LOS ANGELES, October 19 – Two prestigious World Boxing Council (WBC) title belts will be on the line at the Gimnacio Luis Estrada Medina in Guasave, Mexico on Saturday, October 22 when Guasave’s Mario Rodriguez meets Colombia’s Karl Diaz for the WBC Youth Light Flyweight championship and Mazatlan’s Pedro Guevara takes on Jorge Estrada for the vacant WBC Silver Light Flyweight title in the featured “Sabados De Corona” fights which will be televised by Televisa in Mexico and on AT&T U-verse in the United States.
Rodriguez vs. Diaz and Guevara vs. Estrada, both scheduled for 12 rounds, are presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Box Latino and sponsored by Corona. The Televisa broadcast will air on Canal 5 and begins at 10:30pm CT/9:30 PM MT. Doors open at 5:00pm and the first fight is at 5:45pm.

Guasave’s Mario “Dragoncito” Rodriguez (11-6-4, 7 KO’s) always comes to fight and that attitude has made him a fan favorite in his home country. A hard-hitting competitor with an exciting style, Rodriguez challenged Donnie Nietes for the WBO title last August, falling short of victory via decision. Following that bout, he fought to a draw with Pedro Guevara in May, but two months later, he won the vacant NABF minimum weight crown with a 12-round victory over previously unbeaten Manuel Jimenez.
A native of Sahagun, Colombia, 24-year old Karl Diaz (16-2, 12 KO’s) is a hot prospect with knockout power who is no stranger to title fights having competed for the WBA Fedebol, WBC Youth Intercontinental and WBC Silver Light Flyweight titles over the course of his three-year career. On October 22, he looks to extend his five-fight winning streak against local favorite Rodriguez.
Mazatlan’s Pedro “Jibran” Guevara (12-0-1, 8 KO’s) has done his city and his country proud thus far in his three year professional career, roaring out to an unbeaten record while showing off the skills that many believe will have him wearing championship gold in the near future. Coming off of a 7-0 year in 2010, Guevara has scored knockouts in his last five victories, and on October 22, the WBC Silver Light Flyweight champion hopes to rebound from a 12 round draw with the tough Mario Rodriguez to add to that streak.
Hailing from San Pelayo, Colombia, 22-year-old Jorge Estrada (13-5, 4 KO’s) is no stranger to championship action, having already fought for the WBC Youth Intercontinental, WBA Fedecentro and WBA Fedebol titles over the course of his nearly three-year professional career. While he has fallen short of winning a title in the past, with wins in two of his last three bouts, Estrada expects to turn things around by defeating Pedro Guevara.
Former Amateur Star Alex Theran Joins Team Colombia
TOTOWA, NJ/ORANGE, CA (October XX, 2011) — The signing of former world amateur star, power-punching Alex “The Prince” Theran, has bolstered an already strong Team Colombia, which is co-promoted by Gary Shaw Productions and Thompson Boxing Promotions.
Theran joins world-rated boxers Darley Perez, Daulis Prescott and Yonnhy Perez, as well as 2008 Colombia Olympian Jhonatan “Momo” Romero, on Team Colombia.
“We’re building a powerhouse with some of the leading fighters in the world on Team Colombia” Shaw said, “Not only was Theran one of top Colombian amateurs of all-time, he was one of the best in the world, and we’re very excited to add him in our growing stable of contenders and promising prospects.”
The 20-year-old Theran may have learned how to box at the dinner table as one of 15 siblings. The powerful southpaw had 180 amateur fights, highlighted by four National championships, two as a junior (under 18). Theran captured top honors at an International tournament in Cuba, as well as a tournament in the Dominican Republic. He was also a Silver Medalist in the South American Games.
Theran’s much-anticipated pro debut was this past July 27 in his hometown of Barranguilla, in which he knocked out Leo Cassiani only 34-seconds into the opening round. Sixteen days later, “The Prince” needed 1:18 to stop Gabriel Bracho. The accelerated pace of his young pro career continued September 30 as the fearless Theran won a unanimous six-round decision versus 34-fight, battled tested veteran Oney Valdez (22-11-1), a former WBO Latino and WBA Fedecentro champion, who was knocked out of the ring by Alex at one point.

NEW RIVAL FOR IVAN CALDERON; INJURED CARLOS “INDIO” QUINTANA WILL NOT FIGHT NEXT OCTOBER 29 IN GUAYNABO, PUERTO RICO AS PART OF THE 24TH WBO ANNUAL CONVENTION
Former two time world champion Ivan “Iron Boy” Calderon will face a new foe next October 29 at the Coliseo Mario “Quijote” Morales in Guaynabo, after a hand injury suffered by previous opponent Raul “Rayito” Garcia, for their fight in the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Tournament card presented by PR Best Boxing Promotions (PRBBP) as part of the 24th WBO Annual Convention.
Now, Calderón (34-2-1, 6 KOs) will face Mexican Felipe Rivas (11-8-1, 5 KOs) for the 105lb WBO Latino title.
While, Carlos “El Indio” Quintana (28-3, 22 KOs), former WBO welterweight champion and seventh ranked by the WBO, will not fight in the show because an injury in his nose after a sparring session. Quintana was supposed to face hard puncher Jorge “Destroyer” Meléndez (20-2-1, 20 KOs) for the WBO Latino junior middleweight title. A rival for Melendez will be announced soon.
In the coestelar fight, former WBO superbantamweight champion Wilfredo Vázquez Jr. (20-1-1, 17 KOs), will fight for the WBO 122lb Intercontinental title against a foe to be named, and Argentinian Yessica Yolanda Bopp (16-0, 7 KOs) will defend her WBO junior flyweight belt against Suzane Warner (9-10-1, 2 KOs) in a 10 round bout.
In another title bout, Javier Monserrate (24-1-1, 17 KOs) and Javier Castro (25-4, 20 KOs) will fight for the WBO Latino junior welter belt.
In four rounds bouts, Israel “El Heredero” Vázquez (3-0-2, 3 KOs) versus debutant Jesús Pagán in the flyweight division; Kenny Rivera (1-0, 1 KO) will face Leduan Barthelemy (2-0, 2 KOs) in the featherwight division, and debutants Anaury Rijo and Pablo de Jesus will fight in the junior middleweights.
The 24th WBO Annual Convention is from October 24 to October 29 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Isla Verde, Carolina, Puerto Rico.
