Frank Warren has underlined his commitment to Scottish boxing by snapping up top amateur star Stephen Simmons.
The 25-year-old from Edinburgh will make his big debut on the undercard of Ricky Burns’ next World Boxing Organization (WBO) World Super-Featherweight title defence.
Hotshot Simmons won a bronze medal at last year’s Commonwealth Games, and also made it to the quarter finals of the World Championships.
Trained by Billy Nelson alongside Burns, Simmons will drop down from his amateur division of heavyweight to compete as a cruiserweight as a professional.
Simmons will join Scottish stars such as Burns, Jon Thain, John Simpson, Alex Arthur, Paul Appleby and Michael Roberts under the promotional banner of Warren.
“Scottish boxing is on a real high right now, and I couldn’t think of a better time to turn professional,” said Simmons.
“I’ve been watching the progress of Ricky and the rest of the lads over the last couple of years, and it’s been a real inspiration.
“I think both Scottish and British boxing have got some fantastic young prospects right now, and to be a part of such a buzzing scene is a dream come true.”
As an amateur, Simmons had more 100 fights, losing only a handful, and as well as medalling at the Commonwealth Games, picked up numerous Scottish, Four Nations and International trophies.
Trainer Billy Nelson added: “Watching Simmons in the gym is so exciting.
“He transfers what he does behind closed doors to professional fights then he really is going to have a glittering career.
“I think we only saw a fraction of Stevie’s talent as an amateur. He can definitely go all the way as a pro.”
And promoter Warren said: “Scotland has always been a key market for me because there are so many good fighters up there.
“In recent years I’ve been lucky enough to promote Scott Harrison, Alex Arthur and Ricky Burns, and I’ve no doubt that if Stephen lives the life he can go on to achieve big things.”
