I see Good

I was a Cherrypicker fan believe it or NOT.. Till about 8 years ago I notice Cherrypicker only fights guys he can BEAT. Avoided greats in their prime. It took a while but I FINALLY woke up. Pacman rings a bell Cotto in his prime also… Yes floyds good but fighting bums and old shop worn fighters will make anybody look good

The Voice of Boxing

Te Tumbo, I agree with you. In the early days supporting boxing was a way to express support for our people and to help get one of us up in the money making business. Other minorities also supported their own big time, e.g. Italians, Irish, Jews etc but even that type of support is not like the old days.
I give Monet credit for developing his persona to draw fans. He is not genuinely popular like Oscar or Sugar Ray. He is more like Ali in the early days when he was hated and despised (later he was loved) and a bit like Tryson who was liked for his ko power but hated for how bad people felt he was.
I will admit I was a huge Floyd as much as Super Roy but the way he behaves now has turned me off. The way he refuses to face certain guys and the insults etc. I understand the persona but not all of it is persona. He is an angry and jealous man. He was jealous of Oscar and Manny because I know and he knows that he was a better, more polished star than both but Oscar was golden and Manny initially had his Pinoy followers but later crossed over in the US, Floyd’s home. I am sure he came back for that reason.

The Voice of Boxing

Tark, I forgot to add that you must have only started folowing boxing lately if you say that Roy ducked Tarver. Tarver was never at the top to face Roy. G back and chek the top 168 and 175 guys that Roy did not meet and you will see he ducked, avoided or refused to meet them, take your pick; the same as Floyd. Stop the nonsense about losses. Juan Guzman is undefeated and so are many boxers today whereas boxers in the past had many losses but that did not stop them from being great.
You newcomers to boxing place too much emphasis on no losses and do not understand that if you face the best regularly, you will win and lose some. Cherry pickers never lose but they never realize their full potential either. Jones is losing to guys now that could not carry his jock strap. Facing Canelo wiho is unbeaten means nothing because a real fan knows he has a huge following like Hatton, but is not in Floyd’s league.

The Voice of Boxing

Tark as an official Floyd Spokesman, you have responded just as you were programmed. Floyd retired twice when the welters were the hottest division and did not face the best. After his 1st retirement he came back and fought Hatton, the same Hatton who barely survized against Collazo in his 1st welter fight. Aftre that fight he said he was going back to 140 as 147 was too tough and strong.
After his 2nd retirement he came back and fought Marquez, a man who had only fought once at 135. He agreed to a catchweight but did not come in at the required weight. He said Marquez challenged him and idiots like me said, yes he did, but so di Margarito and all the other top welters but he chose a guy who career was a 126-130 fighter and you have the nerve to defend him.
The whole world wanted to see him face the murederous row at welter but he made every excuse. Speaking of excuses, he criticized Manny about catchweights and wanting to face guys at their best but he refused to face Canelo at his best weight. I won’t harbor on facing JMM at a cheating weight since he did not meet the agreed weight. I will instead go on to the fact the world demanded he face Manny and he made every excuse including accusing him of PEDS. What about the Thomas Hauser and Steve Kim articles on his failed tests? People in glass houses should not throw stones you know. He only wants tests done by USADA with whom he has a treaty eh?
You Floydbots will defend him like and addict defends his last cigarette and refuse to listen to facts. Floyd was great fighter at 130 and 135 but failed to face the best above those weights to cement his legacy. He is just like Roy Jones who also had the most potential and cboth coud have been ATG top 5 if they had cleaned out the top names. Instead they both took matches that the world knew they would win with one hand tied behind their backs. I was a huge fan of both but was disappointed they did not make my ATG top 25 due to failure to test themselves against the best.

The Voice of Boxing…. You’re an idiot… Floyd has faced the best possible opponents and Alvarez is far and away his best possible opponent right now.. It he wasn’t Floyd would be facing Matthysse or whoever the fans and pundits designated at the best.. You sound like one of those crazies who think he should have fought Cheato after Cheato lost to Williams.. Or fought Williams after Williams lost to Quintana … even though those boys never beat anyone good like Mosley or De La Hoya.

You have to fight the best opponent at the moment.. If they lose a fight when their chance is coming up they’re screwed.. All these guys have lost a lot … and Floyd has won a lot.. Pacquiao has 5 losses.

Canelo??? ZERO LOSSES.

Pacquiao has proven he his not the best.. He lost 2 in a row to people who could not in any way challenge Floyd.. But if he manages to finally win a fight vs Rios the fight with Floyd will be made in China… You heard it here 1st.

