khan first refuted the fact that British rival Kell Brook and his team have not offered him the $5 million that has been widely reported:
