Saul Alvarez vs Ricardo Mayorga: The Risk Outweighs the Benefit

By Vitali Shaposhnikov: According to numerous rumors, Saul Alvarez might end up facing Ricardo Mayorga on September 15, 2012. At fist I thought that this had to have been some kind of a joke; an unidentified source spreading false information. Unfortunately after spending some time on the internet searching through places known to provide authentic information, it seems as though this is not only true, but is favored by name boxing fans.

Alvarez has an impressive record of beating a tremendous number of opponents, and his name has been gaining more and more popularity by the day. At some point in time, Alvarez will hit a brick wall, a record that despite looking good on paper, will present nothing of historical value to him or the sport of boxing itself.

Beating an older and clearly faded Shane Mosley, added absolutely nothing to Saul’s name. He proved that he can last twelve rounds with an over the hill, not at all hungry for a win, champion.

Now, Alvarez and his team and further risking wasting very valuable time by considering a fight with Mayorga. A useless victory and unnecessary risk is what a fight like that will deliver for team Canelo.

Of course most including myself would not expect Alvarez to lose to Mayorga, still, in the sport of boxing there are no guarantees and there is no way to prevent the possibility of a lucky shot.

One thing that Mayorga does bring to the table is the incredible marketing ability via his trash talking and obscene outbursts. This fight will sell itself, and I think that this is the only thing that made its way into Alvarez’s head.

The risk outweighs the benefit in this scenario, and unless Mayorga has agreed to fight practically for free, I don’t understand why this fight entices team Alvarez as well as numerous boxing fans excited about the possibility of this fight taking place.
