Maybe the next Mayweather… Or next Jeff Lacy

“Jumping UP 2 divisions is not a factor.” You’re being silly making a blanket comment like that Braggadamus. It may not be a factor for some boxers, but it certainly will be for others. Like Josesito Lopez. You have this fixation on this 19 or 20 pound threshold, but the reality is that it’s difficult for most boxers to just suddenly jump up two weight divisions and successfully take on a champion. Or a top contender for that matter.

Posted March 16, 2013 12:15 am

Exactly! Jumping up two divisions is not a factor. That’s why we regularly see super-middleweights beat heavyweight opponents, catch-weights between divisions is NOT commonplace, and fighters try to boil down as much as possible to get in the lowest weight class they can NOT gain an advantage on their opponents, but only to save money on their grocery bills.

Posted March 15, 2013 9:08 pm

Jumping UP 2 divisions is not a factor. Jumping up more than 3 divisions is a factor. As long as the Division is within 19 pounds of 135 Broner’s SKILLS will carry through. Ww is still the same Sport as LW. Because Boxing is a Sport NOT a Division. Broner is BETTER than Malignaggi at the Sport of Boxing. Now IF its a wresting match then jumping 2 divisions would be a significant factor because strength is needed. In Boxing, strength is not needed. Malignaggi agrees with ME on that. Boxing SKILLS is what’s needed. Or else Arnold Swarzernegger would have went from WINNING Mr. Olympia to knocking out Mike Tyson for the EASY 20 Million dollars.

Posted March 15, 2013 6:30 pm

Hissydalgo-Fire your Hissy Fits at Malignaggi. HE Is the one who is on record saying that Broner is TOO SMALL. I’m just the messenger dummy. Broner by late stoppage or DOMINANT UD.

Posted March 15, 2013 6:24 pm

“Who says …how he [Broner] looks when he does fight a World Class opponent 2 divisions higher?” So happy to see you say this, SRedmond as that was also my thought. Paulie has done some amazing things since he turned welterweight. I just don’t know why he’d risk his title against someone who most of us know will just drop back down to a lower weight class after fighting Paulie.

Posted March 15, 2013 1:54 pm

Braggadamus, you imbecile, Paulie weighed 146.2 pounds on the night he fought Cano. Broner weighed 150 lbs. on the night he fought Rees. Paulie is not “bigger” than Broner and Broner is not “smaller” than Malignaggi. However, Paulie is taller. You do know the difference between TALLER and SMALLER, don’t you?

Posted March 15, 2013 1:45 pm

You guys are seriously a bunch of followers there is NOT a single indication that Floyd and Broner are going to fight one and other besides this dude writing and article and Broner facing Malignaggi at 147…. Who says Broner even stays at the weight or how he looks when he does fight a World Class opponent 2 divisions higher?…..I find this to be a WEAK speculation and I am not sure that Haymon would endanger Broners future by putting him in this early with Floyd… This is pure speculation nothing more

Posted March 15, 2013 11:29 am

Mayweather will pick him to pieces. As good as Broner appears to be he has too many holes in his defence and is too slow of foot to be able to dominate Floyd. I see Floyd backing him up late and opening up on The Problem, but it will go the full 12 and be a close, but clear with for Money May… Every punch The {Problem throws will have already been computed by the original and he will deactivate The Problem…. Would prefer The Problem to step to either Miguel Cotto or Manny Pacquiao or face Canelo, Saul Alvarez….

Posted March 15, 2013 9:52 am

Broner’s next fight will be a show case fight that’s all. He will drop back to 140lbs and fight a GBP fighter who looks ready for the taking. If he starches Paulie then he will drop to 140lbs and fight the easiest fight between Peterson, Lucas, Danny or Khan. I’m certain that he will be ready for Lucas by end of 2014 which is the toughest hombre out there. The clowns who think Bam Bam will coz problems against Broner are delusional. Rios = Margarito in the making.

Posted March 15, 2013 6:30 am

Haterdalgo says… “he really isn’t that much “smaller” than Paulie Malignaggi.”…Well YOU need tell Malignaggi that. He is on video stating that he has stood next to Broner and Broner is TOO SMALL for him. SO follow Boxing a little closer.

