Q&A with Steve Forbes

By Marlynda Millerick – On March 6, 2010 Steve “Two Pound” Forbes will be taking part in the Juan Urango/Devon Alexander show when he faces Harrison Cuello in a Jr. Welterweight bout at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT. I recently caught up with Forbes, who generously made the time for this quick Q&A to discuss his upcoming fight.

MM: Steve, I know you’re busy with preparations for your upcoming fight, so let me start by thanking you for taking the time to participate in this interview. So tell me, how is your training going? How are you feeling right now?

SF: Training is going good right now. I’m here at the wild card gym doing some sparring with Manny Pacquaio, and getting familiar with Freddy Roach..

MM: What is your main focus in preparing for this fight, can you talk a little about your strategy? Also, would you care to put your prediction out there?

SF: Well, I know he’s a lefty so me boxing Manny in the gym is great prep for any lefty. My prediction is I will win.

MM: Let’s discuss weight class and your recent decision to make a return to Jr. Welterweight. You are always in great shape when you enter the ring regardless of weight, are you more comfortable fighting at 140? And by the way, I do think it’s a great division for you.

SF: Well thank you. I do think its my best weight and I’m not at a disadvantage at that weight unlike the Contender, although I enjoyed that.

MM: What do you think about your upcoming opponent, have you seen much of him?

SF: I’ve seen some of his fights, one against Mike Arnaoutis and I thought he was a lot better than his record indicates, he should be tough.

MM: Going over some of the talent in this division, who would you like to face next? And what would be your “dream fight”?

SF: I would face any of the name guys at 140lbs. I don’t shy away from challenges and would like to face any of them. Dream fight would be a unification fight with any of them for all the belts.

MM: In looking at your resume and some of the names you have faced, I have to ask.. which has been your toughest fight thus far?

SF: I would have to say De La Hoya was the toughest, simply because he was bigger and stronger plus I had never been that banged up after a fight but so was he, I had never seen him look that way.

MM: What would you say has been the brightest moment of your career? Or have you yet to experience that moment.

SF: The biggest moment was facing Oscar in front of 27,000 people and all the celebs.

MM: Most fans know your story, but for those who are unfamiliar, can you talk a little bit about what made you get into boxing. And who, if anyone, has been your biggest inspiration in the sport?

SF: Well I was born weighing only 2lbs at birth so I was a born fighter. But my grandma and I were at a store and I saw Evander Holyfield in the Ring Magazine, and she bought it for me and I started boxing the next week. I was already involved and loved martial arts pryor to starting boxing. My biggest inspiration is my 3 kids, I just wanna do my best so they can say my dad was a great competitor.

MM: Other than boxing and spending time with your beautiful family, what are some of your other passions?

SF: I want to get into films, behind the scenes. Directing, producing etc..

MM: Lastly, is there anything you would like to say to your fans?

SF: Well I wanna say to my fans.. I apreciate them and I hope they enjoy me performing, because I enjoy giving them my best.

MM: Steve, thank you again for your time. You always put yourself out there for the fans, and we all love you for it. I appreciate the interview and wish you the best of luck on March 6th, and in your career.

SF: No problem, I thank you.