The only fighter Roy Jones Jr ever really ducked was Antonio Tarver.. AT beat the crap out of Roy and then flattened Roy in 2 rounds the next time.. Then he beat Roy up again to make it a clean sweep 3-0.. In between all those fights Glen Johnson introduced Roy to the canvas for a 10 minute nap.. It pays to duck those heavy hitters who can put your lights out for the night.. Floyd doesn’t have to worry too much about that because he’s the greatest defender ever.

You 3 guys are haters… Worse than that you’re idiots… Floyd has the world’s biggest fan base and other fighters need Floyd to get rich… That’s why Pacquiao is willing to take so much less money than Floyd to fight him… That fight will get done if Pacquiao actually beats somebody for a change… To fight the P4P best you actually have to beat somebody.

Floyd has no real fanbase..he pretty much makes his money off the opponents fans, haters and others who just want to be part of an event or just those who want to witness Floyd take his firt L live..oh yeah and you also have the Mayweather fanboys around here who also suffer the same insecurities their idol do and it pisses them off if you don’t praise Floyd the way they do.

Posted June 29, 2013 7:06 pm

Canelo is as technical as you can get… Trout was bigger, taller southpaw, with a longer reach, and has the style of a pure technical boxer.. In fact, Trout outboxed everyone on the road to becoming an undefeated World Super Welterweight Champion..

Canelo decided to outbox the master boxer… He was prepping for Floyd.

2. Please explain what you mean by “technical.”

TJ you wrote.., “I WATCHED THE FIRST 6 rounds of ALVAREZ and TROUT again last night and bot men on that performance would be soundly thrashed by Floyd”

That makes NO SENSE TJ.. Floyd NEVER fought young guys of this caliber. Floyd himself said, “Cotto is the toughest fighter I ever fought.”

Canelo is a lot shorter than Trout—but Saul boxed AT from long range. This gave Trout the style advantage but helped Canelo sharpen up his boxing skills ahead of a Floyd fight. Brilliant thinking by a 22-year-old.

Floyd is a lot taller than Cotto—but at times fought him in an area about the size of a phone booth. I assume Floyd was looking toward a Canelo fight and needed some close quarters action against a good hitter—even though Floyd took harder hits from Cotto than Canelo took against the younger, bigger, faster, more skillful, 171-pound, undefeated World Champion, Austin Trout.

Posted June 29, 2013 3:46 pm

TJ…, “We are talking at least 25-30 years ago when it was common knowledge that most sports stars were on the verge of retirement once they passed the age of 30”

That is YOUR knowledge TJ.. Which is faulty to the point of being nonsense.

The age of 30 as ALWAYS been prime-time for athletes… A time when a blend of youth and experience mold into stunning performances..

Bill Russell… Wilt Chamberlain… Willie Mays… Hank Aarron… Sugar Ray Robinson… Max Schmeling… Eder Jofre… Babe Ruth… Bart Star… John Havlecheck… Johnny Unitas… Archie Moore… and most of the greatest athletes in history were NOT sliding into retirement at that age, but giving some of their greatest performances of their careers for years to come.

I’ll give you a clue TJ… Human evolution takes longer than a generation to make staggering progressions in life extension and athletic brilliance. You don’t need to be a biophysicist to understand this.

Posted June 29, 2013 11:27 am

Douglas didn’t expose Tyson. He took the aura of invincibility. Tyson was poorly trained, his corner sucked and was very ill prepared and Douglas fought the fight of his life. Plain and simple. Before Tyson went to jail a fight vs Holyfield would of beenuch more competitive with no ear biting. After, Tyson was a shell of himself

Posted June 29, 2013 10:21 am

You need to stop going on about MARVELOUS being only 32/33 when he started to decline or SRL being 34 when he lost to NORRIS ….

We are talking at least 25-30 years ago when it was common knowledge that most sports stars were on the verge of retirement once they passed the age of 30 (in most sports, too)….

It is only in the last so many years and with the help of sports science and better training methods (allegedly), foods, supplements, knowledge of the human body etc,… that we are all younger at heart, living longer and a 40 year old average guy really is in a far better condition than his counterpart was in the 80’s and 90’s,,,,

Times move on and generations improve, get wiser, stronger, live longer etc……

Your comparison doesn’t hold any water!

Posted June 29, 2013 9:15 am

Did this clown just suggest Ortiz is as good as Alvarez? LOL. Alvarez is twice the fighter the weak minded Ortiz is.

There is little between Alvarez and Mayweather physically (excluding a few pounds, I think Floyd actually has the physical advantanges) and Mayweather is faster and more experienced. It seems clear therefore that he wins this one.

Largo…, Duran was the smaller man… Yet his 2nd round left hook intimidated Leonard and set the tone for the fight.. Leonard didn’t find a way to beat Hearns. Tommy handed Ray the fight by coming in weak, underweight, and dehydrated—to the point he couldn’t go 15 rounds.. He flat ran out of gas … Leonard was only 34 for Norris—and a huge favorite.

