Carl Frampton: Still Keen On Quigg Fight / Believes He Is The ‘A’ Side

One of the most sought after fights for the fans, especially in the UK, is the clash between Northern Ireland’s IBF super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton and Bury native and WBA (reg) 122 lb champion Scott Quigg.

Both men go into battle separately this weekend, defending their respective world titles – Quigg fights former Frampton foe Kiko Martinez in Manchester, while Frampton heads to the US for the first time to fight Mexican Alejandro Gonzalez Jr in El Paso, Texas on a PBC on CBS card (ITV in UK).

IBF super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton will be looking to impress on American soil in 9 days time when he defends his title against Mexico’s Alejandro Gonzalez Jr in Texas, in what will be both his first fight in the US as well his debut under new advisor Al Haymon and the Premier Boxing Champions brand.

Frampton has been one of British boxing’s best for a while now and was sizzling last time out in February stopping brash American challenger Chris Avalos inside 5 rounds in his home city of Belfast.

In a good piece of news for UK fight fans, Carl Frampton’s 2nd defence of his IBF super bantamweight title against Mexico’s Alejandro Gonzalez Jr – that is to take place in El Paso, Texas on July 18th – is to be screened on terrestrial television, with ITV confirming they are to broadcast the bout. It will be screened prime time, starting at 9:45 pm (BST)

The channel, which has a historic association to the sport in the country, made a hugely successful return to it with Frampton’s sizzling maiden defence against brash American challenger Chris Avalos back in February. An audience of over 2 million viewers tuned in.

Scott Quigg Still Believes Frampton Fight Can Happen

On July 18th WBA (reg) 122 lb champion Scott Quigg goes into what will be a fight for comparative purposes when he takes on Spain’s Kiko Martinez in Manchester.

Bitter rival Carl Frampton boxed and beat Martinez twice – the first time in 2013 by 9th round stoppage and then again 18 months later by unanimous decision, to take the IBF 122 lb strap the Northern Irishman currently owns.

Negotiations for a fight between the two Brits recently broke down, with Frampton going on to sign with seemingly omnipotent ‘advisor’ Al Haymon – “The Jackal” is now set to face Alejandro Gonzalez Jr in Texas on the same July 18th date Quigg fights.

After inking his deal with Al Haymon recently, the expected announcement that IBF 122lb champion Carl Frampton would soon appear on the Premier Boxing Champions brand has arrived, with the Tiger’s Bay man fighting Alejandro Gonzalez Jr in El Paso, Texas on July 18th in the 2nd defence of his title.

Not too much is known about Frampton’s Mexican opponent, who at 22 years of age, has only boxed outside of Mexico the once – yet he will be looking to emulate his father, Alejandro ‘La Cobrita’ Gonzalez who pulled off a similar feat in 1995, when he stunned a then undefeated Kevin Kelley to take the WBC featherweight strap when he was just 21 years old – also in Texas.

Very interesting news that came out of the UK last night following this tweet from IBF 122lb champion Carl Frampton.

“My team and I have teamed up with the most powerful man in boxing, Al Haymon.”

Immediately, all the nay-sayers on social media rejoicing that the Tiger’s Bay man had rid himself of former featherweight legend Barry McGuigan – who they believe the responsible party for negotiations with Eddie Hearn and Scott Quigg turning sour – were silenced, when it was announced McGuigan was staying on as manager.

For anybody still doubting the method in the supposed “madness” of Carl Frampton turning down a very public £1.5 million to fight Scott Quigg in Manchester later this year, the Tiger Bay fighters exclusive column for “The Belfast Newsletter” should go some way to making things clearer.

Calling the antics by Quigg and Matchroom on Tuesday “The biggest stunt I’ve seen since Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson at the Superbowl” Frampton went on to detail his dissatisfaction at not just the very public manner in which his rivals conducted their business, but the actual offer itself.
