By Lewis Croft: After his controversial point’s loss to Philippine rival Manny Pacquiao last November, many felt yet again Juan Manuel Marquez failed to get a fair judgement on the score cards. Despite three previous fights, yet again Marquez feels justice has not been done and there is still unfinished business between the pair. As a result of the controversial nature of the bout a cry for a 4th instalment looked set.
In the aftermath, Marquez stated that if he failed to secure a rematch with Pacquiao he would hang his gloves up and enter retirement after a very successful career. A rematch failed to materialize despite great interest from the public and Manny Pacquaio signed to face undefeated WBO Light-welterweight champion Timothy Bradley in his first welterweight contest.
Despite his previous statements, Juan Manuel Marquez is not ready to hang his gloves up just yet. The Mexican vacated his World Boxing Organization (WBO) Lightweight title to seemingly focus on his campaign at 140 Lbs and luring Manny Pacquiao into one last fight.
Interestingly, the opponent of choice comes to the table offering a perfect record of 42-0. The relatively unknown Argentine, Cesar Rene Cuenca will travel outside his native land for the first time in attempt to make a name for himself on American PPV. No doubt the confidence of an undefeated fighter is a wonderful thing but despite his perfect record he only has one knockout to his name, way back on 2005.
Cuenca is stepping up a huge gulf in class here facing Marquez particularly in Mexico on the 21st April. Its clearly a keep busy bout for Marquez who will be keeping a close eye on the winner of Pacquiao/Bradley and Khan/Peterson. There are many good quality fights still out there for Marquez in the booming Light welterweight division, but it’s clear to see there is still unfinished business between the Mexican and Philippine superstar.
