Chauncy Welliver: “I look at all my fights as high risk as it’s one guy trying to take my head off!”

by Jenna J (Exclusive Interview by Jenna J) – I recently had a chance to catch up with WBC #5 WBO#8 ranked Heavyweight Contender Chauncy Welliver (53-5-5, 20KOs) ahead of his June 28th showdown with Sherman “The Tank” Williams (34-11-1, 19KOs) that will take place over Macao, Macao S.A.R., China. Chauncy touched on a variety of topics pertaining to the fight and his future in the Heavyweight division. Here is what he had to say.

Hi Chauncy, your fight with Sherman “The Tank” Williams is only a few days away, how was your preparation for this fight?

” Preparation could not have possibly gone any smoother. Joe Hipp has my boxing sharp and Ali Crosbie has my strength & conditioning top notch. I also feel good mentally. Really looking forward to the 28th “

Most People believe that tank Williams is you’re toughest test to date. Do you believe he will be?

” I think the fight will be as easy as I made it. This fight was won in the gym & we wont know if he’s toughest as I’ll make it easy while playing his game of bombing away.”

How do you expect to go about fighting Sherman Williams? Will go for a KO?

“I plan to fight any kind of fight he chooses. I’m ready. He wants to box? Ok. He wants to brawl? I hope, because I’m ready for a good ol’ street fight type affair.”

Chauncy you have won 18 straight fights, what will a 19th against Tank Williams do for you?

“Williams is a solid test & much better than my previous 18 on this run. I think he gets me the big fights, though he’s not a big name, but he is respected in boxing circles”

Some people have said that this is a high risk, low reward fight, how damaging for your career would it be to take a loss in this fight?

“A loss to anybody pushes me toward retirement, but I’m confident going into this bout we’ll be moving ahead.
As far as high risk/low reward, I look at all my fights as high risk as it’s one guy trying to take my head off.”

You are currently ranked #5 in the WBC and #8 in the WBO. What this journey been like for you and is it your goal to climb into a mandatory spot for a title shot?

“My goal is & always has been to get a title shot. I’d like to fight the fellow top guys in order to earn a shot. Seth Mitchell & Jonathan Banks are a duo I’d like to fight & move up the ranks hopefully to a fight with friend & WBA champ, Sasha Povetkin.”

Do you feel that you are the best American contender and what are your thoughts on some of the others Americans that people claim are better?

“I feel I’m one of, if not the best American heavies around, yes. I’d fight the guys everybody else says is the best. Arreola, Mitchell, any of them. People don’t see my fights as my fights are outside the States. Once they see the “new Chauncy”, they’ll see one of the better American heavyweights.”

Vitali Klitschko may retire after his next fight, is that good or bad for the Heavyweight division?

“I think it’s good, and bad. Bad as we lose one of the few money generating guys in the division. Good because no matter who wins the vacant WBC, we’ll probably see the division unified for the first time in years.”

What is your official prediction on the fight and how your fans and the boxing fans in the USA can view you fight with Tank Williams

“I see this as a brawl with neither of us taking a step back. My cardio will kick in hopefully as he’s dying out. I can throw many punches, so I see this possibly being a stoppage, but realistically, a wide decision win.
As for bout being seen, I know there is English speaking commentators, so maybe sort of internet or tv??”

Any message you want to pass along to your fans and the readers of East Side Boxing?

“Thanks for the great support from many of you. Also, thanks for the jeers from a select few. The good & bad push me only to fight harder & prove the fans right, & the haters wrongs. Keep following my journey to the world championship!”
