By Matthew Paras – In the main event of Friday Night Fights, lightweight Bredis Prescott (23-2, 19 KOs) won a unanimous decision over journeyman Harrison Cuello (19-13-3, 14 KOs). Prescott continued his comeback trail to two wins after suffering back to back losses respectively.
The first couple of rounds started out with Prescott’s aggression being the key to his success. Prescott came forward with throwing jabs and right hands that Cuello had no answer for. The fight became more interesting in the middle rounds when Harrison Cuello figured he could withstand Prescott’s power..
Cuello in the fourth and fifth rounds started taking more chances. The southpaw Cuello connected with lead left hands and jabs that seemed to be a momentum changer. However, all momentum that Cuello gained was lost when Prescott increased his work rate.
Prescott continued dominating and scored a knockdown in the ninth round with a straight right hand down the pipe. Cuello tried to rally back in the tenth, but he simply did not have the power to hurt Prescott.
Scores were 98-91 and 99-90 twice for Prescott.
Mollo-Gomez battle to Majority Draw!
By Matthew Paras
Fan favorite Mike Mollo and Journeyman Gary Gomez battled to a close contested majority draw at the UIC Pavilion Friday night for Dominic Pesoli’s “Windy City Fight Night 11.” The fight was fought in close quarters, while being competitive throughout.
The first rounds Mike Mollo seemed to be backing Gomez up. Mollo fought well on the inside by targeting the body and providing a variety of shots that connected often. However, Gomez showed that he was not just in it for the paycheck.
While Gomez was taking shots, he was also firing back trying to work his way into the fight. Gomez was scrappy. In the fifth round, Mollo’s nose started to bleed. Mollo appeared to be losing steam, but the Chicago crowd of around 1200 cheered him on.
The next few rounds were closer. Mollo was the more active fighter, but Gomez was landing the harder shots. With two rounds to go, Gomez went for broke. He outworked Mollo, who showed guts and determination by sticking in there.
The final bell rang with the crowd standing on its feet. Scores were announced 77-75 for Mollo and 76-76 twice.
