What makes you think he can’t get to 154? that is his natural fight weight, nobody would fight him so he moved up … if anything, I think he’d be even better at 154.

Floyd’s problem won’t be the size, whether they fight at 150 or 154 , it’s the skill. He’s never faced a boxer with Martinez accuracy and power combination. Floyd knows this is his loss which is why he won’t take the fight.

Geale …. Danny Geale!!!!! the little unknown aussie battler who against all odds has grabbed two titles, from ze germans ya ya, in zu motherland, oth al ze placis on ze planet , but yet cant be recognized , he may take some more and soon peeps be saying “my belt um,well i had a belt but but…some kid,,,,um,, yeah now i remember, Geale he has it!! little Danny Geale”

Posted September 21, 2012 4:29 am

Yeah he’ll destroy a weight drained Martinez but not a full strength Martinez. You can forget about that!

Posted September 20, 2012 10:28 pm

Mayweather isn’t exactly the young buck he used to be either and Cotto(not Martinez quick)but was able to find him easily so i feel he is showing his age as well. I hope this fight happens but we’ll see

Mike South

This is my favourite article about this fight on this site. Short, sweet, well written and it sums it up perfectly. Good job!

Posted September 19, 2012 4:02 pm

Lol the protection of Floyd by his fans is ridiculous. Martinez said after Chavez I’ll be nipping at Floyds heels does that mean that he expects Floyd to go up to mw no he wants to make a superfight at jmw. I just want Floyd fans to admit thats simply a fight Floyd cant win even though he has 2 wins at that weight and is considering a fight with Canelo at that weight. That its not so much the size but Martinez southpaw style and insane skill level. Really Floyd fans its ok hes not suppose to be able to beat the best jmw especially when the guys good enough to rule mw.

Posted September 19, 2012 1:21 pm

Middleweight is too heavy for him.

Posted September 19, 2012 8:34 am

Oh come on there is money, just ask Floyd.

Posted September 19, 2012 8:33 am

Sergio could literally fight at welterweight. People don’t understand this.

Posted September 19, 2012 8:32 am

What’s your problem with Canelo? This kid is a dynamic fighter and a great prospect.

Posted September 19, 2012 8:28 am

After Jr hurt Martinez he had plenty of time to finish the job. He didn’t, so I believe he wouldn’t have in a 15 round fight.

Posted September 19, 2012 8:27 am

Floyd would be in for the worst night of his life against Martinez.

Posted September 19, 2012 8:24 am

I like this guy Martinez, I really like his style and his attitude . He’s a gym rat and puts in a ton of effort. The only criticism I have is something that he can;t do anything about and that’s his age. But, like Hopkins, he’ll be around for while… AGAIN, A GREAT FIGHTER .

Posted September 19, 2012 7:02 am

someone spoke of not challenging the names at in the division but he has! fact is Macklin should have been a champ as he beat Sturm in the fight previous. Barker also got no respect from the american public but both of these guys would do Canelo if he stepped up. Chaves was guided nicely but he has fought at least 2 game fighters Lee and Martinez, Canelo has fought none! fact. He got taken the distance by Mathew Hatton a welter weight. Has held a title for two years and fought no other champs. How can anyone say Martinez doesnt fight the best that will take the fight. He would destroy Geal, The fight at middle is Golovkin, Jr or Martinez should fight him. As for the baby faced red head anyone in the top five will do

Posted September 19, 2012 6:00 am

Oh dear!

Posted September 19, 2012 4:35 am

Get real,Floyd would box his head off.

Posted September 19, 2012 4:34 am

“He offered to drain down to 150 to face Floyd” that statement right there shows why its a lose lose for Mayweather… Should he beat Martinez guys will claim the weight was a factor, should he lose he will have been in the ring with a guy who reguarly contends with guys weighing 170 to 180 pounds and will be difficult to hurt given Floyds lack of body mass…. You guys HATE any manipulation in body weight and invalidate the results all the time why would you be so eager to see Sergio come down? The guy weighed more than Chavez Jr at the weigh-in…

Posted September 19, 2012 4:33 am

GGG will Kayo him if he is brave enough to fight him but I dont think so.