My point is that Leonard didn’t take chances with his meanness.. Floyd stuck his head into the Lion’s mouth in the Mosley fight—trading shots when he was badly rocked and staggered moments before.. Floyd was a good judge of character.. Mosley backed off—similar to his fight with Vernon Forrest.

Forrest.., “After I hurt Mosley the fight was mine. His main focus was defense.”

I got hooked on boxing when I was about 5 or 6 years old. I was fortunate to have a Grandfather who was a big boxing fan. I didn’t get to watch any fights with him, but he had boxing books that struck my interest (probably because there was nothing else to do but look at books when I visited). In addition to that he would tell me about fighters and who he felt the best were. At the time it was Ali, but he told me all about Robinson, Marciano, Louis, and Johnson, as well as many others…. In any case, I was a big Ali fan, but I really got hooked watching the 1976 Olympics… Leonard was my favorite, out of a strong group of American fighters. His combinations were blazing fast. I followed his career as much as possible, he was a damn good fighter, and one of my all time favorites. Mayweather, doesn’t Leonard’s combination punching, but he’s better in a lot of other areas. He is smaller though, and really he’s peaked out at 147.
But for all the hate the Mayweather’s receive, Floyd Sr. and Roger, passed along what they knew, and came up with one of the best. That doesn’t happen, at that level too often in boxing.

Posted June 29, 2013 3:20 am

Floyd, all day! Canelo dosent have the skills to hang with Floyd. Only in a Floyd fight will you see big fans and lots of money!

Posted June 29, 2013 3:02 am

I agree about Roy. He was just faster. Those fighters you mentioned where even graceful when the slowed. Roy isn’t and it just showed that his major asset was his speed. Good post. I actually fell in love with boxing watching Tyson

Posted June 29, 2013 2:56 am

Notice that I don’t include Roy Jones in that group, even though I love Roy. I think his athleticism was unique in the whole history of boxing but he wasn’t as refined as those guys…he was faster.

Posted June 29, 2013 2:22 am

That said, I think Floyd is the more graceful, polished fighter since Leonard.

Posted June 29, 2013 2:11 am

Oscar was a very good fighter, HOFer for sure but he didn’t have that grace, the effortless movement, the fluidity; he was stiffer, mechanical…Floyd has the fluid moves but for some reason-maybe because I watched them live-I find a young Ali & Leonard more pleasant to watch.

Posted June 29, 2013 2:06 am

The first fighter I watched with that fluidity & beauty in motion was Ali. I was very young then & I watched it with my father & his loud friends…I fell in love with boxing right there& then.

Whether or not it was Floyd fans, or haters or whether it was Canelos fans that sold this fight out. Fact is its sold out and did record numbers at the gate and will probably do record numbers for PPV and Floyd has sold record numbers in PPVs not to mention the most PPV sells ever was done with Floyd apart of it. So hate all you want, Floyd is apart of it all

The guy that said that Floyd has a longer reach must be mentally ill. This is not rocket science; watch the picture on this thread, from the shoulder to the fingers, Canelo is clearly at least 3 inches longer & he’s a lot thicker…Canelo is the bigger man.

Posted June 29, 2013 1:47 am

TARK, you might be right about Leonard but he was far away from his prime when Norris beat his a$s, against Duran, he was fighting fire with fire & he played right into Duran’s game. Duran was too experienced for him but he never showed quit in him & the fight could’ve gone either way. Hearns was out-jabbing him, plain & simple-Hearns had a HW reach & was a very good boxer-puncher but Leonard found a way…the “you’re blowing it son” is way over-rated like was Dundee. To me, Dundee was a glorified cheerleader. Leonard was one of the most fluid fighters I’ve ever seen-I saw him live- beautiful to watch, a genuine ATG & yes, he was a mean SOB…

FMJ probably walks around at 158-160…………
Red probably walks at 168-170.
Canelo is soooooooooo big this is sure to be a mismatch.
Ohhhh Canelo is so big and Little Floydy is so small, poor little Floydy.

Pure Bull Roar…..When these two are in the center of the Ring with the Ref
you will see that Floyd ain’t so small. He is taller and has the longer reach.
And when you have a good jab and the longer reach and the speed,.. duh, what happens.
You geniuses out there should be able to figure that out. I do not care what tark says, when these two are in the ring they will look evenly matched and taller Floyd has the edge. The main edge that Canelo has is his age. ……………….

Posted June 29, 2013 12:15 am

Largo…, Floyd’s mean streak is a lot more pronounced than Leonard’s ever was.. When Terrry Norris started beating Leonard up, Ray got more and more reluctant to throw.. Norris started rolling in the rounds with ease … and Leonard went into total defense posture..

