Larry Merchant is terrible and so monotonous. This is the same guy who said Michael Grant and David Tua were the future of heavyweight boxing and would definitely beat Lennox Lewis once they met? Haye isn’t a coward, just look at his performances against Enzo Maccarinelli and Mormeck, The problem is, Haye isn’t really a heavyweight and he promised so much against Vladimir but failed to deliver. I think he would do much better against Vitali as he isn’t as cautious as his brother.

the reason Vitali lost both his fights was due to injuries. Torn rotator cuff against Chris Byrd. I’d like to see these indiots calling Vitali Klitschko deal with a torn rotator cuff! They’d be running whinning for their mammas. The eye injur against Lennox Lewis was quite severe. He did not quit it was stopped against his will. Again I’d like to see the idiots handle a deep cut to the bone. Vitali was actually winning both fights?

Posted September 15, 2012 7:46 pm

Your probably right! After hearing Merchants somewhat inane comments I would have to agree. He seems to speak to hear himself talk. He never seems to make realistic comments about fighting. His analogies at the end of the fight are usually trite. Oh well he has the job and I don’t so I’ll stop now.

3285 ” Lucky ” days . That’s
nine years x 365 = 3285 !

Posted September 11, 2012 10:06 am

Like Red, I fear a repeat of Haye’s awful showing against Wlad Klitschko. Still, Vitali has suffered a lot of injuries and does not seem the force he once was. His hands are brittle, his shoulders have failed him a couple of times, and he does not blow people away like he did against Hide and Kirk Johnson. If Haye was prepared to fight, he’d have a very good chance of winning. Still, off the last time, you hate to see him get rewarded with another massive payday.

Well , Vitali did use BOTH hands against Arreola and Adamek….

I am not a Hater of Haye like most people, (who maybe have good reason to) but i cant see Haye ever doing anything different in a challenging fight than going straight for safety first like against Wlad. I have no interest in Haye ever getting another shot……..

…Merchant boasts, “If I were 50 years younger I’d kick your ass.” The only thing Merchant could kick is the bucket if he stopped taking his meds… Merchant never had a fight in his life and knows less about Boxing than a chicken knows about astrophysics.

It ranks as one of Merchant’s best, but it doesn’t top, “This fight is an abortion,” or “He harpooned that whale,” and the best yet, “If I were 50 years younger I’d kick your ASS!” Merchant is freaking awesome!!!

Vitali is running away from Haye and Vladimir just had a lucky day. Haye will knock him out in a rematch.

Chagaev didn’t stand toe-to-toe with Valuev.. He boxed and moved like crazy.. The fight was a lot closer than the Haye fight,, and that was before Chagaev caught Hepatitis C.. He’s not the same fighter today obviously but contributed to half of Valuev’s losses.

…. “Cooney knocked Norton out in the first round, and Norton beat Ali… So according to some fans that makes Cooney greater than Ali.” …. Not really — since Cooney lost in his title shot vs Larry Holmes, and was much worse in his next title shot vs Michael Spinks.. Ali won a few title fights.

It happens all the time in boxing and people still don’t learn. You never know if weight loss will affect you, until it’s too late. How many times have we seen a dude who is usually in great shape, drop down in weight, then on fight night he’s gassed by the third round? How many times have we seen a dude with pretty good speed and good defence, drop down in weight and all of a sudden he’s very sluggish and a sitting duck for every punch?

Chad was sluggish, gassed, all-of-a-sudden he has terrible resistance to punches. People think that’s a coincidence?

Chico Corales
Roy Jones
James Toney
Oscar De La Hoya
Miguel Cotto
Chris Byrd

It’s happened too many times to count…. and too many times to be a mere coincidence.

the short version is….fk haye……let him beat some contenders ‘stead of skipping to the front of the line

Posted September 10, 2012 10:05 am

Ohhh!!!! When Oscar De la Hoya run is a Chicken, but if Pernell Whitaker or Floyd run they are master of boxing. Klitchko bros always acts with advantage just like any figther that have that possibility. By the way, Oscar De la Hoya is from US, he won a gold medal for US. His parents were or are mexican he does not. Dont hate because of his nationalty.