Posted March 15, 2013 1:47 am

Luke also says…..”money gets KTFO at 35 by Duran, at 40 by Pryor and Arguillo, at 47 and 54 by Leonard, Hearns and Benitez.”-NO. History teaches us that SKILLS is the most important factor in Boxing. Compubox agrees with ME that Mayweather is most SKILLED at not only HITTING but also at NOT getting hit. His plus minus is the BEST ever and they even went back and tabulated Sugar Ray Robinson’s and Ali’s Fights for comparison…..SO that tells ME that Duran, Pryor, Arguello, Leonard, Hearns, and Benitez are ALL in trouble. Because Floyd is more SKILLED than they are.

Posted March 15, 2013 1:44 am

Luke says….”money may vs broner the most talent in a ring’. Ur effing crazy”-Nope. I’m SO effing ACCURATE. And in the future YOU will see what I already see right NOW and saw long AGO….. That’s why I’m Boxtradamus and you’re NOT.

Posted March 15, 2013 1:36 am

AS I said before they are all tied up with fights so at 140 there is no meaningful fight at the moment. So Broner can’t be ducking them if they all have fights coming up

Posted March 15, 2013 1:13 am

Thats simply is not a surprise. Both are cherrypickings. there are a lot of competence, danny garcia, the hard hitting argentinan, khan, canelo, maidana all with gbp so, is not promoter issue. Its all about BUSINESS AND FEARS. Broner was fighting at junior lightweight in the past years and now is a 147 lbs fighter!!! He was fighting in total advantage. In the theory he already is a star. a p4p, a worthly floyd rival. Rarely he never leads a great boxing event in las vegas.

Posted March 15, 2013 1:00 am

No one would throw a damn punch!!

Posted March 15, 2013 12:49 am

“SKILLS is more important than SIZE.” Putzadamus, Broner weighed 150 lbs. when he stepped into the ring against Rees. So, he really isn’t that much “smaller” than Paulie Malignaggi.

Posted March 15, 2013 12:48 am

Hard to say Broner is ducking the 140lb class when all the top fighters are already tied up with fights. I think 147 is just for 1 fight at the moment and then he will move back down. So it is a little early to pass judgment and saying he is dodging anybody

Posted March 15, 2013 12:38 am

Posted March 14, 2013 11:05 pm

All the top fighters at 140 are tied up in upcoming fights at the moment. And since Burns didn’t want to fight Broner and now he is about to be tied up in the courts because Warren says he still has him for 3 more fights. I am hoping he fights this fight at 147 and then moves back down. But to say he is ducking the 140 weight class is a little premature

Posted March 14, 2013 10:38 pm

Cant really say he is ducking the 140 division yet. All the top fighters at 140 are tied up in up coming fights. Burns is probably about to be out for a while with a contract dispute since Warren says he still has him for 3 more fights. Vasquez is a purboxer mover so that fight would not sell. He will probably be at 147 for one fight then move back down. To say he is ducking at this point is a inaccurate statement

Posted March 14, 2013 10:37 pm

broner is ducking the 140lb division

Posted March 14, 2013 10:12 pm

Boxtra….’money may vs broner the most talent in a ring’. Ur effing crazy…this is a week era…money gets KTFO at 35 by Duran, at 40 by Pryor and Arguillo, at 47 and 54 by Leonard, Hearns and Benitez. Everyone loves watching Broner, but lets get real for a second, HE ONLY HAS TWO SIGNIFICANT WiNS at this point. To date, his greatest accomplishment is MISS DeNESE!!

Posted March 14, 2013 10:11 pm

Broner is following Mayweather’s blueprint of making you THINK that he’s ducking but he’s NOT. IF those Fighters that you want Broner to Fight keep WINNING then you’ll see them in the Ring with Broner. They have the same Promoter. The Promoter isn’t stupid. They’re in the business of making Money. That’s why Mayweather vs. Canelo is going to happen.