When lightweight Robert Duran fought Leonard he nailed Ray with a beautiful left hook in the 2nd round.. Leonard when into retreat and lost the next couple rounds.. When Ray finally tried to come back he was too far behind — so he more or less blew the fight when he got tagged.

When Hearns was popping Leonard all over the place Leonard almost went to sleep… He had no reply.. Dundee said, “Ray, don’t go to sleep on me… You’re blowing it son. You’re blowing it..” When super skinny Hearns, who came in underweight for the fight, ran his gas tank out completely — that’s when Leonard finally attacked him like a wounded wolf.. Hearns could barely lift an arm … and that’s when the mean streak in Leonard revved into super heated overdrive..

You don’t have to be at death’s door for Floyd to get mean.

Floyd, like Leonard, has a mean streak in him & that was more evident against Shane; he got rocked badly by a Mosley bomb-or two-& he just shook his head & came back firing in all cylinders, ripping hard shots, body & head, & that took all the fight outta Shane…I have the feeling that Canelo offense will bring that mean streak out in Floyd; this fight might end up with somebody being knocked TFO, either way…I’m excited about this fight…oh, yeah.

Toosalty…, You know nothing about Boxing.. I have many times as much experience in the game as you.. Saying Canelo was tired and red faced by round 4 is idiotic and shows your lack of knowledge. Get tired at the world-class level of the game, less than a 3rd of the way through a World Championship unification fight, and you’re in for a beating. It’s a fact. When George Foreman ran out of gas vs Ali and Young — he was done… Sugar Ray Robinson was stopped by a feather puncher when he got tired.

If Saul were flagging as early as the 4th round, and that circumstance happens a lot in Boxing, an experienced and undefeated World Champion of Trout’s caliber would have no trouble stepping up the pace, throwing more punches, beating Alvarez up, significantly marking him up, and probably getting him out.. Canelo emerged without a scratch.

Trout beat Floyd’s self proclaimed toughest opponent easily. He marked him up, put pressure on him, and landed good shots throughout.. Trout is no Juanma Lopez, Paulie Malignaggi, Victor Ortiz, Yuri Foreman, Felix Sturm, or other low grade Champion. If a boxer the caliber of Trout knows he’s behind on points in the most important fight of his life, and he senses you’re tired? … guess what? He’s going to start ripping you.

Indeed Peej I have my analysis and scoring on here below, don’t wanna get to redundant lol. I’m most likely going Floyds way but I’m waiting to see what Canelo looks like at the weigh in. I think if he rehydrates into the 170s again all the better for Floyd. Alvarez going to need to come in around 160-163 I think to be able to move with Floyd. Still have to take into account Floyds a little slower and reflexs are off a bit at 154. Gonna enjoy this one live tho first time for me since the hatton fight.

PEEJ, if Canelo fight against Floyd, taking those long breaks in rounds, a master like Jr. will pick him apart & he’ll put his left hook to the body to work overtime; I also think he’d take him out with body shots, mainly; Now, if Canelo fights an energetic fight then all bets are off …

Posted June 28, 2013 11:03 pm

It will be a slow fight! Mayweather gives the hardcore fans something to cheer about how he duck, slip, dance and block Canelos slow motion power punch. Canelo has a low stamina and will tire out easily. Floyd will jab his way to a UD! Styles makes fight and what ever or who ever you put in front of Floyd, you will get a boring fight!

Posted June 28, 2013 11:01 pm

Oh yeah. I got Floyd by late round stoppage. Canelos stamina will cost him. If he doesn’t have the stamina now he won’t never have it. Plus seeing Jose Cotto briefly hurt Canelo just can’t slip my mind. Plus I had Trout winning by a round so I know he can be out boxed

Posted June 28, 2013 10:22 pm

Genaro Hernandez was a master boxer but Floyd was way too fast & accurate for him. Corrales was undefeated & a true monster puncher but Floyd’s young, super-fast legs kept him away from danger & he beat the crap outta him. Castillo was a Chavez-like pressure fighter with good power & limitless stamina & gave Floyd prolly his most difficult fight ever…Ricky Hatton was also a pressure brawler but Floyd was just too fast-legs & hands-& too skillful for him. Judah was good-as always-for a few rounds…Oscar Hoya gave a good account of himself but Floyd mastery prevailed once more. Marquez wasn’t at his best & Floyd just played with him like a cat with a mouse. Mosley gave Floyd his biggest scare in round2 but Floyd showed his mean face & came quickly back to beat him down…Ortiz was/is a head-case that Floyd was dominating before the head-butt/KO fiasco. Cotto a future HOFer connected more than usual against a flat-footed Floyd but Floyd was about to decapitate him in the later rounds…Canelo has a more complete set of skills, together, than any of the guys mentioned-except Marquez-: he’s-unlike Ortiz-a mentally balanced kid & his power is distributed equally left/right; he keeps a centered point of gravity which keeps him balanced to punch left/right with less effort. He punches in fast combinations with power & he doesn’t neglect defense while attacking. The only problem I see, & this is a major problem against a master like Floyd, it’s his stamina; he goes for way too long stretches of time, without punching looking depleted…Canelo looks to me, on paper at least, the most formidable opponent Floyd has faced-about to face- & at his age, this should easily be a 50/50 fight…