Posted September 10, 2012 9:15 am

I wouldn’t say it so convincingly. It’d be 55/45 fight with advantage going to Haye and his natural abilities (speed and power), but with the massive experience Adamek has gained by fighting decent opposition and keeping ring rust off him unlike Haye I’d say it’s a tossup fight and pretty intriguing one. While Haye has the ability for a KO any moment if Adamek stops taking too many risks in the early rounds like he tends to do to gauge his opponent I’d say he has a fair chance by wide UD maybe even stopping Haye since Haye’s only a head hunter with his wild hayemakers with no chance for UD against an active boxer and head hunter style works good for Adamek who’s a masterful tactician.

I’d much rather see Haye-Adamek. Definitely not another Klit-Haye snoozefest where the horny goliath is chasing the girly David who’s on his bicycle after 1rd shocked that along with the real HW power and massive balls the big guy has some serious speed too, his hayemakers just swing in the thin empty air while the other guy is too far away and already coming back with his own fast straight punch counters that find their mark from such a long bombing distance = run run run. Any Klit-Haye would be just another KO-avoidance dance marathon and just a heafty paycheck for Haye.

Stopping an unranked fighter is not grounds for a title shot. Beating a fighter in the top 3 may be, certainly beating a couple of fighters in the top 5 would be. Vitali won 10 of 12 rounds with a torn ligament in his shoulder…Chisora is just not top 10 material.

Posted September 10, 2012 2:42 am

haye didnt earn his first title shot..and valuev was taller, he was also slow, a light puncher, and had little defense…chagaev looked better against him than haye did…as did holyfield….

Posted September 10, 2012 2:37 am

i think haye fans may be as cowardly as he is. haye has faced 2 top 10 heavyweights in 4 years in the division. he beat one, barely, lost to the other. haye is targeting a fighter who is old, plagued with injuries and far from his prime. which is classic haye. if this was vitali of 4 years ago, he or his fans wouldnt want the fight. haye should get in the ring, beat some fighters who have a pulse, and get another shot at vladimir….and no, i dont see chisora as a big win…and i dont see winning by knock out as superior to winning a decision. if that was the case, ali wouldnt be in the top 10 of atgs, and certainly wouldnt be at the top…let me see, gerry cooney knocked out ken norton, ali went the distance with him 3 times…according to haye fans that makes cooney the greatest.

Posted September 10, 2012 2:33 am

vitali had a torn ligament in his shoulder…he fought essentially one handed against chisora. vitali is not exactly in his prime, so to lose to a 41 year old fighter using one hand—and to lose 10 out of 12 rounds…to sum it up, chisora is a bum…haye knew this, or wouldnt have taken the risk against chisora… haye has fought 2 fighters in the top 10 (according to ring) since he went to the heavyweights, one he barely beat, the other he lost to by a wide margin.

Haye, a pumped-up cruiserweight, had a bad night against Wlad no doubt, he did a fair bit of running, however no more running than all those American fighters who have ran from the K-bros and been KO’d – are they cowards as well? Me and other posters on ESB don’t need 50 year’s experience to know when someone is wrong – Merchant wasn’t displaying some profound boxing knowledge he was showing simple personal prejudice. With 50 years experience I would have thought your lover would have realized that anyone that steps into the ring is far from a coward. And by the way everyone in the States and the UK knows who ozzy is – what rock have you crawled out from under?

Posted September 10, 2012 2:02 am

Why not-stand and trade with valuev ? Chagaev did it? And we all know that valuev wasn’t a big puncher anyways!Holyfield beat him more convincing than haye did for god sakes!

Some fans are crying out for Haye to EARN a title shot by fighting Arreola or Adamek. Okay well lets ask, if not Haye, then which fighter – THAT ACTUALLY WANTS THE SHOT – should get a go at Vitali next up, and have they got a better recent result than stopping Chisora in 5? That would be the Chisora who put up a better display vs Vitali than either Arreola or Adamek did.

Posted September 9, 2012 11:09 pm

And Whites love to always cry about someone using the card, while secrectly wishing they were discriminated.

Haye v Vitali will be a good fight! I think Haye will come to fight as Vitali is there to be hit and is slow… He came good against Chisora.

of course Larry’s right. Larry’s always right as long as the fan has the same opinion as he does. Which is why he should STFU… As for Haye getting a shot at Vitaly, why not? He just stopped the guy that went the distance with VK, didn’t he? It’s not like the HW devision is over flowing with talent. But, personally I could care less, the HW devision has been in the dumps for a long time now.

Posted September 9, 2012 10:48 pm

Tomato Can – Vitali is 41 years old. His birthday is 7-19-71. Why should David Haye get a title shot? Because he lost to Vitali’s brother, Wladimir? Larry Merchant is 100% correct about Haye lacking in the cajones department.