Posted September 19, 2012 4:30 am

How does a great fight for Martinez go from being against another MW to being against a guy who has fought ALL but 2 of his fights in the past 15 years above 147 and has NEVER hit the ring at 154 fight night in his life? The fact that a fight with Mayweather would be lucrative is a given, Floyd has done massive numbers with guys like Ortiz the reality is that FMJ has topped out in weight he has proven himself in 5 different classes and does not HAVE to fight the legitimate MW Champion….Martinez need to clear out his division and accept the legacy he achieves….

Posted September 19, 2012 4:29 am

Why? Pacquiao doesn’t fight champions and he makes millions every fight.

Posted September 19, 2012 2:40 am

is no B-level fighter. He was a champ when he stepped into that ring. Williams and Pavlik were not B level fighters either.

Posted September 19, 2012 2:35 am

Ricco, you had a logical post going until you said Martinez “couldn’t survive another round.” It was a twelve round bout. There is no other round, remember?

Posted September 19, 2012 2:31 am

against williams martinez weighed 159 at fight time. he weighed 157.5 the day before. most fighters enter the ring 5-10 pounds over the weight limit on fight night, many weigh as much as 15-20 pounds over the weight. martinez is not one of them. why would he give up his title and move to jr middleweight when the reason he moved up to begin with is he couldnt get any fights. martinez has given away considerable weight at middleweight in every fight.

Posted September 19, 2012 12:05 am

Other titlest, thats pretty much Daniel Geale.

Posted September 18, 2012 11:58 pm

That is a smart choice for Floyd. First off he is not going to be able to make 154 much less 150. And then if and when Floyd beats him then there will be an uproar about how he was weight drained. Floyd likes to fight fighters at there natural or more comfortable weight. But I do not believe that he can get to 154 because if he could he would of already and fought and collected a nice size pay check. Instead he is fighting nobodies from Europe and not getting to much for it neither

Posted September 18, 2012 11:56 pm

Peej he offered to drain to 150 for Floyd but Floyd chose Cotto. Martinez would be a superfight rite now but “Money” will chose Canelo sumone the same size as Martinez. Smart choice Floyd lol.

Posted September 18, 2012 11:26 pm

The Idiot

why you guys talk about tickets/ppv ? are you promoters or boxing fans ? with fans like that it’s normal that boxing becomes more and more illogical, thanks you all!

Posted September 18, 2012 10:44 pm

Hard to give someon credit when they have not fought any elite fighters and constantly calls out smaller fighters. If he is a 154 fighter then why won’t he fight there. They where trying to make a Kirkland fight with him and he said he had to come to 160. At the 30 day weigh for the Williams fight he was 176. He can’t make 154. If he could he would of already

Posted September 18, 2012 10:31 pm

Lol Peej Martinez said hes a natural jmw after the Maklin fight but for odvious reasons no one will fight him. U will never give Martinez the credit he deserves. Yes he is a little big for Floyd but its only bcuz of his style and skill that the fight wont happen Oscar was Martinez size. I just want that admitted to by Floyd fans.

Posted September 18, 2012 10:15 pm

In your dreams….pacman is done.

Posted September 18, 2012 9:55 pm

Martinez would knock out Mayweather, and it probably wouldn’t be very competitive. Manny and Margarito, took it out of Cotto, and Mayweather struggled with him. There’s no way mayweather would agree to fight Sergio. a rematch with Chavez has the intrigue nescessary to sell tickets/ppv. Martinez controled the fight up until the las three rds really. Let’s face it, Chavez almost finished him off. Martinez was seriously hurt, and couldn’t servive another rd. The question will be..can Martinez maintain his control of the fight, or will Chavez throw more punches earlier on, and land something telling?