Yeah i was starting to like Broner after he beat the lineal lw champ those are the fights i like but not only did the post fight stuff turn me off but throwing the kick also. I really don’t like that y’all know im no Floyd fan but i always said i was glad he cracked Ortiz for that headbutt. No room in the sport for that.

Lol REM Never been a paulie fan either, but broner starting to rub me off as well

Posted June 28, 2013 9:56 pm

Can’t argue that sentiment Peej. As I said I can see it going to Broner, just not by a wide margin. I think paulie did land a fair amount of punches gave the fight a couple viewings as usual just wasn’t enough from Broner for me. It’s all good I’m all for agreeing to disagree. As far as his behavior after the fight I agree very ridiculous. You got a call for the Floyd/ Canelo bout yet? I’m spending my damn vacation there all week. Gotta love having kids on your tax returns lol

Posted June 28, 2013 9:54 pm

I like Kellermans way of deciding who won who would you rather have been. No way would i rather have been Paulie.

Posted June 28, 2013 9:54 pm

I don’t compare Broner to Floyd. He is not even close. And I agree his showing at 147 was not great but in my opinion he clearly won. It was a close fight but I had Broner clearly winning. I really like Paulie and am a fan that is why I didn’t pick a winner I was just hoping for a good fight. Throwing punches and landing punches are 2 different things and throwing nothing but body punches will not win you a fight especially if you are clearly not even hurting the opponent. With that said I was very disappointed in Broners post fight interview. Turned me off a bit. Once the final bell rings regardless on if you like your opponent you show respect and that didn’t happen. That’s one of the reasons why I love boxing.

Posted June 28, 2013 9:42 pm

REM..just didn’t see it. Paulie 1-4 Broner 5-8, 10. Paulie 11,12. Hand Broner landed as effectively as Canelo sure. But he didn’t. The footwork was just awful as well. Peej taking the title from the champion is just a mindset. Of course its not in the “rulebook”. Come on man. I kno were both mayweather fans, but broner is a different story. Id rather see him at 140 personally. Just didn’t look like himself at 147.

Te Tumbo my friend, I am always aware of who boxing fans follow, and why they follow them. Just as I am well educated on the Legendary Manny Pacquiao, I have even more knowledge of the great Country of Mexcio, and its outstanding boxing history. Salvador Sanchez, Raton Macias, Rafael Herrera, Bazooka Limon, Guty Espadas and Jose “Pipino Cuevas just to name a few. They have been some of my favorites. You see, a true boxing fan fan finds a way to educate himself. I know 100% why Canelo is followed the way he is. I have mentioned those reasons in one of my prior comments. And I have had the privileged to see many of these greats train live in front of their fans.

Posted June 28, 2013 9:11 pm

come to think of it… Canelo vs GGG is going to be fun…

Posted June 28, 2013 9:09 pm

May86 i gave Paulie 3of the 1st 4 due to Broners lack of activity but he swept the middle rounds by picking up the pace with the powershots. Paulie saved energy and took 1 or 2 late rounds but only when Broner allowed him to. The fights were similar in a broader sense that it was a close fight between the workrate and the clean hard potshots. The fighters that provided the workrate didn’t bring enough pop. In that sense the fights mirror each other.

Posted June 28, 2013 9:02 pm

I hate when people think you have to take the belt away from a titlest. The fight is scored in rounds. If its close but the challenger wins then he wins plain and simple. No were in the rules does it say the challenger has to do a lot more to win a title.

Posted June 28, 2013 9:01 pm

Tomato Can

Canelo is a natural “Big” 154 pounder, he’s not slow and he has pretty good skill. Mayweather is going to need remain on the defense and counter punch until he see’s Canelo tiring, at that point he can open up. If he does so before that he could be in for a rude awakening.

Posted June 28, 2013 9:01 pm

Te tumbo great analysis i agree except that i think Canelo is stronger than ODH. I think Canelo is gonna use his size well with his other tools over the course of the fight. Don’t get me wrong im not giving Canelo the edge but I wont be surprised if Canelo lands the shots he needs to land that will make his size count.

respect for FMJ taking the risky fight, i see Canelo walking out with his first defeat.