Posted March 14, 2013 10:07 pm

Too bad Mikey is with Top DUCK. That’s the Fight I would want to see right now. Those are the Top two Fighters in the Sport that just graduated from Prospect to CHAMP.

Posted March 14, 2013 9:43 pm

CORRECTION….”would have ALOT of problems with Mikey Garcia…”

Posted March 14, 2013 9:42 pm

Its too soon to put Broner against Marquez. He has to face someone that can actually mount a counter attack first. Marquez is a pinpoint combination counter puncher. Broner would ALOT of problems with Mikey Garcia right. Though I’d take him as the WINNER.

Posted March 14, 2013 9:40 pm

CORRECTION….” defeated him by DOMINANT UD”…

Posted March 14, 2013 9:37 pm

Mayweather’s opponent ducked the Fight. Luckily Floyd faced the Fighter who was BETTER than the Ducker and defeated him by DOMINANT making Floyd the BEST of his era.

Posted March 14, 2013 9:36 pm

PS Boxtradamus I’d love to see Broner vs Marquez at 140. That’ll show us if the kids really got it

Posted March 14, 2013 9:34 pm

well that was a pointless article. Also when has Floyd bent to public demand to make a fight? If I recall there was some potential fight recently that would have been the biggest of all time … I can’t remember, did that end up coming off?

Posted March 14, 2013 9:32 pm

Mayweather vs. Broner would be the MOST talent to ever Fight in the Ring at the same time. Unfortunately for Broner IF he faces Floyd within the next year or so he’ll take the LOSS. But another YEAR or SO and he will be the BEST Fighter in the Sport IF it isn’t Ward or Donaire. Mayweather is on the decline but still the BEST at the moment. For almost everyone ELSE vs. Broner is TOO LATE for them. I warned everyone YEARS ago to get Broner while he was still a TADPOLE. But now he’s a Full grown SHARK. And he’s going to gobble anyone not named Mayweather or Marquez UP for a SNACK. Malignaggi is in BIG troube IF he thinks his SIZE is too much for Broner. That’s the same DUMB mistake that Margarito, Clottey, and Mosley, made vs. Pacquiao…..SKILLS is more important than SIZE.

Posted March 14, 2013 9:16 pm

Chicago guy

If Broner is dreaming to jump up to 147lbs who he want to to fight the big 3 at 147lbs are Floyd, JMM and Pacquiao. All these three are not easy fight for him. Broner will be cool at 140lbs division but not 147lbs it’s very risky proposal for him.Don’t rush yourself Broner to your downfall.

@hecdog, if the Ghost beats FMJ we may be more inclined to listen to your Broner beat FMJ theory…about as likely as the national debt getting under control.
@PEEJ, “I think” moving Broner up for this 147 title and back down is what will happen, as Broner will be groomed longer by GBP.
@Patrick2, I don’t think there is a concern of PM hurting Broner, as we know power is not something PM has.

One thing I can say for certain, I am interested in watching anytime Broner steps in the ring, although untested, he looks like it could live up to the hype at this stage. After this I would like to see him drop back down and take out Gamboa and possibly Burns, then look to 140

Posted March 14, 2013 9:05 pm

Amazing — all pretty good, thoughtful comments so far. Here’s mine. Please Broner, don’t go to 147, not yet. Stay at 135 for another fight or two, then perhaps move to 140 and try to clean out that division. But most of all, stay at the weight you’re most comfortable at, and then dominate. (Like B-Hop did.) I hate when good, talented fighters move up and then are not as effective. First case in point: Roy Jones. I cringed when he went from 168 to 175. I knew he had a middleweight frame and would not have the same power at 175. And he was never as thrilling at 175 as he was south of that weight. Same with Mosley — he should never have gone to 154. Shane was best at 147 and below. Yes, I understand as fighters age most need to move up a little, but this ‘just keep jumping up divisions to prove something’, IMO, ruins fighters prematurely. Bigger-framed guys, when they land, have devastating effects on smaller-framed guys. I think some of the blows Margarito and Cotto landed on Pacquiao probably softened Manny up more than we know. So Adrian Broner, take your time — you’ll likely get to 147 at some point, but for now don’t let anyone hurry you — you have plenty to do/prove at 135 and 140 — and I’ll love watching you do it.