Posted September 18, 2012 9:52 pm

Another 2 Cents Worth!

That’s right, Floyd won’t fight him unless he comes down to 154 or less anyway… Which he can’t… Besides, Maravilla would beat Floyd much easier than people think! And I’d bet on it, NO problem!

Posted September 18, 2012 9:48 pm

andre ward even says martinez is t00 small. do you guys follow boxing. martinez was just outweighed in this fight by 15 pounds. chavez enters the ring usually at 180, martinez 160. his natural weight is 154…which he would barely have to weight drain to make….he went to middleweight to get fights but he is outsized in every fight.

Posted September 18, 2012 9:09 pm

Posted September 18, 2012 8:50 pm

Martinez cannot make 154. So no there is no Floyd fight. Floyd is not a 154 fighter. Martinez needs to fight better comp at 160. He has defended his belt against B level fighters, not that there are many elite fighters or A level fighters at 160 but there are a couple. Yes I thought Chavez would win because I thought he was much improved. I was wrong. But to say Floyd is scared to fight Martinez when Martinez has yet to beat an elite fighter is just crazy. Martinez needs to clean out the 160lb division

Posted September 18, 2012 8:50 pm

I think Andre Ward makes alot of sense if they both can agree on a weightclass

Posted September 18, 2012 8:40 pm

Just wondering if anyone still thinks Floyd can beat Martinez or even dare to fight him lmao. Martinez is a natural jmw and agreed to come as low to 150 but he ain’t Oscar or Cotto. And dont let Floyd fans sell u Martinez cant make 154 if ur a fan of a coward naturally u will fear for him as he does for himself and make excuses for him to avoid true challenges.

Posted September 18, 2012 8:03 pm

Floyd will never fight Sergio and with Golovkin there is no money

Posted September 18, 2012 7:38 pm

The only way Sergio could be more popular is if he went to 168 and beat the big guys there but I think its to heavy for him.

Posted September 18, 2012 7:36 pm

tacoBENDER : Your right, most people do think he is boring. I was just saying what I thought will happen.

Posted September 18, 2012 7:33 pm

@ADL….You just proved my point..Martinez is BORING

Posted September 18, 2012 7:30 pm

Sergio will want the rematch because its a easy big payday. The rematch will be a snooze fest because this time Sergio will not exchange, trade or fight on the ropes. He will box and pot shot all night long to a shut out on points.

Posted September 18, 2012 7:28 pm

Here’s how it’s gonna roll (in my opinion)… Martinez will grant Jr. a rematch which would be dangerous being that Jr. is a naturally bigger man. He’ll most likely win.. Here’s the problem with Martinez…he’s boring and he can’t market himself in the American Market. He needs Jr. to catapult hm to bigger and better things..(ie-Money Mayweather, Cotto…PacMan..etc).. He needs a rematch with Jr. as but boxing needs this EVEN MORE

Posted September 18, 2012 7:26 pm

The Doctor

Ohhh, I don’t know about that. I like Cotto, but the blind angles will probably put him down much the way Pacquaio dropped him with an uppercut he didn’t see. And it will be worse cause Martinez is the bigger fighter

Posted September 18, 2012 7:06 pm

If I was Martinez, this is what I would do:
rest and rehab (health comes first)
floyd maywheater (big pay day)
Miguel Cotto (second most pay day)
Chavez Junior rematch (third best pay day)
In that order, Martinez deserves a good pay day for all his sacrifices in the ring and honestly he has dmonstrated his qualities and heart in the ring, now it’s time to get paid.

Paul Williams was overrated and Pavlik was not the same fighter after Hopkins destroyed him. Still not impressed with Martinez. He needs to fight the better fighters of his division and not the B class fighters he has been fighting. He is doing the same thing Bute did and once he gets in the ring with an elite fighter he will also be beat

Posted September 18, 2012 5:52 pm

The idiot

No way Cotto or Canelo can beat Martinez, you talk about a dude who destroyed Paul Williams in 2 and outboxed Kelly Pavlik!