FMJ via Close Split decision

then there will be a rematch if the PPV buys for this fight exceeds what is expected… let’s call it “business” not “fixed”

FMJ will pot shot the kid, but Canelo will push and push hard (hope so…) Canelo must keep his cool, patience is the key, a lot of it. He must train and be ready for 50 rounds, he tends to slow down his pace in the later rounds, if so, he can’t catch up with the speedy and slick FMJ.

i don’t favor Floyd to win an exciting bout. in fact, i’m anticipating a lot of booing and hissing once he begins to apply the excellent grappling skills that neutralized DLH. Floyd is strong for his size, which is why i don’t believe that swarming him with offense is the most effective strategy. he’ll simply clinch, grapple, counter, and pot-shot with monotonous regularity until the final bell. Canelo will need to engineer a unique fight-plan to prevail over the multi-talented Mayweather but it’s Mayweather’s deep experience that will be the biggest challenge for Canelo to overcome. Floyd’s seen it all and can adapt to anything he hasn’t encountered. Canelo does possess poise and ring-smarts of his own but few if any fighters are ring-smarter than Floyd. in fact, only the likes of Ward can compare and guess what? Ward is also criticized for being a “boring” fighter. fortunately, i can appreciate “boring” and undefeated fighters for what they are: smart, disciplined, and ingenious ring-technicians who Know how to Win, which is what they prepare for and all they care about.

Posted June 28, 2013 8:01 pm

Well Broner clearly won the fight just wasn’t as impressive as Kahn or Hatton 2 fighters he’s projected to be better than but Trout as well as he fought didn’t win and is not by worldclass standards a slick boxer. Canelo won for the same reasons Broner did beautiful movement on defense and clean hard punches. Trouts a good athlete but hardly a master boxer Canelos significantly closer to a master boxer than Trout. That’s why with his ridiculous size advantage Floyds gonna be on the run for his life. Floyd can fight the perfect fight and win but hes gonna be on red alert every second like never before. Floyds more likely to hurt his hand before hurting Canelo so his offense won’t keep Canelo at bay.

“Titopa, you’re right with your thoughts on Canelo’s fans. He has so many of them from Mexico” and HECDOG, YOU would know this because of your recent travels through Mexico? or because of the numerous conversations and interviews you conducted with fight-fans and family in Mexico? or maybe it’s because Canelo has been proclaimed a national icon by Mexican leadership? or because Canelo’s homecoming after defeating Trout was greeted with a parade and national holiday? in fact, NONE of these things are true, are they? you seem to be trying to justify your own irrational zealotry by projecting it onto Canelo’s fanbase. IMO, you have minimal if not ZERO personal knowledge of Mexico or Mexican fight-fans. even mine is limited but i am at least personally aware of what sports my numerous family members in Mexico follow.

TITOPA, i think that perhaps it is your famiy/friends that fit the profile of Mexicans blindly clinging to any and every great Mexican hope. otherwise, my familia is from Guadalajara and several towns thereabouts and they’re generally oblivious to Canelo and Boxing. futbol and only futbol is the sport that gets them fired-up. back here in L.A., the majority of my camaradas “know” that Mayweather is gonna win but are rooting for Canelo to provide a legitimate challenge. NObody is touting the tested but unproven Canelo as the next Chavez or DLH. Btw, i can recall when Haters were attributing DLH’s success to him being “white”. nowadays DLH looks like a Yaqui indian standing next to Canelo who has apparently become the new standard of Mexican success due to “whiteness”.

Why would Oscar end his cash cows winning streak so soon?

Posted June 28, 2013 7:27 pm

Titopa, you’re right with your thoughts on Canelo’s fans. He has so many of them from Mexico, and deservingly so. Mexico has had some of the greatest FIGHTERS ever. Chavez, Zarate, Olivares, Castillo, Herrera, Morales, Barrera and many more. Mexico is a country of warriors that put it all on the line. Canelo has showed me some good boxing skills, and not a lot of inside rough house fighting, but maybe he has it in him. We’ll find out on September 14th. Most of Canelo’s fans cheer him on more emotionally rather than rationally. They fight right along with him. They are passionate fans that live and die with their fighters. Great to see an entire country stand side by side with their boxing hero, and if they could, they would also be wearing gloves.

Mexican fans got to much hope for canelo, Hes not gonna beat floyd then the fans will have a excuse the rest of the other fights floyd won.

Posted June 28, 2013 7:11 pm

Floyd will be the smaller guy but he will also be the smartest guy in the ring. He will not allow this giant to land many power shots, Cotto was a wake up call, so he will drag this kid into 12 rds and win UD…..END OF STORY…..FEEL THE STEEL….