Posted March 14, 2013 8:27 pm

Only thing I agree with in this article is that Broner IS being positioned for a move from HBhO to Showtime…and only MAX KELLERMAN can prevent it…by agreeing to BRUSH BRONERS HAIR in his next post fight victory interview. BRUSH baby brush! I think it might turn max on a little bit!!

Posted March 14, 2013 8:23 pm

Broner is young. Broner has limited experience. Broner has never gone 12 rounds. Broner has gone 10 rounds only once. Broner has only had 4 contests go to the scorecards. In a word, Broner is still INEXPERIENCED. We have no idea — no idea — no idea — how Broner will do in a tough fight. The idea that Broner is ready for Floyd Mayweather is beyond stupid. Anybody who thinks Broner is already a hall of fame fighter does not know anything about boxing.

Posted March 14, 2013 8:07 pm

And please stop with the Manny stuff, there is a reason Many only fights top rank fighters, there is also a reason why Manny turned down random test back in 2010 when Manny made every demand that Floyd agreed to and Manny could not agree to random testing. He should of just said no instead of making up dumb excuses on why not.

Posted March 14, 2013 8:05 pm

Can’t agree that Broner is a better all around boxer than Mayweather because we haven’t seen Broner actually box. He has stayed in the pocket and KOd some folks which is all good by me. But at the same age Floyd did more, he fought better comp at that and boxed and knocked out fighters. But I am a huge fan of Broner so not much bad to say at the moment. We will see what happes after the Malinagi fight

Posted March 14, 2013 8:04 pm

If Broner goes up to 147 and fights and beats Paulie and then drops back to 140 or 135 I would not have a problem with that. If he does stay at 147 and decides to take on the weakest comp then that will be a problem. So one fight at 147 is not an issue. Broner did try and get Burns in the ring and Burns turned it down and now it looks like he will be going to court and I doubt he will be fighting under his new promotional banner. All the top dogs at 140 have fights already so taking a fight at 147 is no big deal at the moment

Posted March 14, 2013 7:27 pm

Broner is a division ducking sob I hope Paulie can teach him a lesson.

Posted March 14, 2013 7:13 pm

Broner’s girlfriends will be nervous about Adrian hanging around Mayweather. he has a bad record with X-Girl friends.

Broner has been ducking Gamboa for years already, now he’s ducking Matthysse and everyone else at 140 to face Paulie — the lightest hitting welterweight — at 147. It’s blatant cherry picking. As for Broner vs Floyd that warrants no more than two words: Ain’t happening.

Dr. Phil Thieze-Knutz, I afraid you are correct, far more fantasy then reality regarding the match-ups for FMJ and I believe you are definitely correct in FMJ risk/reward reasoning. He is more about his resume, that 0, then Epic battles. And most his real fans are content with what he has achieved, and not to take away from it, it is would make anyone proud. However I do not see that making him a GOAT by any means, IMO. Sadly I think if FMJ through caution to the wind, he could beat anyone 160 and below, but selective choice will rule his career.

Broner vs. Paulie same as Lil Floyd vs. Gatti? Paulie is far more of a boxer than Gatti(RIP). Broner is far more aggressive than Lil Floyd. As for Broner & Lil Floyd, I have yet to see any of Haymon’s fighters face each other. IF Haymon can keep Broner undefeated in the record books(& he can). This fight will make sense in a couple years. A passing of the torch. But Lil Floyd won’t be interested in passing a torch with a loss. This article is filled with Lil Floyd fantasy match ups- Martinez? Pacman? I will believe it when I see it, which will be never. For all of the author’s deluded insight into Lil Floyd’s brain he fails to see the obvious pattern through out his career. Money isn’t even the first consideration, Risk vs. Reward.