1. Martinez/Golovkin
2. Martinez/Mayweather at 154

Posted September 18, 2012 5:25 pm

Martinez is the undisputed champ. But he does need to challenge the other titlest because they are the better fighters of the division. He should fight them and not pay the sanctioning fee. If he wins then it was a defense of his championship, he doesn’t need the titles he is already the. Hamp

Posted September 18, 2012 4:58 pm

martinez can make 154 easily. Butte? hahahahha….you gotta be jocking. Martinez has beaten everyone in 154 and 160. Elite or otherwise.

Posted September 18, 2012 4:46 pm

HRP has it right. Avoid Ward. Rest and heal, Maravilla. Then–Canelo, or Little Floyd. If healing is incomplete, retire.

Posted September 18, 2012 4:31 pm

Exiled Yank

Martnez has fought all over the world. I don’t think that’s an issue. He’s not like Ward…

Posted September 18, 2012 4:09 pm

It would be at a catchweight 157. Martinez is the biggest threat to floyd

Posted September 18, 2012 4:04 pm

Yup, it wasn’t a punch. It was he was pushed with his forearm!!

Posted September 18, 2012 3:58 pm

Daniel Geale has the IBF and WBA belts, wouldnt it make sense to challenge him, and become undisputed champion, and lets see if Martinez has the balls to challenge him in Australia.

Posted September 18, 2012 3:05 pm

Exiled Yank

If he can still make weight, 154 has many good options for him. But as the MW champ, I don’t know if he wants to drop to his former division. The problem is that 154 and 168 are packed with talented fighters, while 160 is pretty dry.

Posted September 18, 2012 2:38 pm

Floyd vs Martinez will never happen. Martinez can’t get to 154. Cotto or Canelo vs Martinez is a good fight. I think Martinez is like Bute. Once he steps in with the elite he will be beat

Posted September 18, 2012 2:35 pm

Great read frank. Martinez should look to mayweather next, could prove an awkward style for floyd to decode

Posted September 18, 2012 1:54 pm

Cotto vs martinez cotto by ko on late round

Posted September 18, 2012 1:42 pm

If Canelo wants to challenge Martinez he should move to 160.

Posted September 18, 2012 12:18 pm

did someone said martinez vs pac? if you think JMM was a problem, then martinez will put him in a pine box. pac wants non of that.

if sergio had a broken hand and that was so one sided the next time he will finish off chavez. NO REMATCH

Sergio Martinez vs Saul alvarez at 154 !! Do it….. Both are looking to fight top fighters plus winner would vs mayweather or cotto

Sergio Martinez vs Saul alvarez at 154 !!

As I’ve stated before and so have lots of others. Martinez won 35+ minutes of a 36 minute fights. Chavez did NOT knock Martinez down with a punch-it was a sweeping cuff that pushed him down to the canvas. Both Arum and DiBella could sell snow to the Eskimos. They’re both in the game to exploit the boxers and screw the fans. The fight wasn’t even close. Chavez fans should consider that Jr’s career could be ruined by taking another beating like that. Broken bone around the eye socket (like Margarito), a detached retina, etc. No rematch.

Posted September 18, 2012 10:35 am

“In a dramatic 12th round, Martinez had to climb off the canvas after a devastating hook from Chavez Jr sent him crashing to the canvas.” Sorry, Mr. Walsh, but Jr. did not knock Martinez down with a punch. Watch the 12th round again. You’ll see.

Posted September 18, 2012 10:27 am

Martinez is not getting any younger. He will always be in excellent shape externally. However internally the wear and tear will start to tell. This is evident in the broken left hand, the torn knee ligaments and the last minute knockdown. Martinez should :-

1. Take rest. Allow the hand and leg to heal. Do not fight for 6 months.
2. Take a fight with Canelo Alvarez. Good fight against a smaller man.
3. Take a rematch against Chavez. They are expecting him to get old. Could be a money-making might.
4. Try for a fight against Floyd, if he is around. Martinez would be almost 39 by then.
5. Retire.