Posted June 28, 2013 7:09 pm

The Mexican public has a new guy to root for, and that’s GREAT! But some of their “predictions” and accusations of Floyd only help prove that they don’t know BOXING.

Posted June 28, 2013 7:03 pm

hecdog – I’ve read things like “Canelo hits too hard, he’s gonna knock Mayweather out in 4 rounds”, “Mayweather has never fought a real Mexican”, “Mayweather is scared”, “Canelo is the best” and all this stuff….it get WORSE! But that’s what I hear/read, they don’t know “boxing”, they know Canelo and they saw what he did against over-matched opponents, and they think he’s the best based on those fights.

Posted June 28, 2013 7:02 pm

Toosalty to me thats like saying Canelos white odviously but has native blood too that was my point anyway back to boxing.

Posted June 28, 2013 7:02 pm

hecdog – I’m Mexican/American, and I don’t think Canelo has JUST “boxing fans”, he has Mexican fans, people who’ll root for him to beat ANYONE, I remember my father mentioning Canelo’s name when he was this little guy beating up on tomato cans in Guadalajara, his family has a ranch just a few miles from my aunt. Even then they were saying things like “he’s ready for Pacquiao”, they had NO clue, all they cared as that they had a new HERO, a new young guy to cheer and root for, that’s awesome! But most (if not all) of his fans aren’t true boxing fans, they’re Canelo fans.

Te tumbo i dont want to get into it but i say that because the Spaniards are part of us to and they colonized in the Philippines. That connects us to Asia.

Rigo speak spanish but he is blk cmon, I understand Ninto is not but the point is usually when you put a supposed to be good fighter I.e ninito in with a good slick blk boxer they lose. Rigo is from Cuba but he is blk.

Posted June 28, 2013 6:57 pm

I’m not changing my tune if Floyd wins. I’m thinking he should win vs a Canelo that ha no experience fighting top guys. He still has a way to go. This is only an opportunity for Canelo to learn and improve, but if he were to win, Floyd would be looked at as a failure. All I’m saying is Canelo is the draw here for many reasons I mentioned. Most boxing fans love Canelo, and they’re showing it by clamoring and raving for him. Canelo is bringing th excitement to the tour and the fight. Mayweather doesn’t have many fans even in his own home town while Canelo is being treated like Elvis and the Beatles.

Posted June 28, 2013 6:53 pm

Sorry, but I agree that Ortiz’s hands are faster, not so sure about his stamina, but he did engage in an all out war vs Berto and didn’t fade one bit, on the contrary, he knocked Berto down at a moment when Ortiz seemed out of it. But Canelo IS better.

Posted June 28, 2013 6:52 pm

Bottom line, Mayweather too smart, he is gonna make Canelo work and then take the young Lion into the deep. Mayweather by way of MD.

Posted June 28, 2013 6:51 pm

“Again its the Sweet Science but you wouldnt know nothing about that. ” TooSalty, Tark can speak for himself and I’m sure he will, but I think he’s trained and personally known more professional boxers than you can only name.

Btw, i think that there is already overlap between Mayweather and Canelo’s fanbase. if only because of Mayweather’s established tradition of reserving his biggest fights for Mexican holidays. because of the built-in fight-fanbase for these occassions, Floyd dials back his most offensive rhetoric, and simply prepares like the consummate boxing professional he is. that goes a long way among Canelo’s fanbase.

To the The Voice of Boxing, change your name. Dude listen most of Floyd fans dnt watch boxing as the blk community once did, as with whites etc You there is NFL,College Football BBall the list goes on, not just boxing. The Mexicans watch/support their fighter more than any other group so what. Either you love or hate FM but you still watch as he is undeated against ALL hispanics. So you are watching hoping that he lose. The truth is most boxing promoters keeps hispanic fighters away from slick blk boxers because they already know they out come i.e Nonito/Rig.The fans dnt care about you, if you fight for the fans your dumb, because we are all monday morning QBs at the end of the day. I guess its ok for FM to die broke like frazier right. Canelo sucks to me, they are only hyping him up bcuz of his white skin and red hair, but in no way i would try to hate on him bcuz of his business moves, he didnt want to fight ob FM card was a bus move, not for yall FANS. He seem like an ok dude but boxing wise he sucks. Remember y yall hate is the the hightest paid Athlete in the world. Yall not boxing fans yall are hispanic fans that happens to like boxing.

Toosalty… You wrote, “Canelo was tired by the 4th rd against Trout, face red etc.”

You know where you got that stupidity??? From Floydiots like the writer..

How are you tired by the 4th round when you win a 12 round fight going away, score a sizzling knockdown, and do most of the damage???