Exiled Yank, a lot of good words in what you have posted and I agree with much of it. I do however disagree with your thoughts on DLH and his emotional desire to beat FMJ. I think DLH biggest attachment is $$. He, like Floyd, is an expert at positioning fighters and fights. Broner is his, or going to be, biggest cash Cow. Broner is taking a jump to fight PM, but I feel they have carefully calculated the risk and rewards involved, and feel Broner will comfortably beat PM without risk of KO. Needless to say, I can’t wait to see any fight Broner is in at this stage.

Dave, I think you are right, as much as most fans would like to see it, its not likely FMJ will fight all 6 in that short period of time. But I hope we are both wrong.

Chicago Guy, I agree, Broner is not good enough. However with Floyd, if he is ever going to fight Broner at all, it is likely he will do it while Broner lacks ability and has some kind of paper title or ranking. The card counting this writer mentioned, I feel is FMJ greatest ability. He is an expert at it.

As for Golden Boy, I think they are moving him up in weight too fast. Let the man grow into a division before testing him like this. FM jumped from 130 to 135 and immediately faced the best in the class and barely won (I think he lost that night). Since then he’s eased into divisions before facing the best. PM won’t hurt him at 147, but he’s a slick little Italian and may well take the win if he can use his experience to take advantage of Broner’s mistakes.

Everyone likes to make comparisons between FM and AB based on speed and and the shoulder roll technique. Honestly, they aren’t the same at all. By the time FM was ready to move up to 140 he had beaten Hernando, Corrales, Castillo, Manfredy and other top fighters, and he beat Hernandez for the 130 championship barely two years after turning pro. Hernandez only suffered two defeats in his career: one to DLH that he moved up in weight to fight, and the other was FM – so he was no slouch. It took Broner nearly twice that long to get a title, much less fight the champion of the division. I’m a fan of Broner, I think the kid has real potential, but he’s not in FM’s league when they started out and he’s no where near it now.

Posted March 14, 2013 12:47 pm

This setup is just a hype just to talk about because it is impossible to happen. Giving ccredit to Floyd Broner needs 5 year or so to reach Floyd status.

Posted March 14, 2013 12:30 pm

“So as much as Golden Boy would like to stage the mentor vs. protégé fight” Mayweather is not Broner’s mentor and Broner is not Mayweather’s protege. As for Broner jumping up two weight divisions to fight Malignaggi, I think it stinks. The 140 lbs. class contains a lot of very good if not potentially elite fighters. It’s clear to me that Broner emulates Floyd in more ways than just boxing.

Posted March 14, 2013 12:17 pm

floyd will be gone by the time broner is ready……he’ll need a few fights at welter with tougher opposition…paulie is a good fighter but basically out grew jrwwt and punches like a featherweight

Posted March 14, 2013 12:17 pm

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if that happened. Floyd will get the big payday and not have to admit defeat to anyone except the guy who wants to be him. Also, there is a growing IGNORANCE about Floyd’s contract. It states he MAY take UP TO six fights, but it doesnt garauntee he will fght six times in thirty months, only the option to do so. If you think he will fight six times in the next 30 months, you’ll be highly dissapointed.

Happyboy – You got the beat. FM called SSM and DLH out years before they fought and neither one would take him on. SSM made up stupid excuses like needing a vacation or having a toothache and DLH said it wouldn’t be right to fight FM since he (DLH) was trained by FM Sr. As for COtto, everyone knows Arum wouldn’t let Cotto fight FM. That fight only happened when it did because Cotto had left Arum.

They won’t fight.
Floyd has befriended him.
Floyd won’t fight anyone that people actually want to see (minus his Cotto fight).

Firstly, FM can fight who he wants when he wants, and he consistently fights P4P top ten guys. As for Broner, him skipping weights so fast at such a young age is dangerous. The writer may be right about DLH pushing this. It seems to me that DLH has never accepted his defeat to FM or the fact that FM refused a rematch. DLH will put anyone in there that he thinks will beat FM, even at the cost of the fighter. DLH appears to be doing business with his heart and not his brain. As for Broner PM resembling FM Gatti – I don’t see. PM is much slicker that Gatti ever dreamed of being and he won’t try to go toe-to-toe with Broner. This is a very winnable fight for Broner, but don’t think PM won’t come to upset his plans.