Martinez should avoid fights against Ward and golovkin. Ward is a 168 fighter moving up. Martinez has maxed out at 160. golovkin is a very heavy-handed. If chavez caught up with Martinez in the 12th round, Golovkin will catch with him earlier. Very difficualt fight.

Posted September 18, 2012 8:44 am

Mayweather has hinted at going to 160 for a fight v Martinez or whoever the draw was. They should have it and then have a 165 fight night weight rule.

Martinez need chavez jr in a rematch like it or not thats the only big pay day floyd and pac will not fight him thats for sure so if he wants to make thousands he should fight the other guys yall naming but if he wants to make millions again he should do a rematch thats called boxing buisness like it or not and chavez atually got more respct now because he showed true heart by still trying to win in the 12 unlike alexander, dawson ect

Posted September 18, 2012 8:24 am

Martinez & his promoter need to call out Andre Ward, make him come down to middleweight or 162 at the most, they need to disrespect him, call him out & insult him, if Dawson can come down to 168 from 175 the Ward can come down to 160 from 168..
If he can get Ward to do this & have the fight in Las Vegas I can see Martinez having too much movement & speed for Ward

Posted September 18, 2012 8:24 am

martinez is all about money at this stage, so a rematch is pretty much certain unless alvarez, cotto, mayweather or pacquiao want him. and with the possible exception of alvarez, they don’t and are all to small.

Posted September 18, 2012 8:16 am

King Leonidas

Great point! Jr looked like he was plodding along and couldnt get anything off.

Posted September 18, 2012 8:09 am

Martinez beats Manny – just too slick and athletic. Maybe Manny around the time he fought Hatton and at 154, would have a shot but not now. He’d fall similarly to the way Williams did, he’d do that rush-in thing and Sergio would side-step him and ring up the sale !!

Posted September 18, 2012 7:25 am

Chicago guy

Matweather 1
If Jailboy vs D Ballarina fight does happen it will be the most boring fight in the history of boxing. There style is almost identical hit then backpedalling and run. Both of them don’t want to get hit so there will be no fight just running around all night long.

none of the top guns will lose their historical legacy by losing to each other, but the

No No No he was dominant he won the first 11 rnds easy…..oh thats right mayb he should have just stood there like Chavez last 46 opponents and slug it out? I think not. Its called boxing not punching. Id love 2 c Floyd and also Geale 4 every belt going, we never c that these days….

Would Love to see Floyd giving Martinez a go at 154

Posted September 18, 2012 5:34 am

You’re telling me the (154) jr middleweight who happened to be the better boxer by far should’ve traded with a guy 20-30 pounds 2-3 divisions bigger than him??………lol smh.God i tell you these jr fans.Yes there are many things Sergio does that you don’t teach (roy jones esc) Look how he turned out. That’s what makes them so dangerous & avoided they’re super athletic & very unconventional.I didn’t know that was bad thing but according to you it is.Because Sergio didn’t fight the 190lb light heavyweight or cruiser weight Sergio didn’t perform a masterpiece,ok whatever you say.Last time i checked Sergio put a 11 1/2 round clinic till jr caught him lucky while he was gassed at the end & still couldn’t finish him.It was jr who was given Sergio’s belt may i remind you not the other way around.

he was dominant but “boxing masterpiece” I think not, there is many thing Martinez does that isn’t taught in boxing, super athleticism and his unconventional style plus lack of willingness to trade shots won him the fight.

What’s next for Sergio Martinez isn’t another mismatch with Chavez… What’s next is a challenge for Floyd’s 154-pound title, or a challenge for Andre Ward’s 168-pound title… Hopefully Floyd will see the 12th round as a sign age is finally creeping up on Martinez — or Ward will agree to a catch-weight of 164.. But given his knee, Martinez probably won’t fight for another 6 months.