The only one red faced in this fight was Trout… He was embarrassed by his poor showing.

And Floyd was a little red faced against Cotto … At least there was a lot of red stuff flowing out of his nose holes.

Posted June 28, 2013 4:50 pm

The El Paso Fight Prophet, and Hecdodumbdog,Canelo sucks. Everytime FM fights yall pray and hope he does not win. Cmon Floyd has many fans, just that alot are into football, basketball, etc. Canelo lost to Trout everyone knows it, even him. He was tired by the 4th rd against Trout, face red etc. LISTEN ITS CALLED BOXING NOT FIGHTING that for all the dumb F!@ks that dont know the Sweet Science. This Mexican’t will lose and make money bcuz of Money. No reason to feel sorry for Money, just like he is fighting to feed his family for money alot of people come to the US and risk thier lives for MONEY!!!!!

“Canelo not only has better overall tools than Ortiz, he is also VERY poised, the single biggest flaw in Ortiz’s arsenal.” – True. I don’t know why anyone would compare the two other than they’re both Hispanic? Canelo’s handspeed is slightly better and he’s got better variety on his combinations and timing. Main thing is Ortiz goes into panic mode when heat’s in the kitchen. When has Canelo ever crumbled under pressure?

Posted June 28, 2013 4:36 pm

The Voice of Boxing

It is obvious that Saul ALvarez is the one driving the sales on this fight. First, he pulled out of Floyd’s fight to show that by being on the undercard he was actually driving Floyd’s sales up especially fighting on days that are significant to Mexicans. Secondly, because the sales for the Guerrrero fight were so small, (they are still searching for them), Floyd had to come down off his high horse and face Canelo. I know Floyd is steaming because he feels he is boxing. I have news for him, boxing survived before when its biggest stars left and it certainly did when he retired.
For the record, I thought Floyd and his followers said that Canelo was not a PPV Star? Would one of you please explain why there is so much buzz about this fight? Floyd has not been outrageous like he normally is. Apart from talking about Manny as he usually does, most of the attraction has been on Canelo. There are more fans everywhere who are screaming for him. So please tell me, why does Floyd always fight on Mexican dates, against Mexican or Latinos and also loads up on Latinos, especially Mexicans? Because he wants to say he is a huge star, that’s why!!!!!

if Canelo was likely to take Mayweather’s crown, he wouldn’t have gotten the fight …

Posted June 28, 2013 4:29 pm

This pundit says.., “Canelo is slower than Ortiz in terms of hand speed, and doesn’t have his stamina or his jab.” WTF???

Ortiz has NO jab. Canelo has a beautiful jab. Canelo is faster and has better stamina. Josesito Lopez stopped Ortiz. Alvarez completely dominated, overpowered, and stopped Lopez … after knocking him down repeatedly.

This pundit says.., “Canelo is a lot slower than Ortiz.” GTFOOH

Ortiz is slower than a pregnant tortoise. Lopez said, “If I missed any punches it’s my fault. Ortiz didn’t duck any.” Trout said, “I was shocked by Canelo’s defense and speed.” Canelo moved his head like a virtuoso against the tall, skilled, 171-pound, undefeated southpaw World Champion.

This pundit says.., “Canelo didn’t impress against Shane Mosley and Austin Trout.” LMFAO

He impressed both Mosley and Trout. The 42,000 fans who squeezed into the Astrodome were also impressed. They gave Canelo a standing Ovation.

Mayweather is the most insecure athlete I have ever seen. I do feel sorry for him because his wealth, fame and status are the only things that really have true meaning for him. Can you imagine if he loses? What will become of this materialistic, rich young man? He knows that the fans, especially the women are going crazy over the young macho Mexican. I’ve seen it, women are throwing panties at the guy, and Mayweather can’t handle it. Floyd Mayweather has never made the connection with boxing fans or sports fans because he’s loved to market himself as the rich, materialistic, power hungry man that can do all, and buy all. Canelo can’t even speak English, has never had any big major fights besides the Trout fight, which was a big deal to most fans. The draw and excitement was for Canelo. This young red head is taking the tour by storm. Just watch and see the craziness and affection everyone will give to Canelo during their ring entrance. Poor Floyd will be booed in his own home town as he always does. Floyd had very good skills, but this is the price he pays for showcasing himself on 24/7 and All Access. People had the opportunity to see what he was really like. He’s the most infamous athlete of all time. I recall a biblical scripture that say “What profits a man if he gains the whole world, but loses his soul. Another one says better a good name than riches. Instead of highlighting your kidson your hats, cars, robes, money bags, cars and every other material you have, you put more importance on money, materials, ego and fame. I feel sorry for the man. I dare to think what might become of Floyd Mayweather if he were to lose to Canelo.