Posted September 9, 2012 10:43 pm

David Haye is about will be about as interesting an oppenent for Vitali as he was for Wvladimer, a total sleeper just waiting to lose……Again!!

Haye, was twice as small as Valuev. What was he suppose to do, stand and trade, and give the giant the only chance he had? What the heck is wrong with some of these fans? That’s just crazy talk, and I’m not even a Haye fan. But everyone knows the guy is out gunned by both K-Bro’s. The only problem is, he would find a way to land on Vitali, and at 40 years old, that’s the last thing Vitali wants. He may as well retire anyway.

Posted September 9, 2012 10:01 pm

Well, with 50+ years in this line of work, I think Larry has a better handle on the sport than all posters on ESB thus, knows what he’s talking about. Think anyone knows who Ozzy is? Nuff said.

Way back in the day, I use to have quite a bit of respect for Merchant. I lost that respect a long time ago. Now he’s only known for the rude comments he makes to fighters. There’s nothing else of substance about him, IMO.

Posted September 9, 2012 9:57 pm

Haye didn’t do the track star thing vs Valuev. He fought a guy one foot taller and 120 pounds heavier, so he used the ring to his advantage. Haye damned near knocked the giant out in the 12th round, and in a 15 round fight he would have. De La Hoya fought a guy his same size and weight, and ran like a dog for 4 rounds …. The crowd didn’t boo Haye but they booed DLH like he was Spiro Agnew…that’s when you know a guy’s running.

Why the feck does anyone take notice of the opinion of a guy who has spent the best part of 50 years sitting outside the ring. How much b@lls does it take to do that Mr Merchant?

Posted September 9, 2012 5:37 pm

Please stop the talk about Haye. That mother *(&^%$ needs to EARN another title shot — he can go fight Adamek or Arreola. Hell, at this point I’d be more apt to let Charr get another chance — at least he TRIED to win.

Larry Merchant and Paul Strauss are idiots. David Haye is too fast for Vitali.

Posted September 9, 2012 4:45 pm

ne one who really knows boxing knows better than to believe the cut on charr was so bad the fight had to be stopped (he was landing a few lefts and taking chances too, even if he was behind, it was interesting……another atrocious call, about as bad as russell mora’s refereeing in the agbeko fight….horrible but its even more common nowadays in germany or russia than it is stateside

Posted September 9, 2012 3:54 pm

Well, in this case Haye has it coming to him — I’ve watched a lot of boxing in the last 40 or so years, and Haye’s [non-]performance against Klitschko was one of, if not the, worst I’ve witnessed in a championship fight. Especially, when you factor in all of Haye’s bravado in the years prior to the fight — just pathetic!

I was curious if McCline could “expose” Abdusalamov. In ways McCline did expose Abdusalamov both good and bad things were exposed. Mago is hittable, okay we already knew that, Mago is KO power in either hand…okay we knew that too. But what I didn’t know was that Abdusalamov could keep his composure after getting floored and just go back to business as usual. He acted like he had been put on the canvas before which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. He “knows what to do when the house is on fire” as some olde timey fighter once said. Mago appeared to be more physically fit this time into the fray. He appeared to have reduced his body fat a little bit but the significance of that is speculative. He got the win over a recognizable opponent. So Abdusalamov has victories over a few undefeated opponents and one of the old “been there, done that” war horses. Next…maybe a recent contender or former champ?

Posted September 9, 2012 12:55 pm

I have to commend Charr. He did much better than I expected and, UNLIKE HAYE, Charr tried to win. It’s unfortunate he suffered such a bad cut. Now I’d like to see Charr fight a few top-10 heavies — Adamek, Arreola, Fury etc. to see how well he could do against the lesser heavies.

I think the comment was meant to boost the credibility of Russia to stage championship fights… because they were belittling Russia for not having a lot of experience from it, so the doctor being German, and Germany having a lot of world title fights – it gives credibility to their officiating… that’s why I don’t think it was classless statement.

Posted September 9, 2012 11:50 am

Very good, accurate article. Thankfully I watched the fight with broadcasters from
Great Britain rather than HBO. Lamply’s comment about the doctor being of a specific nationality was worthless. What did it matter if the doctor was German, Russian, or from Mars? Charr had no chance against Klitchko and the doctor saved him from taking a severe beating.
