By James Slater: Though millions of fans throughout the globe will be excitedly watching Pound-for-Pound king Manny Pacquiao fight Sugar Shane Mosley on Saturday night, former P-4-P champ Floyd Mayweather Junior won’t be joining them.
There was talk of “Money” attending the big fight in Las Vegas, primarily to see for himself whether or not Pac-Man could do what he himself was unable to do: namely knock Mosley out. Floyd was thought to be interested in “scouting” the Filipino superstar we all wish he would fight in the ring. However, according to an interview the 34-year-old unbeaten star gave with fight hype.com (as picked up by ESPN.co.uk), Mayweather is not interested in Saturday’s clash. At all. So much so, that he says he will be going to a Lady Gaga concert instead!
“All he’s doing is fighting my leftovers,” Mayweather Junior said of Pac-Man. “He just keeps saying I’m scared. All I say is this: why are you sacred to take the tests? You know what I’m going to be doing on Saturday night? I’m going to be watching Lady Gaga.”
It seems, then, as though Mayweather will never relent on his demand that Pacquiao adhere to the pre-fight OSDT requirements he has made. Insisting he needs a “level playing field” for the fight to happen, Mayweather has made no secret of that fact that he is suspicious when it comes to whether or not Pac-Man has taken and is taking, illegal, performance-enhancing substances. Of course, there is no proof of this and Pacquiao has been hurt badly by such talk – to the point where he has threatened Mayweather with legal action. Pac-Man has also made no secret of the fact that he is unwilling to jump through hoops and do whatever Mayweather says he should do.
It seems the careers Pacquiao and Mayweather are destined to continue going their separate ways. Who are the biggest losers if this is indeed the case? The fans. Mayweather did hint that there may be a tine when he decides to step back into the ring, however.
“As of right now, I’m enjoying life and spending quality time with my children,” he said. “Whenever Floyd Mayweather wants to get back into the ring, he’s going to get back into the ring.”
But is time – and age – beginning to catch up with Mayweather and his once-sublime skills? Time waits for no man; not even if his name is “Money.”
